WebbI am confident that Democrats will not select a black person to head the Democratic National Committee. In fact, if they select former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb or any other “person of color” I will allow the trolls I’ve banned to return and comment on this blog for one whole day. One catch: You will not be permitted to personally attack me.

According to the Denver Post:

Jesse Jackson, Sen.-elect Barack Obama and the Congressional Black Caucus urged him to throw in his hat, said former Webb aide Mike Dino.

Dino said it helps that Webb isn’t a Northeasterner and noted that Webb has long criticized the party for giving up on the West and ignoring its issues.

“In light of the election results, I think people should be looking to the West for some leadership,” he said.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Udall said Webb, an African-American, is “the face of the party in many ways.”

“He’s a Westerner; he’s a minority. Those two, in tandem, are powerful symbols,” he said. “I’d be proud to support him. I don’t think we could do much better.”

Others say Webb doesn’t have the energy his ailing party needs after being trounced earlier this month.

“He’s not current. He’s not fresh. He’s not particularly media savvy. His vernacular is not a values language. He doesn’t have a national audience or following,” said Denver political consultant Eric Sondermann. “I would assume that the Democratic Party has higher profile and far more promising possibilities.”

Can I throw a name into the hat? How about Jesse Jackson? Who’s more high profile than he is? I’d love to see him running things at the DNC. Democrats would remain the minority party for years to come.

Update: If there is anyone left who believes all that liberal jive about how much they like black folks, lay your eyes upon this, but don’t weep. Just get your heads out of the sand. Don’t expect any high profile liberal — black, white or otherwise — to speak out against this. If they did, just one, I’d probably have a coronary. (There are some nasty folks hanging out on discussion boards, but welcome to my blog anyway!)

Interesting take on black liberals and conservatives. Michelle Malkin weighs in.

Update II: Wow. I’m seeing the residual effects of the Democracy Project’s links from Instapundit and Michelle Malkin. :)

Update III: I’m the subject of some interesting conversation over at Democracy Project:

Are you for real? You know exactly what those cartoons represent — A bunch of racist Republicans taking advantage of Black People, period. I feel very sorry for LaShawn Barber, she is a good person. How she got wrapped up with you fools is, well is something that is almost satanic in nature.

She will wise up one day, I predict she will see the light by 2005 and her blog will change completely.

You all are a bunch of haters — Coulter, Malkin, and you all have the absoulute nerve to call yourselves Christians? Forget about it, you all are going to hell in a handbasket.

The blogosphere is something else, isnt’ it?

  2. Ls Shawn,

I lived in Denver under Webb’s tenure. I am as conservative and Republican as can be. I would actually be encouraged if the DNC went with Webb, from a realistic perspective (as compared to an idealistic one where they’d lay down their arms and admit defeat), in that he’d represent a much less leftist approach than their current representatives have shown.

Social and moral differences would certainly divide, but Webb has a strong record and a decent record as an effective politician. He could do no worse than the man who just vacated the office.

  6. LaShawn,

I condemn that cartoon. I am a liberal Democrat.
There is enough to critisize Dr. Rice on policy without
resorting to baseless, personal and racist attacks.

Hmmm… not all of us liberals are “evil”… most of us deeply love God, love this country, love our fellow man, just as much as conservatives… we just have very different ideas on how to act on our beliefs. Why must you always assume the worst motives and intentions on all of us?

  7. Hi La Shawn,
I tried to tell you-all, that Dr. Rice would have tough confirmation fight because she is Republican, black, and female! The cartoon writers are trying to make her a joke!
The only thing worst then being black, male, and Republican is being black, female, and Republican. Today the New York Times, Washington Post, and LA Times are the left’s mouth pieces. They tried to keep GWB from being reelected. The Disney / ABC last night, has been called by FCC Chairman Michael Powell! He is more Alma Powell’s son than his father’s. She raised him while his father served two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea where families are not allowed.
Expect more criticism of Dr. Rice. At 50, she is not qualified to head the State Dept., yet General Powell headed uniformed military at 51.

  9. That cartoon is really vile. I don’t understand why the Left responds in such a heinous way to a woman with obvious and exemplary qualifications. I would expect them to applaud the nomination of a Black woman to such a high Cabinet position just like they applauded women getting the right to vote in Afghanistan…oh, wait. Silly me.

