I didn’t know journalist and blogger Steven Vincent, but I remember getting e-mails about him and his book, In the Red Zone: A Journey Into the Soul of Iraq. He was murdered in Iraq today. Vincent’s latest article was published on Sunday in the New York Times. Could it be related to his murder?
I didn’t take the time to get to know him, and now it’s too late. I didn’t even know he had a blog.
News: American Journalist Found Dead, US Journalist Killed in Iraq…
Bloggers: Malkin, Lorie Byrd, Captain’s Quarters, Arthur Chrenkoff, Power Line, Outside the Beltway, Mark Tapscott…
The Newseum has a memorial for journalists killed in the line of duty.
Update: Bryan Preston: “The thing about Steven that set him apart from most journalists in Iraq was his courage. He didn’t spend his time trading rumors in the green zone hotels. He actually went out into Iraq and explored it, trying to make sense of things. He didn’t go over there as some experienced Crocodile Dundee type, either.”
Jeff Harrell: “I got a copy of Steven’s book in the mail last winter. I read it in a day. I wrote a review, which led to an interview arranged by his publisher. Steven was a joy to talk to, a writer of consummate skill and a genuinely thoughtful man. We exchanged e-mails regularly after that, e-mails both serious and whimsical.”

He was a very brave man. RIP
This is so sad. I will write about it later on my blog. Was he a Christian by any chance?
Regarding Steven Vincent. He certainly was a very brave man whose writing I will miss. I’m just an ordinary citizen - no blog, nothing other than interest in winning what I will continue to refer to as the GWOT.
Based upon his July 31, 2005 posting to the NYT shouldn’t we consider the possibility that he was assassinated by the newly trained but clearly Shia-leaning Basra security forces?
La Shawn, I share your concern that he was targeted for murder. In the Middle East, free press is foreign.
He had a target for telling it like it is, both good and bad. The terrorists didn’t want the story that the Iraqi people are rising up and shedding their facist bondage to gain any further traction. They want to make sure the headlines are all about car bombs and soldiers dying.
Waiting to hear if Linda Foley declares that he was shot by American troops…
