State Of The Union: Live-Commenting

by La Shawn on February 2, 2005

in Bush Good, Conservatives

Tonight I’ll open this thread for “live-commenting” during President Bush’s State of the Union speech at 9:00 p.m. EST. “Listening” to you instead of watching these events on television and live-blogging has become a tradition on the LBC.

And live-blogging is too much work. ;)

Note: HaloScan users, to trackback to this post, use SimpleTracks. Word Press and HaloScan don’t get along well.

Related posts: Live-Commenting Right Here! (3rd presidential debate and follow-up post) and Live-Commenting the Debate! (2nd debate). I didn’t live-blog the first debate, but I live-blogged Rush Limbaugh the day after. I was bored.

And last but not least, I live-blogged the election, that happy night when Florida went to Bush. The post generated over 600 comments.

Live-bloggers: John Hinderaker Power Line will be live-blogging. Kevin of Wizbang won’t be live-blogging, but he’ll link you if you contact him. Captain Ed will be live-blogging. Blogs for Bush has a round-up. GOP Bloggers are live.

Ankle Biting Pundit will be live-blogging the Democrats’ rebuttal. Good luck with all that…

Vodkapundit is live-blogging. I think he’s “live-mixing” spirits, too. How about some Lockjaw to go with your drink?

Also see Patrick Ruffini and MUSC Tiger (Go Clemson!).

Speech excerpts from a reliable source:

One of America’s most important institutions — a symbol of the trust between generations — is also in need of wise and effective reform. Social Security…on its current path, is headed toward bankruptcy. And so we must join together to strengthen and save Social Security….

In the long term, the peace we seek will only be achieved by eliminating the conditions that feedradicalism and ideologies of murder….The only force powerful enough to stop the rise of tyranny and terror, and replace hatred with hope, is the force of human freedom….

The goal of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace is within reach — and America will help them achieve that goal….

We will succeed because the Iraqi people value their own liberty — as they showed the world last Sunday….The new political situation in Iraq opens a new phase of our work in that country…we will increasingly focus our efforts on helping prepare more capable Iraqi security forces — forces with skilled officers, and an effective command structure….We are standing for the freedom of our Iraqi friends, and freedom in Iraq will make America safer for generations to come.

These may only be talking points and not the actual text of the speech.

Update: The thread is now open. If anyone is really watching this thing, tell me what’s going on.

Another Update: I hope the Instapundit readers live-comment.

Yet Another Update: Text of the speech.

Final Update: Command Post has a chat room set up for you night owls.

Read Michelle Malkin’s wrap-up. Also see Betsy’s Page. Also see Wizbang’s round-up of SOTU reactions and reactions to the Democrats’ response. INDC Journal has some terse words for Wonkette.

1st:)

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:00 pm

Nothing yet going on. President is about to enter.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:02 pm

First Lady just came in. They have one Afghan woman and one Iraqi woman who voted in their respective elections on her left and right :) End of blow by blow

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 9:03 pm

I don’t think we’re going to get 600 comments on this thread. :)

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:04 pm

I don’t think I can type that much or that fast LOL

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:06 pm

UGGHHH

It’s “The Nancy Pelosi” monster :)

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:08 pm

Still applauding, no speech yet.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:09 pm

“We’ve been placed in office by the people we serve”

Ya think the Dems will keep that in mind?

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:10 pm

LB,
Did you read Colleen Carroll Campbell’s piece over on NRO today?

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:11 pm

He’s moving on to Social Security from the jump start, it looks like.

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 9:11 pm

No, but I think I saw it mentioned somewhere. I’ll check it out.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:12 pm

It’s good, I am curious if she is right about the speech he gives.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:14 pm

Hillary clapping along. With the eyes of bloggers upon her, she knows better now not to wear her “partisanship” on her sleeve as she makes her rope-a-dope move to center

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:14 pm

“Get rid of programs that don’t produce results, are duplicate. Spend tax payers money wisely or not at all”

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:15 pm

Like Clinton’s SOTU addresses, I wonder how much spin will come out of this one.

Even you die-hard conservatives I’m sure will be able to poke some holes into the PR blather Bush spews tonight.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:15 pm

ROFL
Yeah she better not forget how the pro-chife move made her dizzy (to steal from Scrappleface)

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 9:15 pm

Andy and liberal Mike: Welcome!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:15 pm

Stick it to the rich=stick it to small biz owners

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:16 pm

EEEEK…
it’s the Kerrynator

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:17 pm

Andy,

How many small business owners do you know that are rich?

My father and aunt have both owned businesses for years and are hardly rich.

