Update V: Nothing surprises me anymore.
———————————————————————————————-
I will appear on MSNBC’s “Connected Coast to Coast” today at 5:00 p.m. I’m in the first segment, I’m told. I’m blogging on a PDA again (Don’t ask), so I can’t link to the web site.
The topic is female security officers (see the Brian Nichols post). I’m also told there will be a security officer on with me (a woman, no doubt).
Other topics include whatever is hot in the blogosphere. I haven’t had a chance to much surfing today. E-mail me or leave a comment to this post, and your site may end up on TV today.
You may also live-comment here. I will see you all later tonight.
Update (4:30 p.m.): This all happened at the last minute, so pardon the typos and short post. I’m having cable modem issues at home again. I’m at the MSNBC building ready to go to (heavy) make-up. I’ll never get used to that. Well, live-comment and have fun. I’ll post an after-report later. By the way, it’s going to be 2 on 1, the 1 being ME. They’ll have a female cop and a male criminologist. But I’m ready!
I suppose.
Update II (6:11 p.m.): I’m back home. I forgot to set my VCR and didn’t have time to tell many people about the show. I’m sure Political Teen will have the clip online, so follow his link in the comments.
I’m a little frustrated right now, so I’ll follow up with a report tomorrow. I didn’t get to speak as much as I wanted. On top that, my cable modem is out again. Get this: the cable guy forgot to set up the modem on Saturday, although I’ve been online up until this morning.
Whatever he didn’t do then came back to bite me today. I wanted to do a little research before the show. Instead, I was on the phone trying to find out why I couldn’t connect. They’re sending ANOTHER tech. On Wednesday. Very frustrating.
I’m blogging from a tiny Treo Smartphone. Better than nothing. I’ll see you all tomorrow. Your support means more than you know.
Update III (3/15): I haven’t seen the video yet, but here are a few thoughts. There were several things I wanted to mention on the show but didn’t get a chance. First, I had hoped to do some research on standard police procedures for escorting prisoners in general and in Fulton County specifically. When I got home the modem was out again, and it didn’t occur to me to sign up for a dial-up account, as I did this morning. I knew they’d have a female cop on, and I wanted to give not only my opinion, but solid facts.
Secondly, I wanted to emphasize and develop the “common sense” theme, the fact that the average man is taller and stronger than the average woman, different training standards for men and women, etc. This was the first time I was up against someone on TV or radio who disagreed with me. When the female cop (what was her name again?) interrupted me after she was allowed to speak freely, I had to contain my irritation. I don’t want to come off as a shrew or a shouting talking head.
Go to Political Teen to see Part I and Part II of the video.
See the post about my first MSNBC appearance, and check out LBC around the web: All the colors of the rainblog and Party On!
My “blog brother” and talk show veteran Michael King was on O’Reilly last night.
Update IV: I just saw the video. Commenter Jennifer was correct: the lipstick was too shiny. But my hair was behaving.
Come on, I have to be a girl about it just a little bit.
Mistake: I said “politically correct” twice when I actually meant “politically incorrect“. Or vice versa. What was I thinking? I don’t know. I wasn’t nervous. Perhaps I was thrown off by the interruption. At first I couldn’t tell who was talking.

I gotta take a shot, right?
Very cool. Count me in.
Good luck, kiddo!
yay!
Good luck. I wish I was at home so I could watch…
Cool. I show up at your blog at 4:59. Just in time.
Good thing that DSL got fixed today, I guess.
You look great again
Woohooo…
here she is
I’ll have the video again
Hello woman…
He physically raped a woman…
what part of that are you mssing…
and stop interupting
Get her girl
Hmm,
Should they have had two, 5 foot tall women? Would that had made it better?? (since being a woman does not matter)
“Politically correct nonsense” – well done, LaShawn. I wish you could have seen Jewel William’s face on screen when you said that. I couldn’t have agreed with you more.
The first segment was pure ownage. I’m sure my neighbors thought I was nuts the way I was cheering La Shawn on.
