Hi Robin,

You make good points about the status of marriage. Heterosexual marriage certainly is not without criticism. But here's the point I believe LaShawn was making and you didn't consider. We are a nation built on ideals. There are countless ideals and values we have not always lived up to. <strong>"All men are created equal"</strong>

We did not treat all people equally..but it was an ideal that our nation strived for.Societies must have goals and ideals that define who they want to be..not who they are..but a lofty and honorable destination. America has often fallen short of it's ideals..but it has been careful not to alter or lower them. It is not hypocritical for a culture to want to protect these ideals..even when their actions do not measure up. America holds up the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman as a fundamental ideal. To justify changing this ideal because this union is imperfect is a dangerous and foolish compromise.

It is at the core of our society. It is how we reproduce. It is how create familys. It is not just a tradition. It is a probably the single most important ideal and value we reach for. To tamper or attempt to adjust it because it is imperfect is asking for the slow decay of a civilization. I am a Christian..but I am new and my understanding of God is at least shaky. So my views on homosexuality are not yet spiritual based. They are based on what I know of history and other ancient societies. There must be moral code concerning marriage and family. It is too dangerous to bend this code. I would appreciate your reply. I would like to understand your beliefs. Please take care. Rainmaker..

"In the midst of this chaos, homosexuals are now attempting to destroy the foundation of the family by rendering the concept of marriage meaningless."

I agree with most of what you say here, La Shawn, but I have to protest this point. Homosexual marriage <em>isn't</em> going to destroy marriage, because we heterosexuals have already done that. From our ready acceptance of extramarital (including premarital) sex to the ease at which married couples get divorces (see: Britney Spears), marriage as an institution is already pretty near meaningless. This is nothing but the final straw on the back of a camel already weighed down by a ton of straws.