La Shawn,

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I’ll be hanging out here for a while tonight.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:18 pm

Uggghhhh…”nucular” returns!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:19 pm

I’m watching ABC (wish Fox wasn’t all static) since it’s the best reception.

Here comes the energy hook–alternative energy, nuclear, modern electic plants, clean coal, etc

“4 years of debate is enuf” Bush sez, now get on it

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:19 pm

“nucular” was annoying – but I think Bush has begun to make it fashionable….

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:20 pm

When someone says stick it to the rich (like Kerry said thru out the campaign), it meant…
the small business owner

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:20 pm

Mike, I’ll deal with your question later. Suffice to say, w/o small-biz, our economy ain’t squat + the people they hire for naught

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:21 pm

At least he knows what it means :-) that’s all that matters

That’s better than the Leftside Bunch (sounds like a group), how bout the Left Side Crew

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:21 pm

Here we go

SS

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:21 pm

Strengthen/save SS

Left side ain’t clapping along

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:22 pm

Andy,

I agree with you. But, when I, as a liberal, say that the rich should actually pay their share, I in no way am implying that small businesses should be paying towards bankruptcy.

Corporations. It’s all about the corporations who seek all loopholes they can find. By rich, I don’t necessarily refer to INDIVIDUALS, but companies and entities.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:23 pm

SS, grow worse with time…

to bad those that can say nuclear, can’t count when it comes to SS nor do they have the body parts given to them to reach down and fix it

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:23 pm

He’s making a strong case for the reason to rehaul SS….

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:23 pm

16 workers/recipient back then
Now 3:1 annd fall to 2:1

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:24 pm

Pipe down, lefties…! Let him finish

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:24 pm

The “rich” pay 52% how much more ya want.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:25 pm

I definitely agree a complete overall of SS is needed. I’m just not sure I’m completely sold on PIAs.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:25 pm

Yup, it’s a no brainer Andy…

of course the Left Crew would rather that we let “them” take care of us

You know how we can’t take care of ourselves
YOU GO BUSH!!!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:25 pm

Left side sounding almost like the oppo booing/groaning at Blair

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:25 pm

The rich make 80%…how much more YOU want?

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:26 pm

Why don’t we make congressmen draw from SS instead of pensions? That should help….

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:26 pm

That should be your choice Mike M., and it should be my choice to invest

Samantha 02.02.05 at 9:26 pm

You know, I never expected the government to take care of me and mine. I never expected that Social Security would give me jack when I get older. No matter what is done with it I still won’t expect jack from SS. It shouldn’t be the government’s job to take care of me when I get older. It’s my responsibility and that of my family.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:27 pm

How to fix it? Some have suggested
-reduce benefits
-raise retirement
–etc

everythjing on the table, but we need to deal with it critically.

W will listen to any good idea

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:27 pm

I actually agree.

One of the ONLY feasible things to do in the near future is to raise the SS age.

It’s only practical. With MOST everyone living longer, people are not going to be able to retire exactly at 65. I think raising the age is certainly acceptable.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:27 pm

LOL

He told them he will listen if they have a good offer (maybe Nancy will start doing some work now)

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:28 pm

V IRAs – good start…

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:28 pm

Call it their reward for giving you a job

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:28 pm

I agree Samantha. To look to the govt to be there in my old age is my own suicide

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:28 pm

Renee,

That’s where I’m caught. I believe people SHOULD be able to invest. I believe the cap is $1300 a year…which isn’t too dramatic. However, I think it simply amounts to gambling.

What happens if an Enron happens to your PIA and $50,000 is wiped out? Then you’re poor when you retire. Then the government will have to step in to take care of you…

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:29 pm

Good point Andy.

We know how well that worked in former Socialist counteies…

not at all

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:29 pm

Yeah, the gov’t can’t take it away…

But, what about another Ken Lay?

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:29 pm

raising the age sounds like moving the goalposts. Give me my PIA and I’ll quit when I’m good and ready however early or late

Samantha 02.02.05 at 9:30 pm

The whole personal account thing makes no sense to me. If you want me to invest money for my retirement just stop taking it from me to begin with.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:31 pm

You a fool if you put all your eggs in one company. That is the moral of Enron, nuthin more, nuthin less

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:31 pm

Sam – you’d know what to do with it – but imagine how many would be clueless – even those who would think it was important to invest…

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:31 pm

Same gamble know Mike…
there is NO guarantee whatsoever that SS will be there for me and the govt can’t make a promise to take care of everyone at all times …

Enron happens, and it’s called taking the responibility to watch your investment wisely (I do have a 401 now). I can’t prevent everything but I can be cautious.