I don’t know, I saw the guy and I was in the Army, I have been trained, but hey, I am sure he would have taken TWO of me down (and like La Shawn said…common sense tells me that… not the crap that I can do anything a man can… because we all know that’s bs
)
I like what that guy from Front Royal posted. That was dead on.
I guess it means they need to change the requirements…
i.e. more 6.2 male candidates?
Oh man, can I say that without being shot?
According to this la shawn, one incident is enough to change the rules so that what, no more female officers. What’s happening here is mob rule, and everyone is gung ho for action while failing to realize this was one unique event. It happened, it wasn’t planned. You want an officer bigger then the criminal, but someone’s always going to be bigger, someone’s always going to be stronger. So stop disgracing women’s ability, and judge this as an unfortunate event.
Very good La Shawn…
“Defies common sense”…
I am watching you on TV as I write.
I spent 8 years slowly working out what was a complete mystery to me at first: whether or not women could make good police officers — at least good patrol officers.
I talked to 25 male officers (w/o saying which way I was leaning when I began to lean), observed every female police action I could on the street and on TV reality shows. At an earlier time in my life I spent 15 years in New York City’s bad lands (which included visiting a lot of jails) so I have a some practical idea of what fighting crime takes.
My conclusion is that women do not reliably handle the 5% of the time that is 50% of the job — not saying they don’t ever: sometimes they might, sometimes might not. I did not want to reach this conclusion.
The federal judiciary who put them on the job should have said: EXPERIMENT. Women had every right to an experiment — as with the female fighter pilots. Judges had no business simply stating they were good.
one man’s opinion:
are you kidding? if this happens tomorrow is it just another incident? at what point do you question the wisdom of having guards who can be manhandled by prisoners? I’d say with one near dead small female guard you have passed that point. Women guards deserve better than this woman got. Yes, there is always someone bigger and badder. That is when you have 2, 3, or 4 guards or perhaps manacles and leg irons. You imply that this is a one-time event. Now that prisoners know it can be done they may be giving it some thought.
Good segment Lashawn. And if I may be allowed, your makeup did not look heavy.
I agree with you. It seems that common sense did not prevail regarding this incident. As a firearms instructor in the D.C. area, I instruct, and interact with law enforcement. All of the officers, male & female that I’ve worked with agree that you must PROJECT POWER in order to restrain and escort a prisoner under your care regardless if that person is 5′3,120 pound male OR female,or a 6′0 200 pound male OR female. This was simply not the case in this incident. A female corrections officer I spoke to over the weekend put it this way, ” It would be my job to escort him, but I would have demanded and received two of the biggest fellow officers I know to escort us. Size up your prisoner and prepare. Simple common sense.”
So then by your logic perhaps women aren’t capable of being officers. The fact is, this WAS a one time event, how long was this woman working as a deputy handling convicts? How long were you nto even aware of her existence. The fact is this was an incident, and of course it’s something we should learn from, but we shouldn’t create the concept that women aren’t “able” to be officers. By doing that, your just going against everything the women’s right movement set out to dispell. This was a mistake in procedure, not gender.
It will be interesting to see what the deputy herself says when she is recovered. My guess is that she will blame it on herself, not on procedure or gender or whatever. Remember, it’s women of all kinds who are behind the drive to do whatever a man can do.
Strong points…use of the phrase ‘common sense’. This really is THE point.
Weak point…injecting the phrase “politically correct” into the argument, which makes it a “liberal”<> “conservative” issue, which it is not.
Fulton County….hopelessly incompetent with a DA that left me speechless.
Other participants…woman from New York made good points focusing on fact that number of officers was the first mistake. But seemed a little like a know-it-all. Phrase “common sense” was a good antidote for her attitude. Prof. from John Jay explained issue quite clearly and had the most compassion in his voice. Ron Reagan…poser. Monica Crowley…much better on her own show than on other shows, where as a guest she spouts a lot of conservative rhetoric.
You did great, La Shawn!
You get better and more experienced each time you go on tv and I hope that Monica asks you back again.
BTW, the overall make up looked just fine, but the lipstick was a little too shiny for my taste. You want the focus to be on your eyes, and the shine was a little distracting. From one friend to another.
