That’s what liberal firebrand Maxine Waters, Queen of the Congressional Black Caucus, said at a House Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims hearing last week, according to frequent immigration writer and blogger Heather Mac Donald, who testified before the subcommittee. She writes:
Enter Maxine Waters. Waters has poisoned racial politics in Los Angeles for years; she essentially declared the Los Angeles riots a strike against racial injustice. Never saw a cop she doesn’t think is a racist. Yet here she was at the hearing declaring herself absolutely fed up with the race war between Hispanics and blacks that is raging on the streets of downtown L.A. “Why isn’t anyone talking about the Mexican Mafia (a gang of illegal Mexicans that controls the California prison system)?†she thundered. ‘I don’t care if you’re pink or purple or white or black or brown, I want you out if you’re committing crimes.’ There is no excuse not to control the border, she said. ‘I’m a liberal with a capital ‘L’,’ she said, ‘but I’m sick of it. (Source)
Waters is finally doing some tough talking for the right side…for a change. During Bill Clinton’s impeachment, she was fit to be tied that her guy’s “private” sexual affair was being discussed in front of the whole world. Waters had an attitude problem every day of the hearings. One of her many quips to Henry Hyde, Chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary:
“Mr. Chairman, I don’t want you to default on your good name and leadership. History will not be kind to you and the stark contradictions of your leadership. It would surely be a sad commentary on your long years of service to be regarded as one who led the selective impeachment of the president of the United States, not based on a consistent philosophical belief, but rather on a petty, partisan need to satisfy; the need to retaliate, embarrass or feed the insatiable appetites of a group of hate-mongering, right-wing anarchists who will stop at nothing to destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton.” (Source)
Lots of inconsistencies and errors in that blurb, but I’ll let you pick it apart. The point is that no matter how liberal people may be, everyone has a limit to what they’ll tolerate, and foreign criminals fighting in her district must be hers.
Waters had better be careful with all that “control the border” talk, though. Her liberal friends might accuse her of being a “hate-mongering, right-wing anarchist who will stop at nothing to destroy” America’s wide open borders.
(Take it, Michelle!)
Update: AgJobs provision fails in the Senate. For now.
Six hundred and fifty new border agents are headed south:
The move is a rebuke of President Bush, who signed a bill last year calling for 2,000 new Border Patrol agents each year for five years, as well as increases in the other areas, but submitted a budget calling for only 210 new agents and far fewer detention beds.
“We ask how and why illegal aliens continue to pour into our country, and the answer lies in every Border Patrol increase we do not fund, every agent we do not hire and every illegal alien we release due to lack of detention space,” Mr. Byrd said.
Byrd shares his colleague’s frustration. It’s encouraging to know that liberals are becoming fed up over this national security threat, too.

Like Danny Glover in “Predator 2″, Maxine Waters has discovered that “THERE’S A NEW PLAYER IN TOWN”.
The “new player” are Mexicans. They are moving into territory that she believes belongs to her - and they don’t even know she exists.
This is the worst kind of distress for a self-indulgent “queen of the mountian” like Waters - to be totally ignored.
Maxine is like Jane Fonda - an ageing diva who just can’t stop living in the 1960’s.

An election is coming up next year, La Shawn. Is this a true change of heart on Maxine Waters part, or another political promise to be forgotten as speedily as possible once the votes are counted? Watch her political spin doctors (the LA Times, the Washington Post, and the network media). If they remain silent or even praise her about this issue, then you can be sure the fix is in and no reform will take place.

Maxine Waters doesn’t care about Illegals coming across the southern border, she just wants to keep them out of her district so she wont lose votes. If people in her district move out because of violence and are replaced with an influx of Hispanics legal or not she might not be reelected every two years.

I do not think Waters is saying that for the same reason that some white people say it. I know that when I lived in the Dallas area, there was a local politician who was running on the issue of ‘brown people’ moving into ‘traditionally black neighborhoods’. He was quoted as saying something about seeing brown faces in his neighborhood and not liking it. Any thoughts on this, La Shawn?

I like Earl’s point. Especially when those moving could care less about politics and would be hostile to any outreach from any party. The Dems prayed for more votes via driver license registrations and ended up with anti-socials. Once again progressive ideology meets the brick wall of reality.