Many lost the Enron due to being tied into company stock (1 problemo right there)..which is volatile

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:31 pm

Marriage time :)

Samantha 02.02.05 at 9:32 pm

No matter what they do with the system it will still leave women screwed. Those of us who only work at raising our children aren’t going to be paying into the system.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:32 pm

Let’s ban the gays! LOL…tongue firmly in cheek.

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:33 pm

Human life not a commodity..

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:33 pm

The govt takes away by moving the goalposts and ultimately, you’ll get whatever they want to give you.

Look how they weaseled out of VA benefits. Everyone way back then knew if you served and retired, the US will take care of you. Now that’s gone.

Yep gotta watch out for Ken lay and ignore 500 odd congressional types

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:33 pm

I hear ya Samatha.

LB

He said what Campbell thought he would not say.

Samantha 02.02.05 at 9:34 pm

Anemone, those folks will be responsible for what they do with their money. Playing nanny to people who don’t know how to handle their money shouldn’t be the government’s job either.

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:34 pm

Deserves and up or down vote…..You said it!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:34 pm

On to SCOTUS and confirmation up or down and leave the posturing at home

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:35 pm

Sam – trust me, I’m sympathetic to your position. But at this point it’s unreasonable to propose something like that. This seems like a good starting point for weaning us off the gov’t teats…

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:35 pm

1st lady takes a bow

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:36 pm

Laura’s lookin’ good tonight…she looks ten years younger.

Lockjaw the Ogre 02.02.05 at 9:36 pm

Yep, I’m liveblogging, and allowing livecomments too. Nice to see you’re doing the same. Of course, I don’t see my blog having as many comments as yours, but…

Nice work.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:37 pm

Obama gives a standing ovation

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:37 pm

DNA and compentent lawyers for justice

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:38 pm

Competant Lawyers…
theres an oxymoron (joke)

:)

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:38 pm

Now it’s homeland security

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:38 pm

Andy,
Unless he meant making the ACLU competant ;)

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:38 pm

Waiting for Iraq…waiting for Iraq.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:39 pm

all rise to salute the defenders

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:39 pm

Anyone tallying up the Standing O’s? (which would be a good name for a rock group)

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:39 pm

Renee :)

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:39 pm

Mike,
He will probably start Iraq when he introduces the two ladies surrounding Laura. (I don’t think they officially introduced them)

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:40 pm

Will he mention how Al-Qaeda wasn’t in Iraq pre-war but now is?

Probably not.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:40 pm

Will maintain the course on WOT until it’s done. Looks like 1/2 of the left side is standing O as well

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:40 pm

Mike – I’m sure that means something to you, but it’s not obvious to me

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:40 pm

I have found the PERFECT SOTU snack: grape tomatoes.

These things are REALLY sweet.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:41 pm

Mike,
You need to stop watching Dan Rather :) or is it MSNBC?

Samantha 02.02.05 at 9:42 pm

Re SS, I know people aren’t ready to take responsablity for themselves but that won’t stop me from saying that they should.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:42 pm

Will continue to build coalitions to defeat terrotr

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:42 pm

Sweet? I’ve got M&M’s – now that’s sweet

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:42 pm

Renee,

Believe it or not, I’m watching FOX. I find its entertainment value to be much higher than those other “liberal” networks!

OK, I’m going to try this and see if it works. :-)

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:42 pm

ROFL

You can do it. I know you can.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:43 pm

Andy,

I just started a low-carb thing…now you’ve got me tempted.

Old Patriot 02.02.05 at 9:43 pm

The transcript is up here:

Of course, this is the pre-released transcript – it doesn’t cover what Bush may actually say.

Sorry, OP. The link is skewing the formatting. I’ll post the link in an update. – Admin

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:43 pm

Yup,

The smile worked…let’s try this one…:-(

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:43 pm

Samatha, the govt could pay some financial type columnists like Motley fool to develop Investing for Dummies :)

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:44 pm

The US doesn’t impose its government on others? LOLOLOL

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:45 pm

Here comes the Iraqis’ moment

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:45 pm

Who’s wearing those fishnets? Yikes!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:45 pm

Rice goes to ME and lay down our “law”

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:46 pm

What was my senator Joe Biden just doing now?
I suppose he’s gotta put DE on the map somehow.

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:46 pm

Come on Palestine, you can do it–live in peace.

Afraid it won’t work as long as moderates have no voice :(

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

Let’s see Mike…
We rebuilt Germany and Japan?

They are not America (especially not Germany) and France, well…

they were only 5 minutes from speaking German :)

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

Throw down that gauntlet, Baby!!

