Life Offline

by La Shawn on April 5, 2005

in Me, Me, Me

One of my “fans” e-mailed the other day to say I talked about myself too much. I was very proud of myself for not sending him a sarcastic answer. I hope he’s not reading this post because since I’m so me-oriented, I’m going to talk about myself some more.

Now about me. Real life, life offline, is kicking me in the pants. I’m working only half days at my day job, but the extra time I thought I’d have is quickly filling up. Blogging has taken a back seat, I’m sad to say. That will change in the next couple of weeks, I anticipate. I don’t know what happened over my 2-day blogging break, but the desire to keep up with everyone else, chase the link and obsess over traffic has dissipated somewhat. It’s probably just a phase, but I have a confession: I like the feeling.

I have a big Minuteman Project update post planned, as well as other happenings in the illegal alien arena. For instance, VA Governor Mark Warner just signed legislation denying public benefits, welfare, to illegal aliens. The post will also include links to other bloggers, so e-mail me if you’re blogging about this topic.

To my loyal readers and friends, thanks for hanging in there with me. Regular blogging will resume shortly. :)

Update: I think having photos of myself on the blog gives people a false sense of intimacy and familiarity. People begin to feel that they know me and can say anything to me. Positive comments are fine, but negative ones tend to cross the you-don’t-know-me-like-that line. I may remove them, experimentally at first, to see if anything changes.

La Shawn,

I’ve found the happy medium in talking about myself and more important affairs on my site.

I’ve actually received compliments from some of my readers for offering up something more diverse than simple political rants.

And you should be commended for the same. I like reading your posts when you describe what’s going on in your life. Many people say it’s too “LiveJournal”-ish, but I disagree.

I suppose it’s all about finding that happy medium. But, just for validation (which you certainly don’t need), I don’t think you talk too much about yourself at all.

Cynthia 04.05.05 at 12:21 pm

To me when you have a blog, especially one with your name on it, at times, you will talk about yourself. I don’t know how one will define too much talking about yourself, or better yet, how another person can have the nerves to tell someone else that they are talking too much about themselves on their own blog. Even if they don’t agree with what you do, it is your space to do what you want.

Janna 04.05.05 at 12:32 pm

Yeah… what Cynthia said. :) La Shawn, you can talk about yourself all you want! We’ll still love you and we’ll still keep reading. :)

Chrystal Cain 04.05.05 at 12:53 pm

Sometimes it’s just nice to get away from the politics of it all and find a fresh new prospective. I hope you weren’t annoyed with my comment yesterday. …But I understand how that can be. Hope all continues to go well with you.

Ambra Nykol 04.05.05 at 12:57 pm

I’m so there with you.

Evon Bachaus 04.05.05 at 12:58 pm

I did miss reading something new from you. Take care of yourself first. Evon

ditto with Chrystal

LaShawn,

The way I see it, if you were a paid professional journalist and you failed to do your job properly (as most of them seem to do these days), then I’d have a beef.

But it so happens that you still have to work a real job. That’s the first difference between you and the professional journalists; the second, of course, is that your writing is much better.

So I’ll be continuing to check the Corner for your latest, and continuing to not buy newspapers or watch MSM.

Excepting, of course, when YOU are on MSM.

God bless
Dave

It seems to me that a blog called “La Shawn Barber’s Corner” is going to have some personal stuff in it.

Speaking for myself, I sort of enjoy those blogs that interject moderate doses of personal data. I think its part of the value of blogs–the disclosure of perspective and experience.

So much of “news” is about personal, subjective perceptions and reactions. Knowing that La Shawn is a black woman, unmarried, having overcome substance abuse issues gives her special authority that I would seek out on some subjects.

Sometimes we get obsessed (to varying degrees) when we repeat the same process day in, and day out, for long periods of time. It’s all a “forest for the trees” kinda thing, y’know?

Anyway, take some time to enjoy the coming of spring, get away from the computer for a bit, and relax. It’s all good.

As to posting the personal stuff, I appreciate that you do write about it. Understanding the person who does the writing leads to a better understanding of what they are writing about.

So enjoy the fresh air, the green grass, and the torrential rains which will no doubt catch you at an inconvenient moment… :-)

La Shawn
It is your web site so you can do whatever you want to. If someone has a problem they can start their own site or switch the channel. Saw you on the Monica Crowley show and you are a well spoken fine looking Christian woman. Amen!

Lornkanaga 04.05.05 at 7:00 pm

“Gee, sorry to see you go. It was nice having you for a reader!”

Sheesh. Freedom means reading what you want, when you want. It also means writing what you want, when you want. Change the channel, try another station, buy a different paper.

Freedom means having the world, and independence means not needing the whole planet to conform to your every whim.

I think the world of you LaShawn, as you are.

Chris Roberts 04.05.05 at 7:00 pm

LB-
The talking about yourself lends a lot more credibility to your posts than a lot of stories in MSM. MSM reporters inject their personal opinions into every story but want us to believe they are unbiased and without personal agendas. Knowing more about you gives us the reader better perspective to why you would inject certain opinions into a story, and it is more genuine.

Mark La Roi 04.05.05 at 7:11 pm

La Shawn,

as much as I enjoy reading your work here, you and I both know that the best place in the world is to be where God wants you to be. I think it was Def Leppard who sang “It’s better to burn out than fade away.” Well, neither is good. Withdrawing when needed is a literal life saver.

Work hard, play hard, rest well.

Do His thing sister, wherever that takes you!

Glamchild 04.05.05 at 7:30 pm

LaShawn: Don’t compete with anyone else….but yourself. You set your own goals. Don’t let other people, fans, readers etc. dictate your moves. Stand your ground. You can’t let other people throw you off track. I’m surprised you even have a “comments” section.

