Why Do You Blog/Read Blogs?

Unexpected tears flowed as I watched a tiny, frail-looking Nancy Reagan stroking her husband’s flag-draped coffin. Oh, the pain of the human condition! No matter what ideology we hold, we all face the same fate: death. But believers rejoice in knowing our eternal life will be spent in the presence of God. From what I’ve heard and read this past week, Reagan was a believer. He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior. Praise God.

D.C. is closed today and I’m in one of my favorite places: at home in front of my computer with a cup of coffee, watching the rain fall. I’d like to conduct an informal survey of bloggers and non-bloggers. First, to bloggers I ask:

1) Why do you blog?

I created this weblog in early November 2003. Dealing with HTML code almost drove me crazy. A few days and several Advil tablets later, I had something I was satisfied with.

My first entry on November 5 was a column about the Congressional Black Caucus’s opposition to California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown (while doing research for the piece, I fell for a fake “Willie Lynch” letter about slaves, a shameful moment that will remain displayed for all to see).

The permalink to the post doesn’t work for whatever reason, so you’ll have to scroll to the end of this page. I was excited that it produced four reader comments. The comment count doesn’t show up, but comments are there.

I began blogging to fill the void between bi-weekly columns. Events were happening faster than I could write about them in a column, so I decided to cover the big issues in the column and smaller, more specific ones on the blog. As you may know, I have strong opinions and something to say about everything.

I also like posting my column on the blog before I send it out to see how it will look, to catch typos and get reader feedback. Speaking of feedback, this is also why I blog. I enjoy instant opinions from readers.

Additionally, I wanted to blog to write daily about politics from a Christian worldview. I delight in God’s word and expressing it (though I should do it more often) and myself through the written word and don’t consider it “work.” Writing is still mostly a hobby because I rarely get paid for it. Hopefully I can build a writing career that will pay the rent.

For bloggers and non-bloggers in the audience:

2) Why do you read web blogs?

(Spread the word about this survey to others. I plan to post some of your comments.)