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

Tell me I wasn’t the only one that saw Joe Biden look like an idiot just then. He is going to hate it when he sees the replay at 2:00 AM on C-SPAN.

Baron

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

Yay! More regime change! More…more…more!

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

Mike M.
I work for one of the largest nuclear power companies in the world… and sadly, we have senior VPs that say nook-u-lar. Sadder still, more than a few served in the Navy on nuclear ships…

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:47 pm

weapons of mass murder — Syria Accountability Act

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:48 pm

Here comes Iran…

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:48 pm

Biden always looks like a idiot

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:48 pm

Renee,

France helped us 225 years ago.

Without them, we may be speaking English today…:-)

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:48 pm

America stands with you Iran…

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:48 pm

Did he just say “Uranian” people? Did I hear that correctly?

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Iranian people, we’ll stand with you. Sounds like a “go for it, we got your back”

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Biden looks like an idiot – Funny, Renee!

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Ok the smile didn’t work. I’m guess it’s because I didn’t separate it from the ellipse… :-)

Just want to make sure you saw this, Mike. No ellipses necessary, but I think you need a period. – Admin

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Yeah, and we returned the favor (instead of them becoming a wasteland to Great Britain…

and look at them :)

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Now, now La Shawn.

No way to refer to my senior senator!!!! :-)

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:49 pm

Hey Mike, why you nitpicking the locution instead of the substance?

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:50 pm

YEAH!!!

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:50 pm

The ‘blue tips’ have appeared

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 9:50 pm

Baron,
Biden looks like an idiot on good days. He’s used to it.
I’m just curious who the really angry woman in the red dress is… the one who never stands, claps or does anything but scowl. The cams never linger long enough for me to ID her. She didn’t even stand when Iraq’s election came up. Even Teddy has stood a few times.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:51 pm

Mike can’t have this much fun on the “lefty” sites ;)

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:51 pm

10-1 there are free elections in Iran in the next 4 years? Any takers? Too high or too low?

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:51 pm

voting=civic responsibity=respect from us

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:51 pm

“Even Teddy stood a few times” – and we know THAT can’t be easy for him…

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:51 pm

Andy,

With W. it’s just so easy. Sure, I agree Iran needs revolution (how left-wing does THAT sound), but if we think we cans imply invade a country three times larger than Iraq WITHOUT a draft…well, I’d like to see that.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:52 pm

SCSI
Which one?

I don’t think the “Pelosi” monster had red on.

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:52 pm

shelia jackson lee has on a red dress, and she is never happy. is it her?

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:52 pm

Uh-oh

Bush has whipped out the Arabian names. He’s gonna be stumbling on these!

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 9:52 pm

Oh, no. Sheila “If you will” Jackson Lee is there?

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:52 pm

Methinks sooner, perhaps 2 years–depends on their nuke status

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 9:53 pm

Ouch Anemone.
Mike and lefty sites… yeah, dissent and groupthink don’t mix :)
But we like Mike.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:53 pm

Renee,

Nope…can’t have this much fun. But, then I’ve always had more fun debating with those on “The Other Side.”

No fun to debate with people who always agree with you.

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:53 pm

Hum.

Freedom Advancing
Choice in Investments
Energy Conservation
Disciplined Discretionary Spending
Ethical and Aggressive Medical Research

Who could be arguing against all of this?

Liberals.

The same people who try to convince others about how evil this country is acting. The same people who accuse others of doing things wrong without facts. The same people who accuse Bush of lying when he said the same things that Clinton, Gore and KERRY said.

In the debate of ideas, centrist/conservatives are winning.

One thing I wish we could add to the list…. is ….

Why should we allow illegal immigrants when this country allows more legal immigrants than all other countries combined?

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:53 pm

Yeah, she’s there, but i noticed bush nearly did a u-turn to avoid shaking her hand on the way down the aisle

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:53 pm

Mike forget the draft total canard

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:54 pm

It will definitely be interesting to see how the domino effect that hit Eastern Europe, goes through the Middle East

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:54 pm

Baklava!

I was wondering when you’d show up!

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:54 pm

If we were capable of going toe to toe w/ USSR w/ all volunteer force, Iran ain’t squat. It’s not the military you need to worry about, it;’s the polis

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:55 pm

i think she should have made malkin’s sourpuss list. not because of anything she has done lately, but rahter just because she is still sheila jackson lee

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:55 pm

Andy,

If we go to war with Iran, how do you think we’ll supply our military with troops.