I’m so very proud of you, and I agree that this political correct nonsense needs to go away when the public’s safety is at risk. You were right on!
BTW, this was a mistake in gender because the man is a rapist. La Shawn is absolutely correct that he was emboldened when he saw the short FEMALE. Even your average tall Joe will try to intimidate women if it means they will get their way, and this guy was more than average on the mean side. If he’d been escorted by a man, he would have had more respect for him holding the gun. Just the fact that he took that one woman hostage gives you an idea of what he thinks about women. The common sense blogger was the correct one on the panel.
I really enjoy how you claim to understand what Brian Nichols thought when he saw the deputy. I really enjoy the common sense cliche, but the fact is common sense, isn’t so common and differs from person to person, so spare me. I also enjoy the irony that he was caught by a woman whom he did not harm in any way. And this, politically correct nonsense you all love so saying so much, is basically attempting to erase racial and gender stereotypes which have prevented many people from professions which weren’t, in the past, geared to them. Don’t confuse the fact that even if the deputy was an average male, nichols wouldn’t have done what he did. This man risked all to kill that judge, he didn’t flea right after overpowering the female deputy. This man was set out to do, exactly what he accomplished, female deputy or not.
The woman who eventually called 911 was kidnapped and then held hostage in her home (tied up for part of that time) was most certainly harmed. You might want to re-think your statement.
This video is proof that women should not handle potentially dangerous personals.

One Man’s Opinion:
You’re right. Women can do this job. However, in this instance 3 or 4 women were required. Or manacles. I don’t necessarily think it’s political correctness at fault. This situation was ignored or misread by the people in charge of security. There are better answers than a bigger guard. Even a larger man can be taken. You need an overwhelming advantage of numbers or shackles.
The woman was harmed? Yes she was tied up, but i don’t think she was harmed.
Here’s a quote
“He later freed her and the pair talked about her life and she read to him from the Bible, ultimately cooking him breakfast and persuading him to turn himself in, Mrs Smith said.
“I told him I was supposed to see my little girl the next morning at 10,” she added. “I asked him if I could go and he said no.” ”

What happened to that woman was a crime and you can be sure it will be part of the many charges against him. I’m quite sure that she was terrorized. It just so happened that she was an extraordinary person who, with the help of God, was able to find a way out of the situation. I would not want that to happen to me or any of my loved ones. Would you?
>>>”The fact is, this WAS a one time event, how long was this woman working as a deputy handling convicts?”
What makes you think this is a one time event? My uncle is a detective in Minneapolis, and during his squad car days he told me a story about a female officer being chased around a bus stop shelter by an angry junkie. He seemed to accept it as a given fact that women are going to be officers in today’s society, but he didn’t sound too impressed.
LaShawn,
Any link to audio or video/audio of MSNBC? Checked web of MSNBC and found nothing.
Have gained knowledge of cable modem. I can fix better than telephone help of Comcast unless power surge blows physical modem. Most computer problems are hard disk problems.
This is Albert Einstein’s birthday. In 1905 the Bern patent examiner brought forth three different theories including special relativity. He never won Nobel Prize for Special Relativity even though it was proved in all aspects by his death in 1955.
The photoelectric effect resulted in the TV tube.
How anyone the link to Political Teen?

“This man was set out to do, exactly what he accomplished, female deputy or not.”
You should consider changing your user name to ‘One Opinioned Man’. How long did it take the concrete to set?
One Man’s Opinion: She wasn’t harmed? She was kidnapped at gunpoint and tied up for starters and dealt with the possibility that she might be killed leaving her daughter an orphan. Thank goodness this the opinion of only one man.
Hey La Shawn,
Michael King is on O’Reilly.
Sorry, they just finished the segment (but it will beon at 11 again).
Regarding your computer connection issues. Find out if your cable company also provides dial-up, and if they do set it up for backup purposes just in case the cable modem goes bad, or some other problem occurs. Also get a good Backup Power Supply, APC makes some good choices for home, they prevent power surges, and allow you to finish blogging during power outages.