  12. Chuck,

The vast majority of Democrats supported the liberation of Afghanistan, and are ecstatic that women havbe the right to vote there. Many of us opposed invading Iraq because we believe it diverted us from the War on Terror, and because Hussein was not am imminent threat. I respect that many others hold different views… Is it even possible to disagree on the issue without assuming the worst intentions/motives of those who disagree with you?

By the way, do you support us invading North Korea?
If you say you don’t, do I have the right to call you a Communist-loving pinko? Of course not.

  13. Speaking of the DNC, I watched the funeral of Maynard Jackson on CSPAN twice. When Bill Clinton spoke, I could feel the love from the congregation washing over him. Yet Mr. Jackson would have liked to be DNC Chair but it was Bill & Hill who wanted Terry McAuliffe. If Mr. Jackson had been DNC Chair, I doubt that the Democrats would be doing as poorly in the South as they have been. To be sure Mr. McAuliffe is a great fundraiser but the Democrats wouldn’t need as much money if they were more in touch with voters. Mr. McAuliffe said the Democrats were in great shape after the 2004 election because of all the money they had left in the bank! Well, if that’s the standard, think of all the money they could have saved if they hadn’t supported all those losing candidates! Every setback for Democrats since Mr. McAuliffe has been DNC Chair, has been proclaimed by him to be a “victory.” This description reminds me of the an account of a fight, “I placed my right eye solidly against his left fist, thrust my nose firmly between his teeth and threw him to the ground on top of me.” Somehow, I can’t imagine a Black DNC Chairperson being able to get away with talking like that.
OT Can you imagine if John Ashcroft had been the AG in charge of Waco, where about 40 black people, including children, were killed?

  14. JAB,

I’m glad to hear that the “majority of Democrats” are “ecstatic” that women have the right to vote in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, that alleged state of excitement was not evident in the MSM. I don’t recall many (if any) articles in the major dailies extolling this very real victory of Bush’s policies. In fact, I recall the opposite – close and constant coverage of the threat posed to voters in Afghanistan and the claims of fraud.

I’m not sure why you bring up Iraq and North Korea. Those comments are not related to my own post on the subject of the Left’s constant dissing of Condi Rice.

  21. I personally am not prepared to call this cartoon racist (I think racially insensitive is more accurate), its striking resemblance to the “yes saw, no saw” house n##### image is by far more insulting than some of the occurrences that have caused Jesse, Sharpton, and the NAACP to react. I’m curious on whether or not their liberal bias would allow them to make defending comments on behalf of a black conservative woman, cause if she were a democrat, they would have a field-day portraying the cartoonist, along with the publishing newspaper, as the modern day Ku Klux Klan.

P.S. James, you’re a …nah, I won’t stoop to the same type of cheap attacks that are presented in this cartoon and that we’ve unfortunately become accustomed to seeing from your party in the likes of Ted Kennedy, moveon.org, Michael Moore, and persons like yourself (but not you Jab, thanks for showing some class)

  23. I’m very confused why anyone would consider Oliphant’s cartoon racist. Can someone explain to me why it is racist? She seems to be portrayed as a “yes man” (or woman) conveyed through appearing as a talking bird. What does that have to do with being black or a woman? It’s common knowledge that Powell had differences with the administration while Condi does not. A cartoon criticing a black woman is not per se racist. Again, how is this racist? Please explain.

  31. Jab,
“Why must you always assume the worst motives and intentionss on all of us?”

In response to your question, let me say that I have no doubt that there are many good and decent liberals who love their country and church. However, the fact is that the main stream media, politicians, and political activists who speak on behalf of liberal democrats seldom debate or discuss ideas. Instead of debate and discussion, they seek to destroy their opponents through vile smears and slurs of the most vicious and slanderous kind. Thus, we hear over and over again that Clarence Thomas is incompetant, slow, unintelligent, inferior jurist. Bush is Hitler, liar, moron, dunce, AWOL, facist. Now, Condi Rice is being spoken of in racist and sexist terms that are viciously demeaning. I could, of course go on and on because there is no conservative republican that has not been demeaned and smeared in a similar way.

