According to White House Homeland Security Advisor Frances Townsend, the U.S. Capitol has been added to the list of possible terrorist targets, in addition to those reported last week. Also see the Washington Times.
We’ve been under terror alerts of varying levels for the past 3 years. So what’s different about this one?
On my way to church this morning on Capitol Hill, I was stopped by Capitol Hill police twice for a cursory car inspection. Taking off my shoes at the airport is one thing; going through a checkpoint with cops looking at me through mirrored sunglasses with guns on a Sunday morning is another. Then again, Sunday isn’t considered a special day to Islamic terrorists.
The checkpoint was a stark reminder of evil in the world. In the middle of today’s sermon, I thought about having to pass through the checkpoint again on the way home. I could’ve taken a different route, but I like driving by the Supreme Court and Senate buildings. It’s trivial, but I don’t want homicidal maniacs (the terrorists) to keep me from enjoying what I love about my country: justice and democracy.
Still, America will never be the same.

It is sad indeed. For several years, my Synagogue has had armed guards at the door during high holiday services.
This year, I was in London, and the Rabbi said that we couldn’t stick around and individually talk with her as she loves to do, rather, we all had to leave as soon as possible and disperse for safety reasons.

The capitol police probably objects to being called homicidal maniacs.
Smooth Stone has a great post today about life in Israel and how this sort of thing is a fact of life. I think its dreadful but what are you going to do? I just pray that this is for good and never is used for evil.
I don’t think she was referring to the capitol police, but the Muslims, right? Because she doesn’t want fanatics to keep her from feeling like she can drive by the capitol building, I’m thinking.
If they blow up the capitol building (God forbid), I’d hate to see what they’d put in its place: some ugly, 60’s style building, no doubt.
A cinderblock cube, I’d expect.
But I don’t think anything’s going to happen. Security is so much higher than it was on 9/11 that they’re not going to let anybody suspicious within five miles of it.
Actus, you can’t be serious! I’m referring to the terrorists.
La Shawn, We all know who you meant.
Actus, puhlease.
