Canada, land of open borders and multiculturalism, is wooing our illegal aliens. What a brilliant idea.
And convenient, too. On the same land mass as the good old USA, Canada is the perfect place for people who seek better living conditions but want to avoid the hassle of submitting to pesky laws against border jumping:
Mexicans can enter Canada just by showing a passport, much easier than the long, expensive process of getting U.S. visas. Canada also has a widely praised farmworker program and is aggressively courting foreign students. The country also has an easy-to-follow process for getting work permits that assigns points based on certain skills. The U.S. system is more subjective, with consular officials wielding the power to approve or reject applications without explanation.
Canada’s low birth rate, about 1.61 children per couple, means the country needs immigrants to maintain its population of 33 million, Rosenblatt said. The United States is holding steady at 2.08 children per couple.
On April 19, Canada said it would spend $58 million to speed citizenship applications and vowed to triple citizenship approvals for parents and grandparents of immigrants. While they’re waiting for citizenship, those people will get 5-year, multiple-entry visas to visit their children in Canada. (Source)
How very liberal of them! Incidentally, Canada has its own immigration laws, so are they planning to erase them from the books? From the Canadian government web site:
Canadá extiende una afectuosa bienvenida a los visitantes de todos los paÃses del mundo. Las personas….
Sorry about that! I forgot where I was for a minute there. Mon erreur!
Mexicans visiting Canada as tourists do not require visas. They however must satisfy the immigration authorities at the Port of Entry that they are bona fide temporary residents (tourists). U.S. citizens and resident aliens similarly need no visa if they seek entry as tourists.
Perhaps government officials in Canada know something we don’t. Uninsured illegal aliens are burdening the U.S. health care system, government schools, and the prison system, so why their presence is good for a country with a shrinking population (dwindling tax base?) is a mystery. But what do I know, anyway? I’m only an American.
Some Mexicans admit fleeing to Canada because they’re repelled by America’s illegal alien gang problem:
Family ties and easier entry aren’t the only reasons Mexicans choose Canada over the United States. Many visa applicants said they were attracted by Canada’s open spaces and lower crime rate.“I have family in Los Angeles and I’ve visited them there, but I don’t like the lifestyle that Mexicans live up there,” said Guillermo Rivas Zaldibar, 38. “A lot of those people are not very educated. It’s not exactly the best people we’re sending up there.”
Mr. Zaldibar misses the sweet irony dripping from his words. Someone ought to tell him that Canada’s liberal immigration policies will attract those same “not very educated” and criminal Mexicans he’s trying to get away from! Or maybe we should let him find out the hard way: on his own.
Other Mexicans simply do not like us. One guy says, “I find them very egotistical. There are a lot of historical problems between our countries. Canadians are much nicer; they appreciate other cultures.”
Well I certainly know what he means. Trying to preserve one’s heritage can be seen as egocentric and even racist. That is, it’s racist only when Americans try to preserve their heritage. Everyone else can display cultural pride, and the multiculti-goodness is celebrated before the sacred god of Diversity, but when those nasty, old Americans with their superior attitudes and high standard of living dare to preserve what is uniquely American…the snobs!
It’s funny how millions are jumping borders and stuffing themselves into hot, cramped trucks and boats just to be among “egotistical” Americans. Why would they want to come to a land full of self-centered xenophobes?
The masochists!

Very interesting. Just wait til their already broke social services breaks down completely from overload.
YOU TELL ‘EM LaShawn!!
I’m sick of having to be “sorry” to be American. When I’m not. I’m sick of having to learn a foreign language when I’m in my OWN COUNTRY.
They should be learning ENGLISH. They came here, after all.
Dan
You know I consider myself pretty tolerant, I really do. I’m from Texas, now living in Minnesota, and there are many parts of Hispanic culture that I’ve been fortunate to partake in, from the foods and Cinco De Mayo. My best friend growing up was a Hispanic young lady and I was invited to be in her 15th birthday celebration, which is a really bg deal in their culture, and considering I’m a black woman was a great honor for me.