Could it be that liberal ideas are so bankrupt and reactionary that they cannot stand up under the light of scrutiny, debate, and discussion; and therefore, liberals choose the politics of personal destruction?

    Comment by MB — 11.17.04 @ 5:24 pm

  32. Thanks for your response. I really did not notice the lips and immediately think racist stereotype. But, I disagree with you. The drawing is a caricature. And I think it adequately captured Condi’s hair, eyes, and teeth. Maybe, the lips were enlarged to focus on the teeth. I don’t think the lips are so big as to be racist. And, even if they are, that’s a physical stereotype of black people, not racism. There’s a big difference, and I think people blur the distinction.

Finally, to Brett Kotmann: Condi is definitely smart, black and a Republican. But don’t try to tell people she’s hot. Some standards are universal no matter what your political beliefs. To paraphrase a friend, “She’s got a messed up grill.”

    Comment by Pat Green — 11.17.04 @ 5:58 pm

  33. It wasn’t good and decent people leading all of those “anti-war” marches. Communists and other such lovlies were the driving force.

I also do not trust the left in the war on terror. While they (rightly) condemn any violence at abortion clinics, they are quite slow when 13-year-old Jewish girls get blown up in pizza parlors. The left resorted to terror many times during the 60’s and 70’s.

I don’t like the fact that I have to predict this, but be on the lookout for some crazy dem employing that tactic here in the good ol’ USA.

    Comment by Steven J. Kelso Sr. — 11.17.04 @ 6:05 pm

  34. Someone asked if conservatives support invading North Korea.

I would support invading North Korea under these circumstances:

    (1) Reasonable expectation that we could sweep in and depose the NK government in short order with small loss of life, like we expected we would be able to do with Iraq’s. However, since the Clinton administration had it’s head in the sand and let NK develop nuclear weapons, the prospect of few casualties is gone.

    (2) If no other countries were around to support NK, like there were no others to support Saddam’s regime. Unfortunately, China supports NK, so if we invade NK we are risking war with China, which is too big a can of worms to open.

It would be a great thing to have the NK government deposed and a unified Korea again. I have no qualms whatsoever about the “legality” of deposing the NK government, because that governmnet has no sovereignty. It has none because it is not elected by the people of the country, but is a brutal gang of thugs that uses torture and murder to keep control of it’s turf. It has no more legitimate sovereignty than a gang of thugs would in one of our cities. If it is in our interest to chase a gang of thugs out of a country, and if we judge the cost/benefit to be advantageous, we should definitely do it. With that analysis, Iraq was a good candidate for interdiction; North Korea is not.

    Comment by MarkJ — 11.17.04 @ 6:12 pm

  35. Ms. Rice’s main problem in the eyes of liberals, I believe, is that she wasn’t selected because she was black, but rather because she is articulate and earned GWB’s trust. The symbolism of Powell’s being the first black sec’y of state, along with his less-hawkish position, made him more palatable to them. Rice has neither of those “advantages”. Hence the frothing-at-the-mouth reactions.

  40. Found you via Democracy Project via Instapundit. What a wonderful site! As an ex-lifelong lefty, I have been appalled at their outrageous bigotry, racism, anti-Semitism, contempt for people of other lands (I’m thinking of Iraqis), etc. My #1 issue in the election was the WOT/national security, but when I think of “moral values,” bigotry and anti-Semitism are huge factors. The left is so intolerant it is breathtaking.

I saw Brit Hume interview Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist, tonight on Special Report. He is a Democrat who gets it. I believe he’s the future of the Dem Party, but a whole slew of intolerant and hate-filled baby boomer, limosine lib Dems will have to die off first, I’m afraid.

I hear what you say about Jesse Jackson driving the party into further obscurity. I’m a strong conservative Republican now but part of me would like to see the Dems actually grow up and behave like responsible citizens. I’d also like my party not to go off the deep end spending and becoming power mad. But another part of me wants to see the Dems all rush right off the cliff. They’re doing a good job so far, and all these lunatics in the MSM, Hollywood, academia, and the arts (including these miserable cartoonists) are helping them right along. I’ll be enjoying schadenfreude for a good long while yet.

