Tonight I’ll open this thread for “live-commenting” during President Bush’s State of the Union speech at 9:00 p.m. EST. “Listening” to you instead of watching these events on television and live-blogging has become a tradition on the LBC.
And live-blogging is too much work.
Note: HaloScan users, to trackback to this post, use SimpleTracks. Word Press and HaloScan don’t get along well.
Related posts: Live-Commenting Right Here! (3rd presidential debate and follow-up post) and Live-Commenting the Debate! (2nd debate). I didn’t live-blog the first debate, but I live-blogged Rush Limbaugh the day after. I was bored.
And last but not least, I live-blogged the election, that happy night when Florida went to Bush. The post generated over 600 comments.
Live-bloggers: John Hinderaker Power Line will be live-blogging. Kevin of Wizbang won’t be live-blogging, but he’ll link you if you contact him. Captain Ed will be live-blogging. Blogs for Bush has a round-up. GOP Bloggers are live.
Ankle Biting Pundit will be live-blogging the Democrats’ rebuttal. Good luck with all that…
Vodkapundit is live-blogging. I think he’s “live-mixing” spirits, too. How about some Lockjaw to go with your drink?
Also see Patrick Ruffini and MUSC Tiger (Go Clemson!).
Speech excerpts from a reliable source:
One of America’s most important institutions — a symbol of the trust between generations — is also in need of wise and effective reform. Social Security…on its current path, is headed toward bankruptcy. And so we must join together to strengthen and save Social Security….In the long term, the peace we seek will only be achieved by eliminating the conditions that feedradicalism and ideologies of murder….The only force powerful enough to stop the rise of tyranny and terror, and replace hatred with hope, is the force of human freedom….
The goal of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace is within reach — and America will help them achieve that goal….
We will succeed because the Iraqi people value their own liberty — as they showed the world last Sunday….The new political situation in Iraq opens a new phase of our work in that country…we will increasingly focus our efforts on helping prepare more capable Iraqi security forces — forces with skilled officers, and an effective command structure….We are standing for the freedom of our Iraqi friends, and freedom in Iraq will make America safer for generations to come.
These may only be talking points and not the actual text of the speech.
Update: The thread is now open. If anyone is really watching this thing, tell me what’s going on.
Another Update: I hope the Instapundit readers live-comment.
Yet Another Update: Text of the speech.
Final Update: Command Post has a chat room set up for you night owls.

Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:16 pm
Andy,
How many small business owners do you know that are rich?
My father and aunt have both owned businesses for years and are hardly rich.
La Shawn,
Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I’ll be hanging out here for a while tonight.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:17 pm
Uggghhhh…”nucular” returns!
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:18 pm
I’m watching ABC (wish Fox wasn’t all static) since it’s the best reception.
Here comes the energy hook–alternative energy, nuclear, modern electic plants, clean coal, etc
“4 years of debate is enuf” Bush sez, now get on it
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:19 pm
“nucular” was annoying - but I think Bush has begun to make it fashionable….
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 9:19 pm
When someone says stick it to the rich (like Kerry said thru out the campaign), it meant…
the small business owner
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:20 pm
Mike, I’ll deal with your question later. Suffice to say, w/o small-biz, our economy ain’t squat + the people they hire for naught
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:20 pm
At least he knows what it means
that’s all that matters
That’s better than the Leftside Bunch (sounds like a group), how bout the Left Side Crew
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:21 pm
Here we go
SS
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:21 pm
Strengthen/save SS
Left side ain’t clapping along
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:21 pm
Andy,
I agree with you. But, when I, as a liberal, say that the rich should actually pay their share, I in no way am implying that small businesses should be paying towards bankruptcy.
Corporations. It’s all about the corporations who seek all loopholes they can find. By rich, I don’t necessarily refer to INDIVIDUALS, but companies and entities.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:22 pm
SS, grow worse with time…
to bad those that can say nuclear, can’t count when it comes to SS nor do they have the body parts given to them to reach down and fix it
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:23 pm
He’s making a strong case for the reason to rehaul SS….
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 9:23 pm

Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:24 pm
I definitely agree a complete overall of SS is needed. I’m just not sure I’m completely sold on PIAs.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:25 pm
Yup, it’s a no brainer Andy…
of course the Left Crew would rather that we let “them” take care of us
You know how we can’t take care of ourselves
YOU GO BUSH!!!
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:25 pm
Left side sounding almost like the oppo booing/groaning at Blair
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:25 pm
The rich make 80%…how much more YOU want?
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:25 pm
Why don’t we make congressmen draw from SS instead of pensions? That should help….
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 9:26 pm
That should be your choice Mike M., and it should be my choice to invest
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:26 pm
You know, I never expected the government to take care of me and mine. I never expected that Social Security would give me jack when I get older. No matter what is done with it I still won’t expect jack from SS. It shouldn’t be the government’s job to take care of me when I get older. It’s my responsibility and that of my family.
Comment by Samantha — 02.02.05 @ 9:26 pm
How to fix it? Some have suggested
-reduce benefits
-raise retirement
–etc
everythjing on the table, but we need to deal with it critically.
W will listen to any good idea
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:27 pm
I actually agree.
One of the ONLY feasible things to do in the near future is to raise the SS age.
It’s only practical. With MOST everyone living longer, people are not going to be able to retire exactly at 65. I think raising the age is certainly acceptable.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:27 pm
LOL
He told them he will listen if they have a good offer (maybe Nancy will start doing some work now)
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:27 pm

Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:28 pm
I agree Samantha. To look to the govt to be there in my old age is my own suicide
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:28 pm
Renee,
That’s where I’m caught. I believe people SHOULD be able to invest. I believe the cap is $1300 a year…which isn’t too dramatic. However, I think it simply amounts to gambling.
What happens if an Enron happens to your PIA and $50,000 is wiped out? Then you’re poor when you retire. Then the government will have to step in to take care of you…
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:28 pm
Good point Andy.
We know how well that worked in former Socialist counteies…
not at all
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:29 pm
Yeah, the gov’t can’t take it away…
But, what about another Ken Lay?
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:29 pm
raising the age sounds like moving the goalposts. Give me my PIA and I’ll quit when I’m good and ready however early or late
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:29 pm
The whole personal account thing makes no sense to me. If you want me to invest money for my retirement just stop taking it from me to begin with.
Comment by Samantha — 02.02.05 @ 9:30 pm
You a fool if you put all your eggs in one company. That is the moral of Enron, nuthin more, nuthin less
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:31 pm
Sam - you’d know what to do with it - but imagine how many would be clueless - even those who would think it was important to invest…
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 9:31 pm
Same gamble know Mike…
there is NO guarantee whatsoever that SS will be there for me and the govt can’t make a promise to take care of everyone at all times …
Enron happens, and it’s called taking the responibility to watch your investment wisely (I do have a 401 now). I can’t prevent everything but I can be cautious.
Many lost the Enron due to being tied into company stock (1 problemo right there)..which is volatile
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:31 pm

Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 9:31 pm
No matter what they do with the system it will still leave women screwed. Those of us who only work at raising our children aren’t going to be paying into the system.

Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 9:32 pm
Human life not a commodity..
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 9:33 pm
The govt takes away by moving the goalposts and ultimately, you’ll get whatever they want to give you.
Look how they weaseled out of VA benefits. Everyone way back then knew if you served and retired, the US will take care of you. Now that’s gone.
Yep gotta watch out for Ken lay and ignore 500 odd congressional types
Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 9:33 pm

Hum.
Freedom Advancing
Choice in Investments
Energy Conservation
Disciplined Discretionary Spending
Ethical and Aggressive Medical Research
Who could be arguing against all of this?
Liberals.
The same people who try to convince others about how evil this country is acting. The same people who accuse others of doing things wrong without facts. The same people who accuse Bush of lying when he said the same things that Clinton, Gore and KERRY said.
In the debate of ideas, centrist/conservatives are winning.
One thing I wish we could add to the list…. is ….
Why should we allow illegal immigrants when this country allows more legal immigrants than all other countries combined?

Look for an angry, portly black woman not too far from the front rows. The one that looks constipated.
I think John “Cody” Adams looked more life like and upbeat in his recent photo-op.

Good speech, but I think about how this will sound to my coworkers - who are decent people but believe M. Moore’s lies. They’ll hate it.
That fat man’s got a lot to answer for.
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 10:02 pm
Was that a powerful moment ot what? WHen the mother of the soldier hugged the Iraqi woman?
WOW
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 10:02 pm
Wow…only an hour…
I know I’m young but I can remember these things going AT LEAST 90 minutes.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 10:02 pm
I predict that the left (DU, Kos, O-Dub) will have fits over the marine’s mother, and the purple fingers.
OK< that’s cheating. They had fits when the rumors of the fingers came out.
And now, he ended with ‘God Bless America’
Blood will pour out of their ears now…
Comment by SCSIwuzzy — 02.02.05 @ 10:03 pm
God Bless America!
Thank you, La Shawn, for hosting. It has been wonderful. You are a real treat.

Comment by The Baron — 02.02.05 @ 10:03 pm
Mike - 90 minutes - you’re thinking of Clinton. He’s the only one that waffled on that long.
Comment by Anemone — 02.02.05 @ 10:03 pm
They talked of the ultimate sacrifice. a soldier who died, his parents were there, he introduced them. They gave them a standing O and then the mother leaned down and hugged the Iraqi woman.
Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 10:04 pm
Ya’ll need to check out the Skeptical Optimist and his fisking of budget deficits, SS etc.
He’s got a bunch of glossy 8×10 color charts, but more’n likely the left will be too blind to see it

Comment by Renee — 02.02.05 @ 10:04 pm
SCSIWuzzy,
The left shouldn’t be up-in-arms about those parents.
Just like the right shouldn’t be up-in-arms about Lila Lipscomb’s reaction to her son’s death.
Both parties lost a child and both have the right to share their grief.
Comment by Mike M. — 02.02.05 @ 10:04 pm
I think on evcery issue Bush seemed moderate, made common sense and passed the compassion test.
The average American looking at this could probably find no wrong with his speech except for the stance that the War on Terror continues. But even that makes common sense. If only 3/4ths of Al Qaida leaders have been killed or captured then keep going.
Comment by Baklava — 02.02.05 @ 10:04 pm
Dan Rather sounds like they have a knife at the base of his spine… insisting that he behave himself.
And so far, no bizzare pseudo-homespun sayings.

Comment by Andy — 02.02.05 @ 10:06 pm
I watched the CSPAN net feed so I couldn’t make the House audience out too well.
Can somebody tell me: Did Kennedy, Kerry, Boxer, or Pelosi stand and applaud when the Iraqi woman and/or the Marine’s parents were introduced?
Comment by JoeEgo — 02.02.05 @ 10:06 pm
Yes Mike.
Clinton lasted 90 minutes and tried to tarnish the character of Republicans for 90 minutes while doing so. Fortunately for talk radio and the Internet Clinton’s bully pulpit and lies did not help him as it would’ve in a previous age with only CBS, NBC, and ABC.
GOOD NIGHT LA SHAWN !
