I have a three-month-old blog (<a href="http://christnu.org">DOUBLE TOOTHPICKS</a>) on politics/culture from a Christian worldview, and I have been trying different things to get readership up. I did do some of the things you suggested. I also suggest getting listed on Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem and Technorati. And, blogads on some high traffic sites are still very inexpensive (Donald Sensing's One Hand Clapping is only $25/week). Don't expect more than about 0.2% of all visitors to the "host" site to click through, though. Not a lot of people click ads.