  44. Have you ever noticed that your typical lib has a certain level of tolerance for a standard white conservative. At least the lib will accept a white conservative’s right to exist, but that same liberal will go bonkers on, for example, a Clarence Thomas or a C. Rice. A lib would never suggest that A. Scalia was incompetent, but wouldn’t hesitate to suggest that C. Thomas was incompetent even though they appear to have very similar legal philosophies. This is but one example.

The arrogant condescending attitude of the elite lib vanguard extends to all minorities. This aspect of the lib’s attitude seems to portray a particular racism.

This with an Air Force crew that wasn’t even rated to land there in clear weather, let alone foggy conditions and certainly with a B737 that didn’t have the necessary ILS equipment.

I tend to think this is yet another one of those ‘Regulations be damned, doncha know who I am?’ situations where the crew felt pressured to get Brown where he wanted to go against their better judgement. Power seems to have that kind of corrosive effect.

My quasi-Forrest Gump moment was that I was supposed to host Ron later in the Summer at Berlin’s International Air Show (sorta like Paris Air Show & Farnsworth) and ended up hosting the Deputy Secretary instead.

  48. I think one reason, at least, for the generalizations made about Liberals being hypocrites when it comes to racism is the silence from groups who would speak up loud and long if any cartoons were to depict a Democrat African American female as they have depicted Dr. Rice.

Where is the outrage and the outcry?! The silence is so loud it’s deafening. The message, via the silence, seems to be that it’s OK to use racial stereotypes in cartoons when depicting Dr. Rice, because after all she’s a Republican.

I have come to the conclusion, after seeing how people of color who are NOT Democrats are treated, that only under the Democrat ‘banner’ are people of color ‘allowed’ to be powerful.

Only Democrats can bestow legitimate power and prestige on people of color that will be applauded. If a person of color is powerful (politically) and they are NOT a Democrat, they are fair game to be maligned with vile racists rants.

Does it bother some non-Republicans that the face we show to the world via our State Dept. is now the face of a black woman? Based on some of the racist cartoons and writings, it seems to bother some a lot. For those it doesn’t bother, where is the condemnation against these depictions?

Dislike Dr. Rice and her policies. She’s fair game to be dumped on, just like Pres. Bush. But don’t resort to such horrid depictions of this woman. Also, SPEAK UP and let people know you won’t tolerate ANYONE, no matter their party, being stereotyped as she has been.

I mean, can anyone imagine if Dr. Rice were a Democrat and had such things printed about her? People would be fired if she were a Democrat. Why is it different because she’s a Republican?

Personally, I hope (if she wants it) Dr. Rice gets revenge on all the racist cartoonists by becoming our first woman president. I can think of a few people for VP that would make that ticket pretty hard to beat. Hope I see it happen.

When he first came into office, he had a definite racial agenda in his appointments, but he got over it, managed to work with the whole city, and left office quite popular, despite the economic downturn.

I’m not a huge fan - he is a Democrat, after all - but the party could certainly do worse. And the promotion of a sane black voice to counter the Jacksons and Sharptons of the world could only be a good things.

and uplifting meaning of this for America, and much more from ABCNBCCBSNYT and more, instead we have more of the same from the left…to use one of the lefts favorite words this year, an absolute “cacophony” of ugly hateful voices.
I never felt as separated from the left as I do now, and these last few weeks are making me feel angrier and more resolute then I ever have felt before.
To stop the Left wing Media. Everytime I read the paper or see the news, I find myself cringing at the things they say that are so biased.
If someone would start a news channel that just reported the news, with no slant, they could really make a fortune.
Just straight news. Facts, what is happening, and let the audience sort it our for themselves.
Congratulations Ms Rice, Im excited for you, and
I wish you all the best!! Im proud of you and our President!