Wow. I don’t know what to say about that. I would’ve figured that her “compassion” that she thinks that she has and that Republicans don’t have would have her trying to pass legistlation to put water and food stations on the border.
Until I hear more though I can’t see her breaking ranks with the unity of the Democrat party … even on this ONE issue.

i am not letting the republicans off the hook, but liberals have caused/contributed generously to the problems of illegals and having them here. the aclu is sitting on the border watching for any possible “abuse.” maxine’s man, bill clinton, allowed thousands into the country without documents and security checks (so they’d vote for him of course.) many of the russian/eastern european mafia came in then along with other known and notorious criminals from around the world. liberals have indulged and enabled millions of illegals to attain services and privileges at great taxpayer expense in the name of “humanity and rights.” hillary is riding this horse for purely political reasons. how am i supposed to trust that maxine waters or her fellow liberals will now get tough and do meaningful and effective things to deal with the problem???? maxine and hillary are a whole lot about a very vulgar hypocrisy. they want it both ways. (actually, hillary wants it in what ever way the wind is blowing at the moment.)
Comment by bookjunkie — 04.21.05 @ 1:37 pm
Frank Zavisca, Mwalimu Daudi, Earl, and Repj suggest that Maxine Waters might have taken this stand for political reasons rather than out of sincere beliefs. This is unlikely.
Maxine Waters won the last election with 80% of the vote. She lives in a very safe district. She does not need to take stands she disagrees with in order to satisfy her voters. She does not need to worry about demographic changes in her district. An influx of 25,000 foreigners, or even 25,000 Republicans, into her district would not affect her electoral chances. Given her very safe district, the only reasonable conclusion is that she is speaking her mind, as she always does.
Redbeard, the whole point of politics is to win the hearts and minds of people who disagree with you — and to give them an honest opportunity to win your heart and mind.
Bookjunkie, whatevers reason President Clinton may have had to have a relaxed policy on undocumented workers, those reasons did not include an expectation that undocumented workers would vote for him. There is no evidence that non-citizens are illegally voting in U.S. elections in substantial numbers.
Also, it is a myth that illegal aliens are a net drain on government services. They pay into social security but will never draw benefits. They pay various other taxes and draw negligible benefits. There is a germ of truth to your point, and that is that their children in some cases are enrolled in local public schools, which puts a burden on the state and local government, while relatively little state and local tax is collected from them.
There are good reasons to oppose illegal immigration in general and undocumented workers taking jobs that could have gone to American citizens. But the purported reason that they take more government services than they pay for in taxes is not true. I know people are going to attack this point. Say what you want, I won’t take the bait.
Comment by Anomalocaris — 04.21.05 @ 2:46 pm
To Anomalocaris: For Maxine Waters, demagoguery is as natural and necessary to her as breathing. While she herself may not face serious challenge at the polls, other Democrats might. At any rate, given her sordid rhetoric in the past on race matters, what’s wrong with telling her to put up or shut up? For that matter, why not hold her fellow Democrats (and Republicans for that matter) accountable on this issue?
Comment by Mwalimu Daudi — 04.21.05 @ 3:33 pm

And Anom, generally they are using hospital resources without insurance (raising costs for those who pay), driving cars without insurance (raising rates for those who obey the law and obtain insurance), and using the prison system to the tune of 25%.
Prisons and you allowed for schools (education budget is approximately 50% of a state’s budget). Is there anymore Anom? I’m sure of it. Roads, WIC, AFDC, ….. I work at the Department of Health Services in CA and can tell you that over 300,000 people are receiving WIC benefits in CA. That’s just one program out of a hundred. You only allowed for the education system being in your comments.
Not to mention the environmental impact on many areas of the CA state and health impact and educational impact on the Citizen’s of this country who have to share classroom resources with non-citizens who put a drag on the learning progress in the classroom.
If you consider all of these factors, as I’m sure the 80% of Americans who are in favor of controlling our borders are probably considering, you’d have to change your myth assertion.

Did anyone even run against her ? 80% that sounds like the numbers Saddam used to get in his free elections.
And you say Maxine is doing this because she cares since when. According to Americans for better immigration Maxine gets an F for her efforts to improve immigration and that was April 15, 2005 and before that she managed a D-, yeah sounds like she really cares about illegal immigration.

There’s a very liberal politician in Chicago who’s from the ghetto, and she said something like, “why is the president of Mexico telling us how to run our city?” when Fox came to Chicago and told the Mayor to let illegals do this and that. I forgot her exact quote, but even though I disagree with her most of the time, she got it right. I think the problem is that there are unemployed, down-and-out Americans who aren’t given a chance or are “too expensive” for jobs, and they’re in Waters’ area, and she’s tired of seeing them passed up.
Maybe the conservatives who care about illegal immigration are being thrown under the bus for larger political gain: the latino vote. They figure they can sacrifice some conservatives for the more numerous latino voters.

Congresswoman Waters already has mexicans, guatemalans, hondurans, Salvadorans, etc. in her district. She represents Watts and part of South Los Angeles (which is still called South Central by us) that are increasingly becoming more Hisapanic by the day. She needs to be fed up with the illegal street vending in her district, illegal car lots and illegal businesses that have popped up in the district as I am fed up with them. As one of her constituents, I am confident that she is just fed up with local city officials not taking a harder stance. Let’s face it, illegal immigrants can’t vote anyway.
