Welcome To My New Place!

by La Shawn on July 22, 2004

in General

Hello! Pardon the mess. As you can see, I have lots of work to do. I was going to make my debut on Monday, but asked myself, “Why?”

I’m moving in and feeling my way around WordPress. I have to complete my blogroll and sidebar, upload a photo and play around with CSS.

Want to know why I didn’t import the comments? Because I can’t! Until I figure out how or someone else does, it looks like they won’t be imported. With all this new technology and blogging software, I can’t believe someone hasn’t figured out how to import comments! I’m willing to pay someone to export them from HaloScan for me. Yeah, I got money to burn.

For now, I’ll leave the old blog up for two more weeks or so (at which time I’ll set up a redirect from the Blog*Spot URL), in case anyone wants to print some of those great comments. I’ll retain my HaloScan account, so the comments will still exist.

Fill up these empty comment boxes please! And update your blogrolls. Substantive posting will resume shortly. I have a word or two to say about the pilfering Samuel “Sandy” Berger.

Thanks for stopping by!

mhking 07.22.04 at 1:15 pm

Place looks good, LaShawn!

Congratulations with finally moving off of blogsplat!

Jared 07.22.04 at 1:27 pm

La Shawn,

Congrats on the relocation. Updating my blogroll even as I type. Gorgeous site!

Guy 07.22.04 at 1:28 pm

Yeeha! We’ll have to have a house warming party. As a song from a 60s musical said: “Bless this house, o’ Lord we pray. Make it save by night and day.”

Grouchy Old Yorkie Lady 07.22.04 at 1:28 pm

Congratulations on the new place! It looks good! Links updated as we speak.

Ambra Nykol 07.22.04 at 1:30 pm

Needless to say, I’m Godly jealous ;-)

Lola 07.22.04 at 1:36 pm

Yayy!!! Updating my bookmark folders . . .

Deb 07.22.04 at 1:39 pm

LaShawn, very nice! :)

molotov 07.22.04 at 1:42 pm

Congrats! When we grow up, we plan to make a similar move. WAY too many glitches on Blogspot, and free can only be tolerated so much.

King of Fools 07.22.04 at 1:44 pm

Nice digs. I have imported Haloscan comments once – but it was for MT 2.66. I found a plug-in to do it but it did not work. I ended up hacking several MT files to get it to work.

It is possible, though.

King of Fools 07.22.04 at 1:45 pm

Nevermind…just realized you were on WordPress. I suppose you could reconvert your blogspot to MT, import the comments and then import MT into WP.

Mad Mikey 07.22.04 at 1:57 pm

La Shawn,

Congratulations on moving from Blog*Spot!!

Now – enjoy the freedom of having a site that doesn’t have compulsory advertising and iffy reliability!

Ben 07.22.04 at 2:00 pm

La Shawn, The only problem with your other site was you lost a link to me when the blogdom of God roll quit working. :)
Blessings on your new home. May God continue to pour his heart out through you and touch you with his love.

Looks great! Change is good.

Athena 07.22.04 at 2:47 pm

I love the new design! The URL will make your traffic increase that much more.

Even though I’m a small blog, my traffic took a little bit of a jump when I switched my address over, I can only imagine what it will do for you!

cooper 07.22.04 at 2:47 pm

Cool new digs! I love the layout and the colors!

Look forward to your continuing wonderful view of the world!

Michael Gallaugher 07.22.04 at 3:17 pm

Nice – not just more attractive, but easier to read.

Hal 07.22.04 at 3:25 pm

Love the new look. I’ve updated my blogroll too. Looking forward to your future posts in your new digs.

delftsman3 07.22.04 at 3:40 pm

Congratulations on the move!
Appropiate change made to the bloggroll.

Rikki 07.22.04 at 3:55 pm

I am SO glad you got your own spot! Now I can read at work! It’s looking good so far. *smile*

Mark J 07.22.04 at 3:58 pm

If you send me an export file of your HaloScan comment, I can at least take a look at it and try to figure it out for you. I have a little bit of experience with WP import scripts, as I had to create a custom one to import my funky MT install.

Douglas 07.22.04 at 4:04 pm

Love the new place! You should have commented on my previous post, which speaks of my changing lodgings and moving to Movable Type. Then it wouldn’t have been off topic :)

There is a question in my mind though. How much is this costing you? Are you planning to sell ads (Blogads, etc.) to recoup the costs? Is this progress? I’m not complaining to the slightest, I wish you the best of success, but inquiring minds want to know!

Rae 07.22.04 at 4:49 pm

La Shawn-just beautiful! I love the earth tone colors- so warm and inviting.

Mike 07.22.04 at 5:01 pm

Everything looks great. I put out a post directing anyone who might help with old comments to come your way!

