A reader just sent me this link from MSNBC:
A visit to West Virginia by Democratic Presidential Candidate John Kerry has been put on hold.Kerry was scheduled to attended services at the Apostolic Christ Cathedral in Guyandotte on Sunday.
West Virginia Senators Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller were to attend with Kerry.
The church pastor, Reverend E. S. Harper, said they were not welcome if they planned to discuss politics during the service.
The Kerry campaign says the church issue did not affect the decision to cancel the trip. (My emphasis)
There are no words to express how impressed I am with this pastor. Many would tell Kerry the same thing, but it’s still good to see it reported in the media. Read about Kerry and his disrespect for black churches and the word of God here and here.
Katy sent a link to a story that goes into more detail about Kerry’s snub. I guess having to sit through a service and listen to a sermon is that painful for him.

That is awesome. Too bad many of the Black churches did not do the same.
“Didn’t affect the decision to cancel the trip”? Yeah right:-)
LB, any idea how we can contact this Pastor to express our appreciation?
Thanks for posting this, LaShawn. I’m wondering if some of the black churches may be turning against him here at the end as their positions solidify in support of traditional marriage.
It seems to me the black churches are doing for traditional marriage what the Catholics did for the unborn in the early days of abortion. Hopefully, many many churches will follow their example.
This is really good news! Here is some contact info on the church.
APOSTOLIC LIFE CATHEDRAL, 304-525-5451
350 STAUNTON STREET, HUNTINGTON WV 25702
Here is the website also:
http://www.lifecathedral.com/
The newspaper for the local area has a more in-depth story:
Do a search on “Kerry cancels visit to West Virginia church” and there is an article for the Herald Dispath (West VA newspaper).
RepJ, i think a lot of us had the same idea as Jeannie. i have been calling and the churches number is busy. i would like to find some way to let those folks know a lot of us applaud their courage in standing up and telling them “NO POLITICS” bravo!
also i was thinking of this the other day. i want to be up front and say i did not like President Clinton at all. did it ever seem to any one else that he showed up in a black chuch whenever he got his backside in a tight spot? and of course his buddies in the media always covered those visits in enthusiastic obedience. Kerry seems to be taking this page from Clintons playbook. got himself in trouble with one constituency over the Mary Cheney reference in the debate the other night; so show up in another church and try to take the attention off. maybe i am just cynical. but i am still happy! and i still think LaShawn’s beautiful smile and lovely face should be on TV somewhere.
THey have a wensite for the churcg. It has to be approved by LB because of the weblink. You can do a search on the name and find the church (if you use google the link will say Life Cathedral). They have a contact us link to send comments to the Pastor.
I must be tired…all the typos:-)
It’s great that the pastor of this church refused to be used for a cheap Kerry soundbite on the evening news.
Just surprised Kerry didn’t bring Edwards. After all he can make the lame walk can’t he?
After the Monica incident Bill Clinton made sure the talking heads saw him going into church with his Bible.
I had to laugh because the Bible was so big you needed a shopping cart to carry it around!
John had to be in a panic when he heard he would be treated just like the rest of the congregation in the church.
Can you imagine poor John, who is totally not religious himself (his own Catholic Bishops are ashamed of his pious pandering per a recent NY Times Article), being expected to sit through someone else’s sermon about a subject that he has absolutely no interest in?
It obviouly scared him so much it was worth changing his plans and lie about it. A pathetic empty dress shirt.
Martin Luther, after the Reformation, in one of his “Table Talks” speaks of, “The true church is an assembly or congregation…namely, Gord’s Word; what that says, they believe without addition, giving God the honors (old spelling).” We do not attend church to hear the words of politics and politicians spoken as a sermon but to hear the “Word of God.”
He must have been upset that the congregation was going to spend its time worshiping the REAL God, not John “the lame shall walk” Kerry. “What, you mean I’m NOT God?!!”
My family lives in WV, and Mom told me this morning that JK is pulling his advertising from WV and switching to door-to-door campaigning. Does that (plus this story) indicate that WV will most likely vote correctly in a couple of weeks? Mom said the polls have Bush leading 52-46.
Thanks for pointing out this story, La Shawn.
That Pastor Harper is likely politically liberal, and yet he had the good judgement not to allow petty leftist politicking in the church. Good for him.