One Man’s Opinion,
Why the vitriol? We all agree that the first problem was the number of deputees. The second was the physical disparity between the two participants. La Shawn feels that females should not have been used at all for this reason. Her opinion on this shouldn’t be the primary discussion. I would think that there should have been 3-4 with at least 1 not being cut from the mold of Barney Fife. I think we all agree that Fulton County had major procedural problems that cost 4 good people their lives and that only the compassion of a good Christian woman kept it from being worse.
Two for one!
I was on O’Reilly this evening on fallout from the Nichols story here in Atlanta…
I missed you, but I’m sure you did well!
La Shawn came across very well. I’d never seen or heard her before. But I’m very concerned that she is being typecast as a black, female conservative and that being the case, is being brought on as Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and a few others for partly entertainment purposes. Everyone knows what those two ladies are going to say before they come on. They’re paired with liberals, who have the same kind of personalities with opposite points of views. Few really know that much about Coulters views. They’re attracted by a long-haired blonde(?) who says outrageous things. She appeals to me about as much as Carville. I never learn anything from those shows. I just turn the channel.
La Shawn did not come off that way at all. But I wonder if she would get a sniff if she was white or a black liberal. I would really like to see her on PBS or C-Span, where she could be in a discussion with others in which political rhetoric would be sternly dealt with so
serious discussions could be held in substantive ways. I think she’d be gangbusters and it would expand her career.
When cops make a field arrest, there are always at least 2, and they cuff everyone, or at least everyone who might be in the slightest considered dangerous or a flight risk.
At a more “sexist” level, I don’t believe women on average are able to think in a way which evalutes the possible tactics and threat of a captive, a warring enemy, or a cornered prey. It’s always a life or death situation – which evolution has largely excluded women from having to deal with. The mind is not a “blank slate”.
LaShawn–when your computer konks out, you should go to a friend’s house or the library or an internet cafe. Or, if you have an Apple store where you live, you can go there for free internet access.
I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you on MSNBC this evening. As for your cable connection. You might want to purchase PDANet for your Treo. It will allow you to connect to the internet using your Treo as a modem. Good for those rare time the cable modem is down or when you’re on the road and wireless is not available.
La Shawn,
You look better every time you are on TV! As Indigo Insights is quoted as saying, “too cute to be staying indoors blogging”.
Now this is a subject of which I have a great deal of experience, knowledge, and strong opinions about. I will Email you with what I have to say about it, as it will take too much room for comments. Let me just say up front that you are much closer to the truth about law enforcement than the NY State Courts Officer, who was obviously more interested in preserving political correcteness.
Of course, she outlined NYSCPD’s procedures, which are similar to those most departments follow, and which would have compensated for the physical disparity between the injured officer and Nichols, but she avoided addressing the issue at hand, which was gender and the question of physical size and strength disparity between officers and suspects.
You did very well. “If I could continue UNinterrupted…” Priceless.
We knew exactly what you were talking about. I was cheering, anyway…
Er- that doesn’t read quite the way I typed it, oh well.
one man’s opinion,
I recently took an online test regarding easily confused words. You should try it (I linked to it from “Queen of All Evil”). My comment on this is prompted by your use of the word “flea” (a parasitic insect) for the word “flee” (to run away).
La Shawn I thought that you presented yourself very professionally. If you say you weren’t ready for the show, then I guess your female counter part doesn’t know anything.
La Shawn,
Bravo Zulu and Well Done! You did exceptionally well. As for the hair and lipstick…..looked perfect to me.
Just to give you a data point. In my last command we had two Petty Officers that were both over 6′ and pushing 230 each-with about 10% body fat. There were powerlifters and were built like the “demon dogs” from Ghostbusters. They escorted their shipmates to, during, and from Captain’s Mast (Non Judicial Punishment; AKA NJP). We NEVER had a problem with anyone to be sure. They were also great to go on Liberty with from Thailand to Spain. No one ever wanted to start a fight.
No one wants a 5′ tall, 50+ year old grandmother protecting you in a potential bar fight in a foreign port, much less protect you from a violent, kidnapping rapist.
Anyway, you did a great job and had your feet firmly planted in reality.
