Chris,

Its not a matter of moral relativism...its a matter of pure, cold, hard economics that's been the history of our country. When my Germans from Russia ancestors came here, they worked so hard in the cotton fields of OK and the sugar beet fields of NE and CO. But they moved on and didn't stay there because the work was too demanding and not economically rewarding. Mine moved to Lincoln, NE. One got a job as a janitor and the other worked for the Burlington. This is the course of history. You'll never get them or their grandkids or great-grandkids to go back and do that work. The U.S. got away with 250 years of slave labor in order to keep agricultural costs down. There followed share-cropping, etc. The Okies left OK for CA during the depression in a desperate attempt to find work in our fields. For a time, CA authorities stopped them at the border and turned them back because there were so many of them and not enough work. They were viewed as inferiors who would fill my state with tons of unemployed, ignorant, diseased, backward people and their undesirable children. But I will guarantee you that the Okies that got here don't work the fields anymore and neither do their descendants. They may own some of the farms in our Great Valley, but they don't do the work in the fields. CA produces half of the fruit and vegetables consumed in the U.S. and exports huge amounts around the world. The permanent peasantry of Mexican workers, legal and illegal, does all this work.
Our textile industry is gone because U.S. garment mfgs and retailers want to pay people in Cambodia, where I do work, 15 cents an hour and the Chinese perhaps even less. I'm convinced that some of them would go back to slave labor if they could get away with it. I know that some of the Chinese and Korean contractors would. In fact, considering that the slave masters had to take care of the slave children and old folks who couldn't work any more, 15 cents an hour might even be cheaper than our former slave system. Capitalism ALWAYS seeks the lowest cost of labor and the highest profit. We are seeing it work in its purest sense.

most everyone is generally loathe to turn in a relative for breaking the law. what i am trying to illustrate is that many people carry the same attitude, which is that as long as "my relative/friend is a good person, doesn't commit crimes, works hard, and pays the bills then there is no problem with them being here illegally." that is what contributes to the problem. moral relativism corrupts the law, and our immigration policy has plenty of moral relativism.

Actus is wrongheaded on many levels, but I won't hold sticking up for a kinsman against him (although if I had her address, I'd call La Migra in a heartbeat).

We have a Republican Establishment that holds differing definitions of National Sovereignty, Cultural Integrity, and Secure Borders -- That The Democrat Establishment does so we've known long ago. Even Eisenhower, a weak conservative at the time, implemented "Operation Wetback". We can listen to Rep. Tancredo, or we can be in trouble. That Mr. Tancredo is 'persona non grata' at the White House speaks volumes.

actus,
you possess direct knowledge of someone doing something illegal and are willing to sit aside and let it happen, just as everyone else who is content for illegal aliens to be here. you can call it snitching, ratting out, or whatever, but we will continue to have a problem until everyone agrees that this is important enough to stop. even though your cousin isn't a muslim terrorist, she contributes to the overall problem. she is breaking the law, and so are you if you offer her any financial or material support.

Bush hasn't changed--he's NEVER cared about illegal immigration. He comes from a border state where the farmers need illegal workers, he's got plenty of friends and constituents who use illegal workers for their businesses, and he's buddies with Vincente Fox.

This is what Bush said about illegal aliens: "Hell, if they'll walk across Big Bend, we want 'em."

That quote comes from the book "The Right Nation."

"so actus, by admission, are you helping harbor an illegal alien? "

How do I harbor her?

"That makes you just as much a part of the problem."

Certainly not the security problem. She's not a muslim terrorist.

Here's the link to the Fox News story about the state of Yucatan, which puts out a handbook on how to legally get into the United States, but if that doesn't work then get across illegally. The majority of the book is a guide on how to get across and utilize the US social services while sending all the money home to Mexico.

Of course, this is totally self serving for Mexico's government elite to profilgate their elitism while doing nothing to solve the problems their country faces. Disgusting.

Actus,
That makes you just as much a part of the problem. Even if it is "family" issue. Any aid you give to your cousin is a violation of the law!!!

I'm sure you've heard it already, but the IRS has a list of companies that submit names with non-matching SSN's on a regular basis. They could impose several million dollars in fines, or bring the matter to DHS/INS, but they don't, because "their job" is getting the money, and they're afraid that if they start reporting people that the companies will just stop witholding any income. Right now, if the companies want to stay out of trouble, you know what they have to do? Ask the employee in question again, and submit a new name/SSN pair. And if that's a lie, try again. And again.

Wow!...the containers...I'd almost forgot about them but that is another serious lapse in security. Kerry was right...only about 5% are being inspected. We are in serious trouble.

Just saw the President speak at his conference with Fox, etc. Unbelievable double-speak. Says that his plan will help control the borders and keep smugglers, drug runners and terrorists out. How for Heaven's sake if he won't put troops at the border?