Yes, I’m tired of talking the draft, but I’m thinking practically here. Or, trying to at least…

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:55 pm

True Mike…
Plus you get to surprise your friends with “the Other Point of View”

:)

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:55 pm

Yep. Sweetness. Baklava

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:56 pm

I’m a C-SPAN junkie

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:56 pm

Baklava,

Remember your shopping list of issues each comes with asterisks attached.

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:56 pm

would it kill cheney to smile and attempt to shrug the “evil” image? I like the guy, but i see why he is so easy to pick on…

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:56 pm

Wooooh sKerry doing the standing O prior to the exit timetable

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:56 pm

Andy,

We didn’t exactly invade the USSR.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:57 pm

Well Mike,
You can thank the great properous 90’s for our lack of troops (I know, I was a soldeir during those 8 YEARS of draw down)….

to bad, becasue it at the PC, touchy feely Clinton years will take decades to reverse (if they can)

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 9:57 pm

Renee,
If I knew which one was the angry one, I wouldn’t still be wondering, now would I, Ducks? :)

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:57 pm

I’m guessing that those asterisks are accusations by yourself that aren’t factually based.

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

SCSI

LOL
Ya know, the minute I typed it, I thought that too…
I sent it anyway :)

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

But you try. A for effort. F on Facts.

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

“Unmatched in honor and decency”

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

Now, now Baklava

Let’s try and have a fun night. It’s I that should be a sourpuss (Ms. Malkin…take note!). This is your night to celebrate!

The Baron 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

feinstein is wearing red. she, too, is sad… is it her?

Andy 02.02.05 at 9:58 pm

Mike, transformation & build out–something Rummy’s been working on ever since he walked in the door. We’ll see the results soon enough

Baklava 02.02.05 at 9:59 pm

Let’s get this thread up to 300 comments. :)

Anemone 02.02.05 at 9:59 pm

Wow – powerful stuff…

Renee 02.02.05 at 9:59 pm

WOW
I am in tears now

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 9:59 pm

Andy,

I look forward to those results.

Baklava,

I’m game if you are. Let’s get arguing like we do so WELL!!!! :-)

Baklava 02.02.05 at 10:00 pm

uh oh. My girlfriend is expecting me to leave my house at 7PM….

Oh yeah. there is AM radio….

:) :) :) :) :)

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:00 pm

Renee’s right. Peace dividend=strained troops

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:00 pm

Look for an angry, portly black woman not too far from the front rows. The one that looks constipated.
I think John “Cody” Adams looked more life like and upbeat in his recent photo-op.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:01 pm

Big Standing O for the ultimate sacrifice

The Baron 02.02.05 at 10:01 pm

this has to be one of the longest standing o’s in sotu history…

Baklava 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

It’s hard to actually argue when the other has no logic or common sense or truth. :) Oh man. I’m too much to take today…

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

SCSI :)

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

LOL
SCSI
I think I know who you pointed out…
no name yet though

LOL

Constipated:)

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

What has you in tears? What is he saying/doing?

Anemone 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

Good speech, but I think about how this will sound to my coworkers – who are decent people but believe M. Moore’s lies. They’ll hate it.

That fat man’s got a lot to answer for.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

Was that a powerful moment ot what? WHen the mother of the soldier hugged the Iraqi woman?

WOW

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:02 pm

Wow…only an hour…

I know I’m young but I can remember these things going AT LEAST 90 minutes.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:03 pm

I predict that the left (DU, Kos, O-Dub) will have fits over the marine’s mother, and the purple fingers.
OK< that’s cheating. They had fits when the rumors of the fingers came out.
And now, he ended with ‘God Bless America’
Blood will pour out of their ears now…

The Baron 02.02.05 at 10:03 pm

God Bless America!

Thank you, La Shawn, for hosting. It has been wonderful. You are a real treat.

Baron

Anemone 02.02.05 at 10:03 pm

Mike – 90 minutes – you’re thinking of Clinton. He’s the only one that waffled on that long.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

They talked of the ultimate sacrifice. a soldier who died, his parents were there, he introduced them. They gave them a standing O and then the mother leaned down and hugged the Iraqi woman.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

Ya’ll need to check out the Skeptical Optimist and his fisking of budget deficits, SS etc.

He’s got a bunch of glossy 8×10 color charts, but more’n likely the left will be too blind to see it
http://www.optimist123.com/optimist/

Anemone 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

LaShawn – thank you! Great hostess!

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

SCSI that woman they just showed?

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

SCSIWuzzy,

The left shouldn’t be up-in-arms about those parents.

Just like the right shouldn’t be up-in-arms about Lila Lipscomb’s reaction to her son’s death.

Both parties lost a child and both have the right to share their grief.