However, an incident in my local Quizno’s gave me pause. Every worker in the store spoke little to no English and proceeded to screw up the orders of the 5 people in line with me. One man ahead of me was over charged because he kept saying he wanted a combo with a sandwich, chips and drink and they only charged him for a sandwich.
I kept wishing the folks spoke English, because they were clearly as frustrated as the people in line. And really they shouldn’t have been working there unless they had a command of the language because ultimately they will cause that business owner to lose customers, which makes them lose their jobs and I’m sure that’s not the intended effect at all.
I do see the need for restricting illegal immigration. Though I feel for people who want a new life, we can’t take care of the folks we currently have in this country. And that’s quite a shame.
LaShawn, wait till Canadians find out the illegals don’t like hockey.
So, the illegals that go to Quebec will learn French? The only thing I can figure out is that Canadian money already isn’t worth anything anymore, so they can give away their health services for free.
Great post. I’m sure Mexico doesn’t like non-Mexicans going there illegally. And what would they think if other nationalities waved their flags, spoke a non-Spanish language, and expected Mexicans to conform to their non-Mexican culture?
I’d like to say more about the quality of the people we get here (in reference to Zaldibar’s quote) but since I’m not Mexican, I “can’t.”
Has anyone ever thought of a Mexico boycott (at least as a tourist destination)?
The statement “live in Canada” is one of those statements that make you go “hmmmmm”…and then…silence.
“Uninsured illegal aliens are burdening the U.S. health care system, government schools, and the prison system, so why their presence is good for a country with a shrinking population (dwindling tax base?) is a mystery.”
because their presence grows the tax base.
How do you say Cinco de Mayo in French.
You say the say bad characters going to LA now also will be going to Canada. Not necessarily. Canada, like my home, Minnesota, benefits from this simple fact: cold weather helps keep the riff-raff out!
La Shawn you have given me my second good laugh of the morning.
Once the Canadian welfare and health systems (already on life support) have gone completely bust, the government will quietly and completely shut down all immigration from Central and South America. Of course, Canadian politicians will continue to demagogue against our “racist” system (that, rather than hockey, is Canada’s true favorite sport).
However, I am comforted by the fact that in the not-too-distant future Canada will be in chaos as Quebec tries to secede and form an independent Spanish-speaking country. The irony will be delicious!
La Shawn,
Perhaps we could have the Minutemen pick up the illegals at the Mexican/US border with buses, then drive them up to the US/Canadian border to drop them off. In the long run, it would probably be cheaper than having them settle in the US (in spite of the current price of gas). Just a thought…

haven’t they already stopped their patrols?

La Shawn Barber brings us the news that Canada is actually seeking to attract illegal immigrants to come on up from the U.S.! What’s sad is…
http://marklaroi.blogspot.com/2005/05/whats-goin-on.html
Let ‘em go to Canada. Less work for us, I say. Although I doubt we’ll see many of them on hockey teams. Or speaking French.
I must say, though, I misread one of the quotes first time around – instead of “Mexicans visiting Canada as tourists…”, I read “Mexicans visiting Canada as terrorists.” I didn’t catch myself for a moment – it seemed so natural.
La Shawn:
As a native of Buffalo NY, I don’t think the Mexican bandidos will find a place in Canada. The winters are too severe.
In June 2003, I went to a medical meeting in Montreal Que. It was sure strange seeing people of all colors speaking French.
We visited their public garden – truly awesome – but I was disappointed when the roses hadn’t bloomed yet; the winter was so severe that they were delayed – so much for global warming, and the Mexican invasion.
And look at the reality of being a thief – why would anyone steal a Canadian dollar when it’s only worth 70 cents American?
And there are not a lot of homeless in Canada – the weather in San Francisco is much nicer.
“but I was disappointed when the roses hadn’t bloomed yet; the winter was so severe that they were delayed – so much for global warming,”
this sort of comment is hilarious.