Yeah, I guessed the pastor was probably liberal, just like Kerry, but his priorities are straight, unlike Kerry’s.
Thanks for the good news about WV, LawWife!
John Kerry would only go to a church to get votes and a photo-op. John Kerry, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson make a great photo to spread all over the country. They are all very smart and political. John Kerry has the best retirement plan of all, if his wife stays with him!
If I show article to someone by Michelle Malkin, Star Parker, or LB, they cannot complain that it was written by
a male chauvinist. I know what Walter E. Williams is called, and that is a black Rush Limbough.
Martin Luther started a revolution that has changed the modern world. He translated the Bible into German which helped form the German lanuage. The Lutherans in Germany call themselves the Evangelisch or Evangelical in English. I had to learn this 40+ years ago at Un. of MD.

Major props to this pastor. The pulpit is a holy place where the word is preached. A protestant pastor having a politician preach politics in the pulpit is like a catholic priest letting some other profession like a doctor or a lawyer serve the mass.
Sorry Kerry no politic use of the pulpits of Christ’s church.
This pastor is the man

I’m desperately hoping that West Virginia will swing for Bush. Hopefully, even if this pastor supports Kerry, the fact that he stood up against the politicking in Church (and the subsequent reaction, which I really suspect did have something to do with the Pastor’s decision) will get some people around here to take a good look at WHY Kerry’s in church “so often.” I’ve had that thrown in my face — the media mentions Kerry going to church, but not Bush, therefore Kerry must be a more faithful Christian man.
That kind of logic makes me want to scream, frankly.
Robin,
We never hear about Bush going to church however he goes every Sunday (to his church of choice), which is for his spitiual reasons and not political photo op reasons. It just irritates me to no end how the media makes out like Kerry is the poster boy for a “religious” person (mind you he doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve according to him, and I never hear him say he goes to mass all the time, however during the debates he never failed to say how hje was an alter boy and went to church all the time (whatever that means).
That people buy his “false prophet” message just totaly amazes me but, it is already written that people will fall for it, so I guess I can’t be to surprised.
Oh, man. I would love for Bush and Cheney to show up at that church on Sunday and not say a single word about politics. At least Bush could show that he respects their religion beyond how much it directly benefits him.
Hypothetical quote: “I felt that since Kerry disrespected these kind people so much that I would show them the respect my competitor is incapable of expressing.”
Key headline: Kerry disrespects black church in West Va.
I wish I had Karl Rove’s phone number.
I actually think this apostolic church might be conservative, but I could be wrong. They look pentecostal in nature, which is about as far from liberal as you can get. I could be mistaken, but that’s my off the cuff view. Time for church. Later ya’ll.
Is there any coincidence that President Bush’s approval rating has increased up to 54% coinciding with his increased attacks on Fallujah? Is it just a coincidence that people are more likely to say he is doing a good job the more they hear about muslim insurgent casualties and deaths than they do about American deaths?
The rationale is simple and I (we) have been telling him for a long time and it seems he is finally listening. It is NOT the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people that are important. It is the hearts and minds of the American people that are important. We will worry about what muslims think later. AFTER we win the war.
In the mean time, President Bush would be wise to continue the Gen. George S. Patton approach to this war and make the news report Iraqi insurgent deaths rather than US deaths contrary to what the old media reports. America responds positively to the news of dozens or hundreds or even thousands of terrorists deaths. So keep making news Mr. Bush until they stop wanting to be headlines.
Keep it up Mr. President!!! Just add more cities to the lists and take the fight to the enemies. No more cease fires. When they raise the white flag, respond with a 2,000lb bomb. No more mercy until THE WAR IS WON!!!!! Take mosques off of the protected list and make Iraq a free fire zone if you have to. Uncuff the nads of our fighting men. Show them what a REAL military can do when it is angry. Forget what the world thinks. They don’t think this is their fight.