Lee 07.22.04 at 5:13 pm

Great new site, La Shawn! Like the new look.

Adrian Warnock 07.22.04 at 5:37 pm

Hurrah!
I wish I could ditch blogger altogether!

Andy 07.22.04 at 5:43 pm

Very nice!! It even complements my Firefox browser’s “Woodie” chrome. :)

May I make three suggestions?
1) Enable resize. I like my windows to be fullsized, so as to minimize scrolling–I’m getting old and my youthful injuries are catching up to me.

2) In addition to the post button, how about a preview option?

2) Perhaps under your “Recent Posts” or “Your Comments”, you might consider adding links, like Michael Williams at Master of None to the following:
–Most Recent Comments
–Most Commented-On Posts
–Recently Active Threads

Other than that, Keep on Writin’

Jim Robertson 07.22.04 at 5:55 pm

LaShawn, I was just about to give you a regular self-righteous Pharisee rebuke for getting a divorce from poor Blogspot, but Whoa!!! What a nice new site!
Aw, it was worth dumping old ’spot for this, wasn’t it? God’s blessings!!

Doc Rampage 07.22.04 at 6:08 pm

Yeah! I’m comment number, like, 40 or something.

Congratulations on the move, the site looks nice.

Can you give me a bigger comment window though?

Oh, and if you want to go to the work, you can manually add the haloscan comments to all your old posts.

RickinVa 07.22.04 at 6:14 pm

La Shawn…

Can’t find the RSS feed to the blog (there’s no link behind it).

I want to update my blogroll… but can’t…

Wazzupwidat?

Heather 07.22.04 at 6:20 pm

Just discovered your site, via link from Mrs. Dutoit’s site. I look forward to reading more of your insights. Best wishes.

Darmon Thornton 07.22.04 at 6:21 pm

Congrats on the move — and onto WordPress, no less. Excellent choice!

Dex 07.22.04 at 6:30 pm

Hey I miss your picture already.

Andy 07.22.04 at 8:37 pm

La Shawn,

I noticed you’ve been tweaking your CSS even as we comment. I know I’ve had my share of frustration making my vision translate to on-screen reality.

Where time (web developing) is money, I’d like to recommend a possible solution. If you haven’t experimented with Mozilla lately, you really ought to tryout their new, and free, Firefox 0.9 browser–it ain’t your Mozila/Netscape of old, and it isn’t security-flawed like Internet Explorer.

Anyway, Firefox is lightweight (4.7 MB) and barebones browser only, yet conforms with W3C standards. The kicker is you can then download various, and free, extensions, and in this case, you certainly want to download an extension called Web Developer. By right-clicking on the page you want to analyze, you can toggle around 50 switches to see exactly which piece of CSS/Javascript is operating on any section or all of a webpage.

Most of debugging results show up inline on the very webpage itself, while the rest will open a new window/tab. For example, you can see which “margin” or “padding” takes precedence over a particular element. In short, it’s like a mechanic having X-ray vison to diagnose an engine.

Bear in mind that the majority of surfers use Internet Explorer and M$ has a habit of doing things their own way–so what displays fine in one won’t necessarily do so in the other. But as troubleshooting goes, Web Developer is fast & excellent.

Personally, I’ve always been skeptical of Mozilla/Netscape, although I’d give each major release a try before going back to IE. This time, I really think it’s a keeper.

Nice site (via baldilocks)

Boileryard Clarke 07.22.04 at 9:19 pm

well when you want to come back to the old neighborhood and get one of those great hot dogs down at the corner (the kind you will no doubt now be telling everyone was the best you ever had and whatever happened to it etc.), come visit us back at the Yard and help me fight off all those liberal people will ya!?

Seriously, this looks very nice. I am jealous of small print – it looks so post-modern. But am convinced someday we will all regret it…

Mark Alger 07.22.04 at 10:10 pm

Congrats! You will never regret leaving BugSplat. Like any kind of freedom, it can be scary, but the exhileration can’t be beat, for all of that.

Hey, Sis! Congrats on your new place. I’m so excited to be able to share in it with you. I also love being one of the first 50 here to celebrate with you…Lol. Better late than never.

*Hands LaShawn a lovely homewarming basket filled with candles, candleholders, potpourri, a vase and flowers*

Howdy, just wandered over from baldilock’s place. Great blog you’ve got going on here (WordPress rocks!)

Enjoyed your take on Dr. Paige, i liked him when he was running our Houston ISD and even better when he took the job in the Bush cabinet, tho’ it would probably take many lifetimes of effort to dent the pernicious influence of the NEA on our public schools.

Beau 07.23.04 at 8:22 am

Mah-velous…simply mah-velous. We are movin on UP!! I like.
