Ron Silver is more of a disastisfied liberal than a conservative.
I saw an interview with him on Cspan not too long ago (but long enough too not remember the night) where he explained it was the intolerance of disent that made him leave the democrats and vote republican. One example he cited was abortion; he we pro-choice, but against partial birth abortions. Since he was only partially on board, he was labled as being anti-choice.
The happened when he expressed his ideas on defense. He found that when talking with republicans, he was aloud to speak his peice, more often then not. Disent was not shouted down. In short, he found a party that was a big tent, and subject to listening to the membership, not just certain elite thinkers and lobby groups.
Disagreement over abortion was the fisrt thing to drive a wedge between me and the dems as well. Like Silver, had disent been allowed, I may have stayed a democrat (or at least a bit longer). If the party changes, he says he may go back. I don't think they can change enough to bring me back to the fold at this point. :)

Dan,

Ron Silver is a pro-war, very hawkish Democrat who endorsed Bush because of the war on terror, but he is not a conservative, nor a Republican...
He has said that in his opinion, the war on terror trumps EVERY issue, so he supports Bush because he believes Bush is the best man to protect the U.S. But on every other issue, he is still a liberal Democrat (pro-union, pro-environment, pro-choice, pro-gay-rights, pro-stem-cell-research, etc.)

When he was asked what he labels himself, he mentions "revolutionary liberal" or "progressive conservative", but then quotes former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping: "I don't care if the cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice."

Another quote right before the election:
"On many social issues, if this president wins -- and I hope he does and I will try to help him -- on November 3 I'll be on the other side of the barricades when it comes to stem cell research, gay rights and other social issues."

I'm a liberal but I can add another one for ya, LaShawn: Ron Silver. He's been in the righty seat on Real Time w/ Bill Maher a few times. There are a hell of a lot more than you posted, actually. They just tend to keep quiet.

This thread is TRIVIA, remember? We're just engaging in trivial discussion about trivial people! No one is "validating" their beliefs via Hollywood!

Don't take it so seriously!

Shannon said:
"...vehemently against everything you believe in?"

Everything??!
I highly doubt that's true... as I said before, sure there are plenty of Republicans, but very very few CONSERVATIVE Republicans in Hollywood... so the majority of Hollywood GOP-ers probably agree with the liberals in Hollywood on a host of issues, especially social issues...

From what I've seen of the Hollywood GOP, they tend to be alot like California's Governor Auuunhuld, or NYC's former mayor Giuliani (sp?)...
or even the so-called "South Park Republicans"...
in other words, pro-guns, pro-business, pro-tax-cuts, law-n-order types, even pro-war... but still very liberal on things like choice on abortion, gay civil rights, stem-cell research, lax on drug war...

The only Hollywood Republicans who would have to really worry are ones who are socially conservative as well...

Hear, hear, RedBeard. Also, those Rep and Conservative performers need our support. I used to work in an office in which I was the only Christian and the only conservative and it was tough. Can you imagine your entire industry not just being liberal, but vehemently against everything you believe in?

Dignan, the point isn't that our beliefs need validation; it's simply refreshing to find a few folks with common sense among the legions of Hollywood knuckleheads.

I find this discussion very odd. This reminds me of when Christians find out that a celebrity has become a Christian, as if this validates something. It is obviously a good thing, but our beliefs don't need validation, especially from Hollywood.

I'm reminded of the strong friendship between Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda. Stewart was quite conservative, and Fonda was very liberal. The two of them would sit for hours together, building model airplanes and chatting, and they remained close personal friends until the end.

But then, that was back in the day when civility was a thing actually put to use, before Hollywood was fully co-opted by screamers such as Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Babs Streisand, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam.
