The move opens the door to allowing homosexual “marriages” in the District.
30 years ago my parents moved into an all white neighborhood. My mom told me that a month after they moved in, she saw one moving van. The next month she saw two for sale signs. Upon the third black neighbor she noticed another two homes for sale around the corner. White flight. So did it make blacks go away? Did it make the “problem” cease? No. Did it allow for future rifts between communities because of the physical segregation which led to mental segregation. Whereas black people on tv or on the corner were or became the representative of all blacks in the mind of white people and vice versa.
To me, to love your neighbor in spite of is what Jesus taught us. I remember being taught in church that one cannot say he loves God who is someone he has not seen and not love his neighbor who he sees everyday.
My point…your… against gays and lesbians IS unfair, immoral, unjust and downright pathetic.
If you don’t believe in homosexuality or agree with it, fine. Don’t participate in a homosexual relationship. That usually works. But you have to see this MORE than a marriage thing and of a civil rights issue. Gay people pay taxes so why shouldn’t they receive equal rights?
Most gay people dont even want marriage, but what they do want is to be seen as equal. Same as my parents so many years ago. My parents were told that the bible didn’t agree with their union. Interracial coupling was against the teachings of God. They were told that they would produce mixed up and messed up children. They were told that people would never accept them and it would be easier to date and marry someone of their own race. It was unnatural. It was gross. It was just wrong and if God wanted us all to mix he would have said so! Those arguments are almost identical to the anti-gay arguments today, dont you think?
So move to another city and guess what…they’ll be gays there too! You believe in this war in Iraq to give freedoms to women, men and children there but you deny rights to people based upon who they have sex with. They are not worthy of your freedom or rights? That’s just down right hypocritical. Religion or no religion…marriage is not a sacred religious institution…it’s a government institution that’s failing at the moment. It’s so sacred that divorces are skyrocketing!
I’ve spoken long enough.

Candyce – Answer me this: Was Rock Hudson married? How about Freddie Mercury? Elton John? Seems to me these (gay) guys not only had but EXERCIZED ‘equal rights’ – by marrying a woman. SAME right every man in America has. And every woman in America can also get married – TO A MAN. Same (OR EQUAL) rights, as far as I can see.
Any other benefit “hetero-normative” couples enjoy can be set up through legal compact between two consenting parties. So, what’t the problem here? (Just kidding. I well know the “problem” is that all of American society doesn’t simply swoon and coo at the merest sight or mention of a gay couple. And it’s more than they can bear, apparently.)
“Stay out of my bedroom!” “Give me special recognition based on whom I invite into my bedroom!” Make up your minds, already…
“The move opens the door to allowing homosexual “marriages†in the District. ”
I don’t know if it opens the door to the closet. It does make it easier for homosexual families to live just like the rest of us, to access the many things things that we take for granted.
This is where the conservative spin comes in…Homosexual within homosexual relationships DO NOT have the same or are NO granted the same benefits enjoyed by heterosexual relationships even when legal contracts have been created. Please read below: HIGHLIGHTS: ‘BENEFITS OF MARRIAGE’
Georgia Amendment ONE:(which passed)
Recognition of Marriage. (A) This state shall recognize as marriage only the union of man and woman. Marriages between persons of the same sex are prohibited in this state. (B) No union between persons of the same sex shall be recognized by this state as entitled to the benefits of marriage. This state shall not give effect to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other state or jurisdiction respecting a relationships between persons of the same sex that is treated as a marriage under the laws of such other state or jurisdiction. The courts of this state shall have no jurisdiction to grant a divorce or separate maintenance with respect to any such relationship or otherwise to consider or rule on any of the parties’ respective rights arising as a result of or in connection with such relationship.
These ‘benefits of marraige’ may include:
1. Domestic partner benefits
2. Hospital visitation rights
3. Medical and financial powers of attorney
4. Adoption rights
5. Wills and inheritance rules
6. Survivor benefits
7. Parental rights
Are homosexuals asking for special recognition to treated like a person who can make healthy decisions for themselves and those they love?
Your point about Elton, Rock and the other dude is not really clear. Those men married women because of the pressures of society. Most gay men and women do marry and try to deny their true self. Our country honors marriage between men and woman no matter what the relationship is built on. Only qualifications are age and gender. That’s retarded.
Again, it’s not about marriage. It’s about equal rights.
Sorry – not buying it. Aside from “Domestic Partner Benefits” which is so vague (purposely so, I imagine) as to be nonsensical and adoption rights (left to the State by the 10th), everything on your list is possible via legal contract. HIPAA guarantees that I could name ANYONE I WISH to visit me in the hospital and that’s true for everyone. My best friend, (also married, straight and male) has named me as authority in his living directive. I can name MY BLOODY DOG as a beneficiary-in-trust in my will and on insurance policies…
Now, if you are saying that gays are too irresponsible to see to handling these things, I’ll leave that argument to you.
My point about the “gay dudes” is that they proved that EQUAL RIGHTS already exist: They were/are gay, and they got married. Perfect example of exercising the EQUAL RIGHTS which they are afforded.
What’s that? Don’t want to marry a woman? You want to marry a man? Gee, I can’t do that, why should you be granted SPECIAL RIGHTS in order to do that?
You want to change adoption laws, try that within your state. Don’t insist on changing a 5000 year old tradition to suit your narcissistic desires.
My GOD! How ever did gays survive up to this point?!?
Candyce, just so we’re clear that denying our “true self” involves denying our sinful nature. If we all gave in to our true self, Sodm & Gomorrah would be a Sunday picnic.
Of course gays want to entertain their true self. Of course pedophiles want to entertain their true self. Ditto for murders, theives etc, etc and so forth. Socity has a right to demand that certain true self traits are to be censored.
People who compare the civil rights movement and the homosexual “rights” movement need to take a deep breath and get a grip. First, I somehow missed the history lesson where gays were enslaved and lawfully segregated for hundreds of years. Second, you’re comparing a superficial physical trait with willful sinful behavior. Third, if you won’t accept that God codemns homosexual behavior, then look at it from an evolutionary standpoint, if you believe in that kind of thing. Persons of different races can have offspring, probably more healthy ones because of the increase of variety in the gene pool. Natural selection says that is good. Homosexuals cannot procreate – oops! No natural benefit, that means left to their own devices they would become extinct. Anyway you want to look at it, gay marriage doesn’t make a lick of sense.
LaShawn – I’d love to see you join us in Virginia, but I hope you can stand the traffic!

Actus referenced “homosexual families.” That’s not an entity, but an oxymoron. I do wish the left would stop trying to redefine the English language.