As for those soldiers who allegedly disobeyed the orders to deliver supplies in that convoy? If found guilty, they should be punished to the fullest extent the UCMJ allows. The US military is already threatened with chaos if John Kerry is unfortunately elected. We cannot allow a breakdown now. We have a new generation of senior commanders that will soon be Pentagon level strategic policy makers and I am afraid the ones sliding into those positions now are weak, not tested in battle and heavily populated by Clinton era promotees. They may be enculturated with too much of a pacifist bent to be allowed to set or execute national security plans. We need hard core KILLERS leading our military. We the civilian population will decide when to turn them on and off on the battlefield. I don’t want a man wearing a bird or 4 stars on his epaulets whose only combat experience is how to negotiate a cease fire or process prisoners of war. I want commanders on the battlefield who know how to bust bunkers, break tanks, run through enemy defenses, flatten buildings and destroy cities. THAT is the job of a potent military.

Bush has refused to allow the White House journalists to attend church with him, that is why you do not see it. He did the same thing here in Texas as governor. Another genuine Bushism: His integrity is real!
VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 5 in Florida
If it ever comes up nationally and here is why:
Please use common sense my friends and ask yourself honestly who you think the cost will be passed on to. What steps concerning those presently employed do you think small business owners (who employ 80% of the American workforce) will take to bear this increased cost to do business? Do you think there will be a net benefit to you as far as your purchasing power? What about the ability of your employer to provide good health benefits if any at all? What will be cut? Drug coverage? Vision? Dental? How about if I, the small business owner, delay or eliminate a scheduled raise I promised you for next year since the government is giving you one. Since you went out and voted your own raise, I won’t have to give you one.
Think hard and ask questions before you vote yes on this feel-good robbery of the people who are actually providing the jobs out there. This is nothing but a piece of legislation where people are voting money out of your pocket without the merit to justify it. It is a clear abuse of our electoral process and you have the power to say NO! Think about how angry you get when members of Congress and the Senate vote themselves multiple pay raises without our permission in the wee hour s of the night in relative secrecy.
Yes, you may have another few dollars in your purse, but wait until you see what those extra dollars will get you when the price of milk, cereal, sugar and juice go up right along with the measly amount of change in your pocket. Your net purchasing power by definition goes down. Simple economics. The government should not be in the business of artificially trying to control the price of labor. Labor prices will set themselves based on the market. The market and your skills’ worth in that market should dictate.
Know that most minimum wage quality jobs are transitional jobs held by teenagers new to the job market, the unskilled, the under-skilled, the never wish to be skilled, the do not have what it takes to get skilled and the working towards being, but yet to be skilled.
We cannot afford to put more of a burden on the people who are actually out there chasing the American dream as courageous entrepreneurs and we certainly do not want to inadvertently punish the ill-informed consumer who thinks he or she is getting a deserved benefit.
John Kerry already wants to tax these people (income over 200K) at the federal level. A state wage hike cost combined with Kerry’s proposed federal income tax increase AND FEDERAL minimum wage hike is just too dadgum much to bear and it just isn’t right. This is yet another attempt to keep you DEPENDENT on Uncle Sam and his handouts. Don’t fall for this cheap trick and election year vote buy.
VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 5
Hoorary for this pastor!
Kerry is a proabortionists i mean he is a prochoice and he supports the right to murder while he is a big gun control freak and he is also a supporter of the radical gay rights movement he dont belong in any church he is a devil worshipper
Devil worshipper – strong stuff
Did you see he found another Black Church to exploit today (since Pasto Harper denied him a speaking role:-))
You’re twisting this event out of all proportion. Don’t you know John Kerry was for black churches before he was against them?
ROFL
That’s right Rick
What I don’t understand is why would anyone invite Kerry there in the first place? They know that it’s nothing but politics with him. How could Kerry have misjudged this church so badly, and how could the people responsible for inviting him have been so ignorant?
What is the definition of “selling-out?” Invariably, it must have changed over the years, as the world around us has changed. I guess you could say in a general sense that “selling-out” is sacrificing the goals of the many for the selfish needs of the one.
In the past, “selling-out” equated to dressing or talking “white”…whatever that supposedly meant. It could mean buying a house in a neighborhood that wasn’t historically or predominantly Black. It could even mean marrying someone other than an African-American. Yes, “selling-out” included who you might happen to fall in love with; something arguably that none of us has any control over.
It could mean attending a school that was historically non-Black. Even though Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. campaigned for a society devoid of color barriers; there are those who still felt that matriculating to schools other than those founded and majority populated by “us” is an act of selling out.