Baklava 02.02.05 at 10:04 pm

I think on evcery issue Bush seemed moderate, made common sense and passed the compassion test.

The average American looking at this could probably find no wrong with his speech except for the stance that the War on Terror continues. But even that makes common sense. If only 3/4ths of Al Qaida leaders have been killed or captured then keep going.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:05 pm

Dan Rather sounds like they have a knife at the base of his spine… insisting that he behave himself.
And so far, no bizzare pseudo-homespun sayings.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:05 pm

Anemone,

Well, I like waffles. Particularly with strawberries and whipped cream.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:06 pm

Alternatively, SOTU + Inaugural=90 mins

Keep it short, sweet

JoeEgo 02.02.05 at 10:06 pm

I watched the CSPAN net feed so I couldn’t make the House audience out too well.

Can somebody tell me: Did Kennedy, Kerry, Boxer, or Pelosi stand and applaud when the Iraqi woman and/or the Marine’s parents were introduced?

Baklava 02.02.05 at 10:06 pm

Yes Mike.

Clinton lasted 90 minutes and tried to tarnish the character of Republicans for 90 minutes while doing so. Fortunately for talk radio and the Internet Clinton’s bully pulpit and lies did not help him as it would’ve in a previous age with only CBS, NBC, and ABC.

GOOD NIGHT LA SHAWN !

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:07 pm

Cookie Roberts struck by the HUG

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:07 pm

I couldn’t tell for sure Joe. It looked like everyone stood though.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:08 pm

Commercial break while Nancy & Reid get ready

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:08 pm

Mike, I agree with you. But that won’t stop DU et al from having a tamtrum over it.
Ah… and Dan says SS is just fine… and finally perked up getting to announce that the loyal opposistion would be on after the commercial. And after all but the hard core politics addicts have turned off.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:09 pm

So now, everyone’s homework…
go study how the SS funds are in notes that the govt borrows against…

Not a secret:-)

and we all know how the govt will pay it back…

Still want them to hold all your money?

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:09 pm

Baklava,

Well, Bush has given four previous speeches and I clearly remember a majority of them being at least 90 minutes.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:10 pm

Renee… I can’t tell you. C-span and the networks are using different feeds. And between reading the comments and typing, I’m not always focused enough to catch it.
When will Cspan re-run?

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 10:10 pm

Is it over?

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:10 pm

Jackson Lee was in Red…
I don’t know who else so I will have to watch the re-runs

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:11 pm

Yes it is

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 10:11 pm

Thanks for keeping me company! :D

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:12 pm

Here comes the response…

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:12 pm

Peter Jennings must be jet-lagged, he’s been stumbling over even the simplest word and stuttering

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:12 pm

CSI rerun time

The Pelosi Monster with her Joan Rivers plastered smile is on

where’s the mute (before she opens her mouth)

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:13 pm

Reid said the G word, alluding to morals

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:13 pm

Mike, there’s your assignment then. Find out how long Bush 43, Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan and Carter lasted.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:13 pm

Looks like we got you over 200, La Shawn.

Just think…you could’ve hit 300 if Bush had gone 15 minutes longer! :-)

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:13 pm

LOL

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:14 pm

Wuzzy,

I’m already on it. All I’ve found so far are a bunch of elementary school websites quizzing students on who gave the longest speech.

The answer is Harry Truman. I didn’t get the year, though.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:14 pm

Oh NO

Not the G word?

The ACLU will be all over him

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:14 pm

My Lord… Reid has the smallest eyes I’ve ever seen. They’re like the dots they use in cartoons.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:14 pm

Renee,

You’ve thought the same thing as I re: Pelosi’s elastic face.

It really is quite prominent.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:14 pm

At least Reid comes on like a soft-spoken grandpa unlike the snarling Daschle

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:15 pm

I didn’t notice but now that you mention…

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:15 pm

Well, Truman only gave a few :)

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:15 pm

Yeah,
I noticed her smile when she walked in…
it was just so…

Hollywood:)

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:15 pm

Harry Reid, the whole “I was poor and my father worked hard” thing didn’t work for John Edwards…and it’s not working for you. stop.

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:16 pm

Everything is so…darn…scripted. Both sides. Of course, I realize all parties are reading from TelePrompter’s…but can’t they try to roughen it up a bit.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:16 pm

You’re killing me SCSI:)

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:16 pm

Man, is he proud of his groundhog joke

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:18 pm

I won’t be suprised if when they pan out Pelosi is sleep.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:18 pm

Too right Scooter.
I’d care if he told me what hard work he did.
Telling me your father was poor, etc, fine, but it doesn’t impart any nobility to YOU.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:18 pm

Oh-oh It is the govt that builds the economy and bad-ole China and India will be taking jobs that are OURS. Guess he never heard of creative destruction.