Why should you spend precious writing/research time being a babysitter/cop?

If you have to shut down the comments section, please don’t hesitate. I’ll live.

I’ll still be a loyal reader.

And, you’ll have more time to do what you do best.

I always thought comments were supposed to be a privilege.

If a few, or a lot, of readers are abusing that privilege, and throwing you off-track….we all lose out!

Alli 04.05.05 at 7:51 pm

Take it easy, La Shawn, burning yourself out is no fun. I love reading here, but I don’t want your blogging to affect your real life. I’ll pray that you find that balance so that you can still have a life and a blog. :)

On the other hand, is anyone else a little annoyed that we need legislation that says ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS can’t have the benefits of citizenship? I’m still completely floored by this. One of my profs the other day said this (I’m quoting, too), “I don’t think undocumented residents [liberal-ese for illegal immigrants] have don’t anything wrong”. *growl* /rant

Erbo 04.05.05 at 8:32 pm

I echo the above comments. Sing your own song, La Shawn, tell your own tale. And, in the words of Sandra Boynton (as printed on one of my coffee mugs), “Don’t let the turkeys get you down.”

Rafael Daniel 04.05.05 at 8:57 pm

You are a Mover and a Shaker. That is a GREAT thing. However, since you buck inertia, there is a price to pay. You are MORE than well-equipped to handle it, seeing as you are MORE than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. If I may be so bold to suggest you do anything, it would be to remember to CAST your care. Your faithfulness will carry you through, because once activitated in His Name, you won’t be operating in self. You will be operating in His authority, with His ability. THAT is major-league stuff! That is why I know you will prosper, even though I don’t know you personally. Peace.

Ralph 04.05.05 at 9:10 pm

Please, keep the photo. It is your greeting. That countenance of yours shows peace, joy, toughness and resiliency.

If I was a kid selling cookies door to door in my neighborhood, and everyone that opened their door had that expression on their face, I’d be knocking on doors and trying to sell cookies all day long.

My three favorite women in this world are my wife, Michelle Malkin, LaShawn Barber, not necessarily always in that order.

We have no control over anything in life except the way in which we react to the world around us. You and Michelle (and some others) exhibit that character trait and that is why I read you regularly (and also why I listen to my wife). You tough it out through the attacks and remain unaffected by the praise. What remains is your well-articulated, unashamed, this-is-my-opinion-right-or-wrong, and that is what we seek.

Keep writing, discontinue comments, kill-filter email, and have a glass of red wine with dinner every night.

CharlyG 04.05.05 at 11:59 pm

I was disappointed to not be able to comment on her most recent post, so I linked up to it and anyone is welcome to comment over there. I was moved by her description of what happened via email after her post on the Pope’s death. As far as this topic, don’t listen to the naysayers. There are way more of us that love you and your style than those who nitpick!

I enjoy reading your blog, whatever’s in it. Photo or not, you’re like a “friend.”

Dan 04.06.05 at 9:46 am

Two of the requirements for friendship are trust and transparency. You draw the first and seem to be the second.

Trust is based on Truth. Not relative-to-what truth, but I-can-trust-you truth. I get that kind of vibe from you via your writings. So I trust you.

Transparency… Well, you say, clearly, what you think and put forth, without apology, your values. That is risky as you well know. But it provides the transparency needed for friendship.

So friend, I wish circumstances were such that it were not so one-sided.

Curtis 04.06.05 at 12:08 pm

Talk about yourself! If folks don’t like it, tell them to talk to the person holding a gun to their head forcing them to read your blog.

RedBeard 04.06.05 at 12:43 pm

It really is bizarre to read comments on this blog from people determined to tell La Shawn how to run the place. I suppose a lot of it relates to some people having way too much time on their hands, often combined with a social interaction disorder. I wonder if those folks would presume to walk into La Shawn’s living room and immediately start rearranging her furniture.

As for me, I’d like to think I have mastered the common sense art of staying away from places I don’t like. There’s a saloon down the road that I peeked into once. The place was like Bob’s Country Bunker from The Blues Brothers, so I haven’t been back. I can only imagine the reaction I’d get by going back in there and suggesting that they switch the juke box to Barry Manilow and Michael Bolton tunes.

La Shawn, just continue doing what you want to do. It’s your house.

Don Giannatti 04.06.05 at 3:38 pm

Hi La Shawn. I read your blog daily. I read it because of you, your perspective and the way you blend personal experience with the commentary. Simply stay true to yourself and do it your way.

To the folks who seem to always want to tell us what they think we should do or be should simply work harder at being what they want to be. It is hard work doing what you do. It is so easy to criticize and devalue.

Keep it up La Shawn, your voice is getting stronger and that brings out the trolls. One of the negatives about the anonymous commenter is they have no soul, no shadow, no voice. Shame.

Cheers!

David L 04.06.05 at 4:05 pm

La Shawn, LBC is a moderately personal blog. I read plenty less personal and plenty more personal. LBC is in no way extreme.

Then it is your blog, and blog as you see fit. Your readers will of course read as they see fit. A free market of ideas.

The Anchoress 04.07.05 at 1:23 pm

LaShawn…this is why in my picture…my back is to the camera.

And, umm…the nun is not me, to begin with! :-)

Andy 04.07.05 at 10:36 pm

Hey La Shawn, how about dem Cherry Blossums out there on the Mall? :)

Rod Stanton 04.14.05 at 8:44 pm

Re Minuteman -
On Larry Elder’s show last night Larry said that the minutemen had reduced criminal immigration by 75%!. Or the rate of criminals crossing the border was only 25% of what it had been before the Minuteman Project! Sounds very positive!