  52. Where, oh where, oh where is the black leadership? How do they sit back and watch a woman of their own race (Dr. Rice)who has achieved the pinnacle of success (against all odds) be vilified by “pond scum liberals” they embrace as their comrades.
I mean, aren’t even their instincts to defend against this as “men” stirred just a little? Incomprehensible!!
I hope Dr. Rice becomes the “new” leadership in the legacy of Dr. King. “Ignorants” despise her, just as they did him. (I think I’ve answered my opening question)

  53. Don’t forget the ultimate in Democrat racist cartooning, Ted Rall’s panel from July 5th or so, which as Michelle Malkin described ‘includes a frame depicting Condoleezza Rice proclaiming herself Bush’s “HOUSE NIGGA.” A black man demands that Rice “HAND OVER HER HAIR STRAIGHTENER.” His t-shirt reads “YOU’RE NOT WHITE, STUPID.” The caption below the frame reads “SENT TO INNER-CITY RACIAL RE-EDUCATION CAMP.” ‘

As far as I can tell, the actual image of the cartoon has been taken down, (http://www.ucomics.com/tedrall/2004/07/05/), but if someone is a subscriber they could pull it from the archives.

It is probably the most shocking thing I’ve ever seen from the Democrats on race, and Ted Rall is a hero to these people. I hope that one day, blacks in America will recognize how they are being used by the Left and recognize the truth for what it is. As Malcolm X said, “I say and I say it again, you’ve been had. You’ve been took. You’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok.”

  54. To the commenters,

Dems do you want to portray yourself as having values(of course I am referring to values of consequences)? How about condemning these dispicable cartoons? How about coming out against an attack against a highly intelligent black woman in a very sterotypical racist caricature cartoon? This would show that you are trying to turn the corner?

On a note, I believe that this will hit the MSM by let’s say, Saturday or Sunday. Fox News with Britt Humme will pick it up and the Dems may have a chance? Whadda think LaShawn?

  55. Cool blog, sir; here via Democracy project and Instapundit. I too have wondered where the fawning CNN and PBS hour-long documentaries on Condi Rice were. Where’s her People magazine article? Ladies Home Journal? She has an amazing story to tell, a story that typifies the American dream like few others.

Fortunately, her grace and ability speak for themselves. She’ll remain a formidable figure in politics for some time to come, I’d wager. By resorting to these racist cartoons, the MSM is simply exposing their shallow bond with minorites as one based purely on political support, not mutual respect.

  56. La Shawn,

Coming into this discussion a day late, has at least allowed me to see a considerable number of comments (55).
I am stunned and amazed that so many of the liberals commenting here fail to see the racist implications of the cartoons available by following your links.

These are the same people who call George Bush a “racist” in spite of the fact that he has placed more people of color into more positions of power, than any other President before him. These are the people who call any black with a conservative viewpoint an “Uncle Tom”, or worse, a “house n****r”.

It is quite apparent that the liberals in the Democrat party are still unable to get past the party’s racist roots. Wrapping yourself in liberalism doesn’t give you the right to resort to racist stereotypes simply because it serves your warped world view.

What is truly sad is that prominent Black Americans who have embraced liberalism and the Democrat party will ignore this type of thing. Either they feel that the end justifies the mean, or they are afraid of biting the hand that feeds them.

They should be trumpeting the fact the people of color are attaining such lofty positions of power (finally) in this country, but instead are more caught up in the fact that this or that person doesn’t buy into their own political philosophy.

Shame on the leadership of the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc. First, for not speaking out about what a proud day it is for this country to have a Black woman nominated as Secretary of State, and second for not demonizing and taking to task all of the racist liberal cartoonists and commentators for their attacks on Dr. Rice.

Disagreeing with Dr. Rice about her politics is one thing, but do it in a way that doesn’t recall the worst of this country’s past.

  58. From this URL:

    http://www.thespectrum.com/news/stories/20031004/opinion/389226.html

Wednesday morning, as the McNabb matter was boiling over, Limbaugh played a spot on his radio show about the Democratic Party candidates for the presidency. The satire carried a rather juvenile take on the “Gone With the Wind” film with each candidate portrayed as one of the movie’s characters.

When it came to Carol Moseley Braun, a black woman seeking her party’s nomination, the voice caricature was that of the Butterfly McQueen character Prissy. Her line? “I don’t know nuthin’ ’bout runnin’ fo’ president.”

  59. For Brad:

What most of the people here are saying is that racism is wrong. When it appears, the purveyor of it should be punished. I haven’t seen Limbaugh in that forum again since shortly after the incident you direct us to.