Oh dear, where have the buggy whip makers, the blacksmiths, the iceman to fill our iceboxes or the milkman gone? Where is the elevator operator, the switchboard operator, streetsweeper? Where was the govt to make sure those jobs remained ours.

Darn the Maytag guy

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:18 pm

We is all God’s chillun

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:19 pm

Nancy got another shot of Botox

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:19 pm

Renee… sorry, but I cannot help it
Scooter, it’s after dark. Vampires sleep when the sun is UP.

The Baron 02.02.05 at 10:20 pm

she sounds like a third grader reading see spot run!

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:20 pm

Is she purposely forcing her eyes open?

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:20 pm

I guess after her meltdown last year, they’re making her stick to the script instead of ad-libbing bwahahaha

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:20 pm

You know, I know that Reid was on for less than 15 minutes… but it felt longer than Bush’s hour.
How long is the average opposistion rebuttal, Mike?

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 10:21 pm

Is she purposely forcing her eyes open?

*Sliding out of chair*

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:21 pm

I guess the mantra this time is to be soft-spoken

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:21 pm

LOL

I forget what she did last year. ter her rants of the past year, I just mute her. I do wonder though, does hse act this way at home (if so her hsuband lives with the remote and volume on hi, or ear muffs)

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:22 pm

I didn’t know Joan Crawford was a congresswoman.

The Baron 02.02.05 at 10:22 pm

why did they choose nancy “i can’t really read that well” pelosi? She makes bush look like churchill

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:22 pm

Contrast Pelosi to Reid… her eyes look huge. Like dolls eyes. creepy dolls eyes. like the Bride OF Chucky or something.
between them, if they bred, their children might have normal peepers.
and don’t get me started on the permanent surprise look her eyebrows have.
Did she borrow some of Kerry’s botox?

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:23 pm

Andy, your comments are affecting my typing…

I am laughing to hard

Laughing and typing do NOT mix

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:23 pm

Joan Rivers rather…

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:23 pm

Zzzzzz…she’s boring me.

Samantha 02.02.05 at 10:23 pm

I find it rather ironic that people who would have mocked me for my moral values, had they stopped mocking others for those same views long enough to ask me about mine, have all of a sudden discovered their own moral values. It all rings false to me.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:24 pm

ROFL

She is actually soft spoken tonight (as opposed to the banshee yell from the pre-buttal).

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:24 pm

her 3-point exit strategy
1 Responsibility for Iraqi security transferred to Iraqis Duh
2 Infrasture improvement too slow. Duh?
3, I missed it, but it sounded like #1 triple Duh

Yo Nace, how long did it take to rebuild East German infrastructure afte the wal;l fell??? Try 2 years for the core and 10 for general. And that’s with no insurgents or what have you

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:25 pm

and both of them. I know it’s from not being used to a telepromter, but they pause, and look ready for a wrap up every so often. It shows that they didn’t rehearse or run through their remarks.
She should ask Arnold for presentation advice. Like how to impart feeling at the right moment.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:25 pm

Are you talking about the rebuttals Samantha?

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:25 pm

Somebody play the “wrap it up” music. plzzzzz

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:25 pm

Woooh, she honors our veterans

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:26 pm

Those over-white teeth…that tight face…those full lips.

This woman is ALL Hollywood.

Scooter 02.02.05 at 10:26 pm

Andy, she probably wants a cookie.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:26 pm

YEAH

She’s done, you can wake up Mike.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:27 pm

That botox is getting on my nerves. My ears tell me she’s live, my eyes tells me she looks like a talking doll only the lips are a-flappin

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:27 pm

Baron, the phonics monkey is playing in the background, keeping her on cadence.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:28 pm

George Steph says that Reid claims he has 45 votes to kill ANY SS initiatives. Oh yeah, he must not be thinking ahead to 2006

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:29 pm

ABC’s pretty much done, now talking to a correspondent about how quiet Iraq is and their hope that the insurgents are regrouping

Samantha 02.02.05 at 10:29 pm

The rebuttals and all the values talk that popped up the day after the election when Bush’s win all of a sudden became the fault of Christians.

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:29 pm

No kidding Andy…
especially when there are quite a few polls showing that “minorities” (hispanics and blacks)…

more than HALF support SS reform to include privitization…
they better go talk to those who voted them in before they make such BOLD statements

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:30 pm

Somebody tell Disneyland one of the animatronics got away, and is the house minority leader!