I personally know this to be true. It was said to me as a freshman at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Some African-Americans wanted to know why I didn’t go to local Howard or Morgan State instead of ‘white’ Georgetown. (Mind you, Georgetown was founded in part by an African-American man and Howard was founded by a white man…but that didn’t seem to matter to these people.) I was in their eyes…a “sell-out.”
Today I pose the question to all of you.
What is “selling-out?” Actually, the implied question is, “what is being Black?” For only after you’ve defined the parameters of what a ‘down’ Black person is, could you extrapolate as to what a “sell-out” would be.
What is “Black” in 2004?
It’s not Hip-Hop necessarily, as today’s Hip-Hop has been packaged, warped and promoted largely by non-African-Americans. Whenever you see a Hip-Hop artist who’s sold more than 2 million albums, know that the majority of those album sales are to non-African-Americans. Know that most of the radio stations in which it’s played are not owned by African-Americans. Know that most of the royalties in which are earned are not going to African-Americans.
Again, what is “Black” in 2004?
Is there anything that clearly defines the “Black” ideology and in turn identifies those that exist outside of it?
Let’s think of it another way…
Tiger Woods recently married…a White woman. To some, that’s of little surprise. Yet to most, he’s still a symbol of racial equality in a sport that refused Blacks for decades. The question is…does he carry the torch for African-Americans or has he “sold-out” because he neither actively claims his heritage nor has an African-American wife? Many generations have equated marrying outside the race as an unequivocal sign of “selling-out.”
Using that yardstick, singer James Brown, NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown and composer Quincy Jones for example are all “sell-outs;” if you only look at the women that have traversed their respective lives. Would that really be a fair conclusion given their contributions to Black America? Those men have collectively contributed more to the African-American conscience than any of us standing in ill-informed judgment of them.
Richard Pryor had done more for Black comedy that any before him and arguably more than anyone since…but would any of us dare call him a “sell-out” given the majority of women he dated? The truth is that some would in fact do so.
Here’s one for you…
Why is the term “sell-out” seemingly only used in conjunction to men who marry outside the race and not women? Does anyone remember actresses Alfré Woodard, Garcelle Beauvais, or models Naomi Campbell and Iman being referred to as “sell-outs?” If so, please refresh my memory. Well, maybe Whoopi Goldberg, I do remember some ‘comments’ about her.
Going one step further…
Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis will be serving time in a federal prison after this season, for his part in a drug buy. Let’s assume he has an African-American woman in his life and considers himself to be African-American. Can we honestly say that he’s less of a “sell-out” than Tiger Woods? In truth, who has done more to the detriment of his people? Who has acted as if they care less about the aggregate welfare of African-Americans? In the strictest of terms, who has done more to “sell-out” his people…i.e. turn his back? Obviously it would be Lewis, but it’s not equally as obvious as to who should be considered more of a “sell-out.” I’m not exactly sure why. Why doesn’t the definition include such random acts of stupidity?
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, prior to his sexual assault charges lacked the merchandising power that players like Cleveland Cavaliers’ guard LeBron James wielded. Kobe was the established All-Star with 3 championship rings and LeBron at the time was the kid straight out of high school with nothing substantive on his basketball resume. Even today, LeBron can only boast of being Rookie of the Year and not much else.
Yet and still, LeBron had already signed a $90 million dollar endorsement deal with Nike; Kobe’s deal was for less than half of that amount. In effect, Kobe wasn’t ‘Black’ enough and/or didn’t resonate with the majority of kids who lived in the inner cities and purchased shoes. At least, so was the perception.
Allegedly, Kobe lacked ‘street credibility’ and wasn’t as viable as LeBron in selling shoes. Kobe was the one who was ‘educated,’ traveled the world, spoke multiple languages and up until recently had zero dirt on him. To some, Kobe had ‘sold out’…wasn’t true to his roots…Mexican wife and White ‘mistress’ notwithstanding.
Who is the arbiter of “Black”? Who gets to decide which people are in line with the consensus of Black America? No doubt, we are not a homogenous group and hate to be stereotyped or grouped according to preconceived notions. At the same time, there is some sort of ‘understood’ litmus test as to who ‘is’ and who ‘isn’t’ Black. What I want to know is, who wrote the test and who is grading it after we turn it in?
When we say, “keep it real”…what do we really mean? Since when did “real” include the way one talks, walks or chooses to date? It would seem if that’s all it took to be “Black,” Eminem and anyone like him could qualify as “being Black” and not a sell-out.