Miss O’Hara: Yes, because soooo many Mexicans are terrorists, right?
Lori,
I didn’t want to call Miss O’Hara on that because I thought maybe she was being funny. But, I agree with you. If anyone needs to be profiled it’s the ones actually trying to blow us up.
The Mexicans are here for some cheap labor so they can send the money they make back to their families. I would hardly call them terrorists.
I’ve got a better idea: how about sending xenophobic jerks back to the countries their ancestors came from and then welcoming those people who want to come to this country to work hard and build a better life?
As a matter of fact, I thought it interesting that Canada has been advertising its tourism a lot more lately, t.v. spots, magazine ads and all. Starting to see a pattern here.
Go ahead and Woo away by all means.
Latinos/Latinas are here for more than just cheap labor. Hence the overrunning of California’s penal system with Hispanic criminals.
“Latinos/Latinas are here for more than just cheap labor. Hence the overrunning of California’s penal system with Hispanic criminals.”
Chris, why don’t you go back to Europe! This isn’t your country!
It won’t be long till Tequila replaces beer as Canada’s national alcoholic beverage.Beauty Ehh???
Nah, I’d rather stay here with my Latina wife.
Just pointing out that there is a significant element if illegals who are here to commit crime and not to find a job. Nothing else.
The facts do speak for themselves.
Besides, it’s my country just as much as anyone else whose family immigrated here LEGALLY.
“Besides, it’s my country just as much as anyone else whose family immigrated here LEGALLY.”
Those native visas were easy to get. Same with the spanish ones.
FOI, Actus, here’s how my family came over here:
Dad’s side during the mid 1800’s from Scotland.
Mom’s side during the Great Potato Famine.
As you well know, there were immigration policies in place at that time, hence we don’t have any claim to native visas.
My wife’s family had to go through the entire process of immigration, and I don’t recall mother in law stating that the spanish visa being easy to get either.
What’s with the retro-historical hate to justify something that is against the law anyways?
“As you well know, there were immigration policies in place at that time, hence we don’t have any claim to native visas.”
Certainly not. Somoene else took care of that problem.
Didn’t think I was discussing Native Americans, actus. My family history (well researched since one of my sister’s is a historian and I teach history) shows that our ancestors didn’t contribute to that issue, but I suppose that since I am white and of Anglo descent, I am supposed to carry my white man’s guilt with me. Once again, let me tie this up and get back to my original point:
Somehow my pointing out that a portion of illegals that cross come here to specifically commit criminal activities is being overlooked. Look at the crime statistics for Los Angeles County and my point is moot.
Because I make that point, I’m supposed to go back to Scotland or Ireland? Or feel guilty about the plight of Native Americans?
This isn’t a discussion about Spanish Colonialism, Manifest Destiny, the American West and the abuses that took place. This is about current immigration policies and their merits.
“Because I make that point, I’m supposed to go back to Scotland or Ireland? Or feel guilty about the plight of Native Americans?”
The significance has to do with when families and descendants are brought into the question. As soon as we open it up to go beyond legitimate persons to legitimate ancestry. Thats it.
If you want to go back several hundred years, why not go back thousands to when the indians first migrated here from Asia. Considering that Noah settled on unclaimed territory, we’re all immigrants at the root.
“Considering that Noah settled on unclaimed territory, we’re all immigrants at the root.”
Oh ya. I forgot about that dude. But lets not go back any further than 6000 years!
Only if that theory floats your boat.
My only concern is with those that break the law. Period. Which is what I wrote about in the first place.
You said: “A few months ago I complained that the same (white male) bloggers were being invited to do cable TV news interviews and speak at these conferences, then suddenly I was appearing on MSNBC and speaking at conferences.”
Now how come YOU can complain about white males, but white women can’t complain about white males at the Masters golf tournament?
White women can complain about whatever they want. I never said that anyone COULDN’T do anything. I just said it was stupid. And restricted private clubs are quite different from unofficially restricted public air waves. Learn the distinction, and mind your manners when you’re on my blog. – Admin
