MSNBC – Thursday Blog Round-up

by La Shawn on April 7, 2005

in Interviews

Update: Originally posted yesterday. One subject on the agenda for today’s show is the Republican-authored Schiavo memo.

Update II (2:25 p.m.): Another topic — The possible elimination of the filibuster by the GOP. The language in this petition is a bit hysterical, but in a nutshell, it’s what liberals are talking about. On the conservative side, Hugh Hewitt and Power Line have blogged about this, but I want to give some press to smaller bloggers.

Have you blogged about the filibuster flap? It’s a very important issue. In fact, Senator Robert Byrd and the late Senator Strom Thurmond (when he was still a Democrat) both used it to block civil rights legislation back in the day. In 2005, Democrats will use it to block Bush’s judges.

Obligatory light-hearted topic: Star Wars fans lining up for tickets at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. One problem: The movie isn’t playing at Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

Update III (3:59 p.m.): I will appear in a later segment, around 5:40.

Update IV (6:09 p.m.): Didn’t like my performance. Can do much better. Will do much better. For some reason I keep looking at the computer screen, but I know this material. I can do it in my sleep. Why am I reading it? It isn’t because of nervousness. Just a bad habit, I suppose. The frowning is definitely a bad habit. My father does it the same way! But as real and as raw as I try to be on this blog, I have to be consistent and provide you with…the dreaded video.

How do I choose blogs for the MSNBC round-up? One thing I’m committed to doing is showcasing smaller and lesser known blogs. I like bloggers who put some work into their posts, too. Some of the blogs listed below may not be reflective of the criteria I just mentioned. My round-up style is still evolving. :)

GOP Memo

Right Wing Nut House – Great summary and round-up.

Crooks and Liars – This lefty blogger chastises conservative bloggers for the way they covered the memo scandal, and he even names me as a culprit. Fair-minded gal that I am (don’t quote me), I plugged his blog today. He makes some good points.

Senate Filibuster

Talk Left – Why not?

Confirm Them – Collaborative blog covering judicial confirmations.

Star Wars

On the camping-outside-the-wrong-theater story, I mentioned Downward Spiral and Tech Hawg . See this article in Variety.

————————————————————————————————————————-

I’m tentatively scheduled to appear on MSNBC’s Connected Coast to Coast tomorrow around 5:20 p.m. (most recent appearance) for another blog round-up. I’ll update this post with topics.

Guess which topic I plan to avoid like the plague…

The new Incredible Popeman action figure in Columbia? (Pope John Paul II is being reborn in a Colombian comic book as a superhero battling evil with an anti-Devil cape and special chastity pants.)

:)

See, here it comes. The Incredible Popeman’s sidekick will always get kidnapped, shot, burned, stabbed, tied up on railroad tracks, whatever.

I wonder if sidekicks have a hard time getting medical insurance. I bet they’d have to at least sign a waiver of some sort.

Dodo David 04.06.05 at 5:00 pm

The free Crabby Patties over at the blog Lifelike Pundits ( http://www.lifelikepundits.com )? You want the Crabby Patties all to yourself. ;)

Army NCO Guy 04.06.05 at 5:51 pm

The Black Death.

Oh, “avoid like the plague” is a figure of speech?

Rose 04.06.05 at 7:28 pm

The plague isn’t so bad :)

Just joking.

Ms. Barber:

Is that 5:20 ET today (i.e., Thursday)? Sorry to be so dense.

Yes, today at 5:20 p.m. EST. :)

steve 04.07.05 at 3:51 pm

the fake schiavo memo that you pushed last time? :)

Taylor 04.07.05 at 4:05 pm

For any newbies out there to the filibuster debate, I have a primer on the nuclear option on my site. It might help put the clear back into nuclear!

Renee 04.07.05 at 7:14 pm

I like the format of your segment La Shawn (3 topics…a comment on a right and a left blog… I think that works pretty good).

Walter E. Wallis 04.07.05 at 7:58 pm

since the original meaning of filibuster was to invade a foreign country with a private army, I propose we change the name to “DogintheMangering” to more accurately describe it. Anyway, Jimmy Stewart was probably Gay like all Boy’s Club folk.

Ms. Barber:

I managed to catch your segment on MSNBC and greatly enjoyed it…was concerned it’d been cut, or run early, since it didn’t start at the scheduled time. Great job, and don’t be so hard on yourself. There’s a saying…”The camera doesn’t blink!” It’s disconcerting to look directly into that glass lens and be completely at ease. We’re hardwired to respond to nonverbal feedback, and you don’t get it flying solo in front of the camera. Those who haven’t tried should do so…it’s a hairy experience the first couple of times. I, noticed you reading from the screen, but I see that all the time from the pros on cable news; I suggest that rather than not reading at all, you just glance at the screen. Forcing yourself to stare straight at the lens throughout the segment will feel unnatural and you’ll look uncomfortable. The screen gives you an acceptable reason to break eye contact with the lens (which helps you), without losing the collegial, conversational structure you’re seeking.

Looking forward to the next one…again, a very good job.

Sorry I missed your MSNBC appearance. I think it’s a mistake for the Senate to change the filibuster rules for this case. Republicans will need to use it when they are in the minority, and you must be in the majority to set the rules. Since you asked for shameless blog promotion, click the link to see my blog post on this.

Allan 04.08.05 at 11:33 pm

How about a No-Filibuster-On-Appointments rule? ‘Twould benefit (or hurt) both sides equally in the long run whereas discontinuing it altogether deprives the minority side of a powerful, but rarely used, weapon.
