Without God

in Faith

Mona Charen has a great column about the degradation of American culture.

And what of Al Sharpton? The scandal there is that there is no scandal. Here is a man who rose to fame on the strength of a racially motivated smear of a group of perfectly innocent police officers. The good Reverend has never acknowledged wrongdoing nor apologized. As if that were not enough, he was the provocateur who incited a race riot in Harlem that led to the torching of a clothing store and the deaths of seven people. Again, no apology.

The real problem is that we’ve removed reverence for the Almighty from our lives. I blame Christians for abdicating and acquiescing in the face of secularist onslaughts. More on that later.

America, with all its smutty, lustful, murderous (abortion) and decadent ways, is still the greatest country in the world for one reason: It was founded on biblical principles.

Liberals, libertarians, etc., believe that faith in God belongs in the private sphere. But our nation was founded on Christian ideals of justice, fairness and freedom.

As Chuck Colson says in How Now Shall We Live?, Christians must once again engage the culture and stand firm against the secularist worldview. There was a time, for instance, when art reflected objective truths, such as beauty and holiness. But now that truths are relative, any piece of trash anybody wants to throw out there is considered art.

All other world systems fail the masses but benefit the elite. In America a dirt poor man, born and bred in ignorance and poverty, can rise to economic success with hard work, perseverance and discipline. An African coworker of mine is astounded to see healthy homeless men (bums) on the street asking him for money when he had to struggle to come to the U.S. on a student visa. He’s now a success and works hard to provide for a family, but he hasn’t seen his relatives in Africa for over five years.

“American blacks don’t understand the hardships you had to face to come to the U.S.,” I told him. “Most blacks — liberals — believe they’re owed something, even though they’re living in the richest country in the world!”

Such words are subversive in the black community. I know firsthand. Just the other day I was speaking to another coworker about being a conservative. She expressed disbelief and rolled off a litany of untruths about how the Republicans opposed Civil Rights legislation (see entry for November 22, 2003).

I’ve gone off on a tangent again.

I can’t wait to finish Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson’s new book, Scam: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America (see What I’m Reading in the sidebar). I plan to write a two-part review because it’s such an important book. Now he’s subversive! Problems in the black community are caused by the irresponsibility and immorality of black people themselves. Take that!
