One more fake memos scandal post before moving on.

Dvorak shows us how to create fake letters.

Interested in a discussion about the IBM Selectric Composer? Knock yourselves out.

Did you know the memos were verified over the telephone? Way to go, CBS!

Donald Sensing has a tough message for Rather.

Does the blogoshere revolution spell the end of the network era? We can only hope.

Allahpundit says, “If we haven’t yet reached the point of overkill with typography minutiae, we’re right on the cusp.” I’ll second that!

Blogs for Bush has a list of experts who believe the memos are forged. They add:

Just about every expert and source (other than anonymous sources) used by CBS to support the legitimacy of documents it claims were written by Bush’s commanding officer Jerry Killian now declares that CBS is lying.

Sounds bad.

So…how about those Redskins?

Update: Did the NYT inadvertently publish a pro-Bush story? Wizbang weighs in.

INDC Journal has an example of a genuine military memo. Notice that it looks as if it were prepared…on a typewriter. It makes it obvious that the fake memos are fakes.

Must-see drawing by Frank J. at IMAO.

Who is this Bill Burkett character? Politburo Diktat has the answer. BeldarBlog has the latest word from a computer science Ph.D.

Ace of Spades HQ has new info: CBS won’t let “source” talk to press.

Time for bed.

  2. What I find interesting about this is that most people doubted the validity of the memo all along. It was really a rather minor component of the whole debate over Bush’s military service.

I think that it will continue to be a minor component. Considering that there are hardly any other records to ascertain precicely what happened in 1972 (and all that we do have might be fake), I doubt that this will ever be a closed debate.

  3. If they are faked, and it looks like they are, then somebody created bogus military documents and forged a dead man’s signature on them, to discredit a sitting president who’s up for reelection, in time of war. Somebody’s head needs to roll. America doesn’t need its electoral process manipulated in this way.

  4. Satire Roundup
[UPDATE: CBS gets in on the comedy by channeling Baghdad Bob: “The reputation and integrity of the entire news division is at stake”. Guys, that ship sailed when Murrow died] Many other people are doing a fine job rounding up…

  5. Nothing about this memo scandal surprises me. I worked as consultant for a Russian energy firm in the past decade. My field is supply management and what I saw Russians do with invoices and import documents to get around their cumbersome import regulations was impressive. They basically recreated any documents they need after a reasonable attempt to obtain the documents legitimately or please the corrupt regulators inhibiting them. It’s much too tedious and dull to go into but suffice it to say there is no document that can’t be reproduced if the situation warrants.

Apparently Senator(Don’t you have to show up to be a senator?) Kerry’s campaign is in such tatters that they decided Bush needed to have a scandal on 60 Minutes so they created one for old Danny boy Rather…

  6. Why can’t you Republicans talk about the issues?!!!

  7. Gosh, didn’t the Democrats bring up Bush’s NG service? And didn’t the Dems also bring up this letter? Republicans would love to talk about the issues, but the Democrats keep bringing up stupid stuff to distract the American people.

Here’s an idea: instead of running an anti-Bush campaign, try running a pro-Kerry campaign.

  8. Jeannie,
But a Pro-Kerry campaign would be like a compass at the north pole: pointing an all directions at once. At least with an anti Bush campaign, they have a consistant message… something John and John cannot manage themselves.
