I have no problem discussing sanctions as a matter of foreign policy compared to other FP strategies. But to think sanctions were the only possible solution IS indeed sad.

The consequence is that SAs glossed over many injustices perpetrated by the ANC in order to elevate Nelson. Who invented the burning tire necklace? Did you forget the atrocities commited by Winnie on behalf of ANC?

Again, if there was no Mandela, who would SA pick to be their 1st non-white leader? Would ANC be the only political choice for SA?

As for the sanctions against white SA, I was against it and in hindsight, I’m still against it with regards to SA. It was nothing but a feel-good measure for the liberals just so they could be against Reagan and not on the merits, but that’s a whole new topic for suitable for this post.

In spite of all that, I celebrated the release of Mandela, right along with the world to the tune of Simple Minds’ Mandela Day (the song jams if you haven’t heard it – I don’t recall it being a hit here in the US except on Alternative Rock)

That’s what it’s all about, keeping it real and peeling back the fog of wishful memories.

I’m very troubled by Andy’s comment that he wishes Nelson Mandela had died on that island. That’s really evil to say in my opinion. Nelson Mandela helped push South Africa into the 21st century and helped in part to dismantle apartheid. Perhaps, Andy longs for the good old days where people like me chopped cotton under the supervision of an overseer.

That’s why I love comment boards, people become unmasked and let their true feelings show.