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:31 pm

Samantha,
It was pretty stomach turning. The one thing most of us like is to know where someone stands. Even if we don’t agree, we want to know where you stand (not changing with the wind).

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:31 pm

Oh Oh Tavis on ABC. He’s looking irate

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:31 pm

Tavis: Bush is a divider and he’s thrown down the chjal;lenge to fight abd divide US

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:31 pm

I got a call in to Disney now :-)

They put me on hold…dang

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:32 pm

shhhhh, Renee. You know it’s not the minorities opinion until the left tells them it’s their opinion.
Those ppl you mention are plants from Rove.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:32 pm

Tavis will be sprouting more for the next half-hgour

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:33 pm

SCSI, that was better than my lame John “GI-Joe” Adams allusion

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:34 pm

ROFL

LB, SCSI is on a roll :)

SCSI don’t get me started on that issue :0

Mike M. 02.02.05 at 10:36 pm

Well, everyone…good night.

It was fun “crashing” your party tonight. I had a good time.

Let’s do it again next year.

Check out my site. Not really any politics…but you will learn a bit about me. The address is linked at my name.

Good night!

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:36 pm

Nite Mike

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:36 pm

Another correspondent reports to Jennings that her blackberry was bombarded by “Bush Lied” He can’t do this w/o the Dems. She says they’re running scared precisely because he threw down and now they have to put up or find a way to weasel out w/o getting tagged in 06

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:38 pm

Too funny

I just wish the people who voted them in would tell them to STOP WHINING and get some work done…

enough is enough

Bobby 02.02.05 at 10:38 pm

Possibly… did anyone else notice the number of times the camera was on Obama and he wasn’t smiling/clapping/anything? It was like… ‘I am Obama… arbiter of all that is wise and good… and so… I choose not to clap at this time.’ BTW, did anyone else see Bush wink at someone during the judge remarks? I swear he did!

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:39 pm

I meant to say she was getting tons of emaols from Dems all thru the SOTU. Must be the left wing version of live-blogging: it’s live-emailing to your fav journalist to spin the post SOTU

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:39 pm

LOL
Bobby, Bush always winks :)

But I missed Obama.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:40 pm

Andy, thanks. You’re no slouch yourself tonight.
You know, with my sarcasm and your fisking talents, you could become a terror of the blogosphere… No puppy blending tho. To paraphrase Meatloaf “I would do anything for pings… but I won’t do that”

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:40 pm

Ahhh

Ok, now they need to stop emailing and tell their reps to GET TO WORK (being lazy on our tax dollar) :)

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:41 pm

Bobby, I’m gonna have to check out a web feed tomorrow and catch the little stuff. Anyone know where I can go to watch a stream?

Renee 02.02.05 at 10:43 pm

Good night everyone.

This really was fun.

Thanks LB for opening it up for all of us.

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:43 pm

Bobby, Bush winked at one of the Supremes, seated in the front row.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:43 pm

SCSI, The dems need to quit macking on SPan & tofu and sink their teeth into real meat, even meatloaf is better than no meat

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:44 pm

Span, scratch, SPAM

SCSIwuzzy 02.02.05 at 10:44 pm

Yep. Thanks for the real estate LB.

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:45 pm

George Will sez this Prez don’t know caution, he’s going for broke and dismissing this “lame-duckery”

Andy 02.02.05 at 10:47 pm

Thanks La Shawn, I’m fixing to bug out–got work to do

La Shawn 02.02.05 at 10:49 pm

Thanks for stopping by, Andy. I’m going to sleep…

Samantha 02.02.05 at 10:53 pm

Night y’all. Thanks for sharing.

DPH 02.02.05 at 11:31 pm

Seeing the Dems respond to Bush, they just do not think he is a decent man. Said much better here:

The Death of Decency

Ryan 02.02.05 at 11:48 pm

Actually, on several online dictionaries the pronounciation button pronounces it BUsh’s way.

Jim R 02.03.05 at 10:10 am

We plan to Dashle Pelosi and Boxer here in CA.

CaptainMainline 02.03.05 at 1:59 pm

Pelosi reminded me of Michael Jackson last night. I searched and found this link:

http://www.simmins.org/Blog/2003_04_06_arch.html#92445819

Funny stuff. They both look and act like aliens- and in much the same way on both accounts.

SCSIwuzzy 02.03.05 at 5:40 pm

Man, Daschle is a verb now too?
I remember when it became a non-proper noun, like “stick it in your daschle” or “you are such a daschle”.
Where’s Webster’s? They’ll need a monthy edition to keep up with the blogs.
