David Limbaugh is frustrated. I’m feeling it, too. In his latest column, “The One-Sided Culture War”, he writes:
If our society finally surrenders to the relentless onslaught against the absolute moral standards that serve as the foundation for our library of freedoms, it will only be a matter of time before America falls.I don’t mean to be a prophet of doom. We don’t have to throw in the towel. But unless a healthy percentage of traditionalists wakes up and starts fighting back, our grandchildren will not inherit the blessings of liberty or the luxury of a society built on the rock solid foundation of Judeo-Christian values.
Limbaugh gives several examples of societal changes that reached fruition before our very eyes:
— the audacity of the Massachusetts high court rewriting its constitution to redefine marriage and its cavalier treatment of the legislative branch;
—the lawlessness of public officials legitimizing homosexual marriage;
—the brazenness, and frankly, depravity of the recent “National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers”;
—the Supreme Court’s disallowance of theology scholarships;
—the California Supreme Court’s decision that the employee healthcare plans of Catholic charities must provide access to contraception;
— the lawsuit seeking to expel the Boy Scouts from public parklands in San Diego because of their adherence to traditional values;
—that President Bush and others resisting a fundamental revision of the thousands-year-old institution of marriage are accused of political opportunism, initiating a culture conflict, and hatefulness;
—that Jane Fonda is being honored as one of the “100 Women of the Century”;
—That Senator Kerry actually boasted that America-unfriendly foreign leaders prefer him as president.
Limbaugh, a Christian, is reaching out to others to do something about our collapsing culture. He intimates that the “naivete and complacency” of the so-called Christian majority is one of the reasons those on the left side of the culture war appear to be winning. I say appear for a reason.
Evil does seem to prosper. The prophet Jeremiah asked God, “Righteous are You, O Lord, when I plead with You; yet let me talk with You about Your judgments. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are those happy who deal so treacherously?” Jeremiah 12:1
The psalmist asked, “Lord, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked triumph?” Psalm 94:3
Christians ask themselves these questions every day, but we look to Scripture for the answers. King David says:
Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.
He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret — it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Psalm 37:1-11
Who can dispute the word of God? Read the rest of Psalm 37.
Christians are called to evangelize the lost. But how much should we be involved in public policy? Does disengagement mean surrender “to the relentless onslaught against the absolute moral standards that serve as the foundation for our library of freedoms?”