The point therefore is: Where it the outrage and punishment for the “artists” who draw these racist, sexist cartoons of a highly qualified, well educated candidate for Secretary of State?

And no, this kind of conduct is not exclusively liberal. But conservatives generally get punished for it, liberals generally don’t.

These attitudes sneak in all kinds of ways. Men candidates rarely find their “looks”, “hairdos” or “dress” a matter of comment. (Unless of course they are gay)

Even in this thread, there are comments about Dr. Rice’s appearance and affect that you would probably never see written about a man candidate.

  60. The DNC should hire this guy, who’s advertising himself on the liberal site TNR.com. He’s about their best hope:

  61. Dr. Rice is VERY well qualified for the position.

Just because a liberal disagrees with the war in Iraq shouldn’t make Dr. Rice unqualified.

That is the problem for liberals. They’ll need to get over the fact that people can legitimately disagree and not be lying, facist, etc.

    Comment by Baklava — 11.18.04 @ 4:59 pm

  62. I haven’t seen anybody pick up the seemingly obvious point that the Democratic Party has nothing to gain by furthering the cause of black people. The Democrats know that as long as the blacks need saving, they can count on the black vote. Thus, every black person in the country could drive a Bentley and live in a 10,000 sq ft mansion, and they would still need saving. I think the same can be said if you replace Democrats with “black leadership” (I’m thinking Jessie Jackson and co.).

I call this the “Moses syndrome”: Basically it is what happens when the savior of a people assumes his role of savior as a career. Moses didn’t save the Jews till retirement age after all.

In terms of the Democratic Party, I would say it goes further to include the statement that an educated inner city community is a dangerous community (politically that is). Without a poor, uneducated populace, what would be left of the Democratic base? Just check out the exit polls, if you don’t believe me.

In regards to the racism question, the liberals assume because they’ve assumed the liberal label that they are incapable of being racist, ignorant or any other base behavior. However, their racism has become more and more overt in recent years. Between obvious examples of racism such as the many political cartoons and examples like racism of the left towards arabs and Muslims (such as in the libs favorite Saint Michael Moore), how many such egregious racist comments and ethical slurs the left will spew out before even the main stream media finally notices and comments about it.

  63. Wellington Webb? He gave most of the city contracts to his cousins, bungled our new airport, and generally made a mess of things, in almost a comical way. In short, he was a good, classic big-city mayor and would make a fine chairman of the DNC.

  64. “I haven’t seen Limbaugh in that forum again since shortly after the incident you direct us to.”

    What forum?

“And no, this kind of conduct is not exclusively liberal. But conservatives generally get punished for it, liberals generally don’t.”

I didn’t hear a peep out of anyone when Limbaugh did his thing, other than on liberal blogs. The media never touched it. Hannity and Colmes didn’t have him on their show to explain it. Nothing.

I still don’t get how drawing Dr. Rice as a parrot is racist or sexist. If you disagree with Pat Oliphant’s opinion of her, then fine. But when were black women ever drawn as parrots? Is this some racial caricature I missed?

And the “Brown Sugar” thing in Doonesbury was about Bush always coming up with nicknames for everyone.

I would agree, though, that the cartoons placing Dr. Rice in the same context in which Limbaugh placed Moseley-Braun is wrong. I’m not sure what kind of punishment you want, though. After all, Limbaugh is still doing well, even after the whole drug abuse thing.

  65. “and examples like racism of the left towards arabs and Muslims (such as in the libs favorite Saint Michael Moore)”

Can you list some of these examples, please?

BTW, has everyone seen Michelle Malkin’s revisionist history of the internment of Japanese-American citizens? She was validated by pretty much every conservative out there despite the fact that people who have spent years researching the subject have eviscerated her book.

    Comment by Brad — 11.18.04 @ 11:52 pm

  66. From a reader/commenter:

How can Limbaugh complain about racism toward Rice when he did the same to Moseley Braun?

Interestingly, the so-called liberal media did not report on this, but Limbaugh, Hannity et al have managed to make these editorial cartoons most of which exaggerate her specific appearance (i.e., the gap in the teeth), as opposed to racial characteristics - into a major issue.

    I am astounded.