In my mind, Dr. Cornel West “keeps it real.” It’s more likely though that he doesn’t even make the ‘official’ top-100 list of those “keeping it real.”
Is voting Republican selling-out? Some think so. Is enunciating when you speak, choosing not to use slang a form of selling-out? Some think so.
What I really need to know is this…when are we going to spend less time on determining WHO is a “sell-out,” (especially on superficial levels) and more time “buying-in” to WHAT is essential to us as African-Americans? When are we going to be less concerned with who supposedly exudes “Blackness” and more concerned with uplifting Black people? When are we going to be less concerned with whom Tiger Woods marries and more concerned with what Jamal Lewis is selling?

Dems causing problems in FL
Since Democrats like to keep bringing this nonsense up, I think it is now time to set the record straight.
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20041018/D85PUJCG0.html
Stay off the Republicans. We didn’t mess it up the first time and we aren’t doing it THIS time. You can watch “Fahrenheit 911” all you want, but just like in the last election it is Democrat precincts and Democrat voters having the problems. It is Democrat lawyers causing trouble and crying foul before trouble even exists. No one is being disenfranchised by the GOP. People are being disenfranchised by their own stupidity in being unable to read their ballots, speak English, voting for the same failed leadership to run the polls etc.
Olivia Fox said “Amen” to a caller this morning who said she was a teacher and then in the same breath told everyone to go watch “Fahrenheit 911.” Does that sound like the intelligent voice of someone who should be TEACHING our children? Telling them to GO WATCH A FICTIONAL MOVIE? Since she is not from this state, let me educate her before she goes back on the air sounding silly when it comes to Florida politics. Why did y’all unleash her on us down here anyway?
YOU BET I am angry. She said herrself that she would stay out of politics on the air, but she just couldn’t resist could she? I therefore as a listener, feel I have the equal right to respond for balance.
In the 2000 election:
There was and is ZERO evidence that the GOP, George or Jeb tried to disenfranchise anyone. This is confirmed by the majority liberal, Democrat appointed Commission on Civil Rights.
No one was disenfranchised. Anyone who was qualified to vote VOTED!
IT was Al Gore who tried to pull a coup and recanted his concession on the advice of his advisers who had a plan to steal the election.
It was the FLORIDA Supreme Court who tried to change written Florida election law and was TWICE correctly rebuked by the US Supreme Court.
The Palm Beach fiasco was due to elderly voters and idiot voters unable to perform a simple act of hand-eye coordination.
ALL of the counties where there were allegations of fraud came from counties run by DEMOCRATS. Democrat Mayor. Democrat City Council and Democrat SUPERVISIORS OF ELECTION!
Even liberal, Democrat, black female Judge Nikki Clarke sided with the law.
The voting machines that were missing were not found in a Republican car, but the car or a DEMOCRAT operative.
Ballot boxes that were not turned in but later found were found back in the polling place of a predominantly black precinct location.
The ONLY report of voter intimidation was reported by Haitian immigrants who reportedly told of how Democrat operatives threatened them with deportation if they did not vote for Gore.
The ONLY legal ballots that were targeted for disqualification were the legal ballots sent in by our military personnel overseas. Al Gore was the only person who actually tried to suppress votes.
Katherine Harris did her job according to THE LAW. Nothing more and nothing less.
If you can find one…JUST ONE black person or any other person who had their voting rights taken away outside an honest mistake, then I dare you to produce them and to produce the case number associated with their complaint. ALL who wanted to vote…voted. There were problems but they were corrected up to and including the FIRING of Miriam Oliphant, the BLACK Broward County Supervisor of Elections.

I never doubted that Bush does end up going to Church — I just kind of figured it wasn’t considered news.
Going to Church to worship and praise a loving Son of God who came down and took the punishment for our sins so we don’t have to is an “every day” thing (so to speak) by our society. Going to church to make a political speech while running for President, on the other hand, is considered news — and, sadly, not of the “informing us of a disgusting policy” type.
Something’s not right there.
Kodos for the reverend of that church this kerry is a confirmed supporter of abortion and the radical gay rights agenda he is a liar to and just how many sins has he commited? hey how about THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS he lies more then bill clinton and exagerates more then al gore
