Peter Jennings, 1938-2005

PJJournalist Peter Jennings, who announced four months ago that he had lung cancer, is dead.

From the AP:

“I will continue to do the broadcast,” he said, his voice husky, in a taped message that night. “On good days, my voice will not always be like this.”

But although Jennings occasionally came to the office between chemotherapy treatments, he never again appeared on the air.

“He knew that it was an uphill struggle. But he faced it with realism, courage, and a firm hope that he would be one of the fortunate ones,” Westin said. “In the end, he was not.”

Googlers are trying to find out if Jennings smoked. He said he quit 20 years ago but gave in to his weakness after September 11, 2001. Had it quit again sometime after that? Don’t know.

Very sudden. My condolences to his family.

When the news of his lung cancer diagnosis was first announced, I remember some analysts saying that though he quit once, he indeed started it up again until recently.

What recently means I have no idea, but I shouldn’t wonder if it’s until 2004. He started feeling truly ill during Christmas, I remember hearing.

I wrote a piece as soon as I heard the announcement, called In One Year.

The loss of Brokaw, Rather, and now Jennings is huge for the clubby world of MSM.

Nice blog, La Shawn. I came here via Instapundit’s blogroll. I shall definitely return.

Cheers,
Victoria

La Shawn:

Unfortunately, some of the same Leftists who blamed George Bush’s agressive attack in Afghanistan for Peter Jennings resuming smoking won’t let Jennings rest in peace.

Today, some NPR pundit said Jennings was the “most cultured” of the network anchors. They couldn’t resist a comment on the “superiority” of Canadian culture.

Perhaps these “experts” don’t think that a Texan like Dan Rather can be “cultured”.

And he didn’t even finish High School, Frank…

Being “educated” does not mean having a college degree of a MD or a Phd.

Many were self-educated, as Mr Perlmuter didn’t have a clue about when he attacked bloggers.

Peter Jennings was a Leftist, but he was educated – he educated himself.

The “media elite” love to preach the cultural superiority of Europe and Canada, but none of them have left the good old USA. Do I need to say more?

RIP Peter Jennings. Dying by lung cancer is a terrible way to go and seems to take a lot of people involved in TV and newspaper work [Murrow, Reasoner, and others]. I sat through the scolding he gave us American voters after the 1994 election and never tuned in to him again, although I did check into ABC news on weekends.

Not exactly what I meant, Frank…..

Generally (in my view) they wax poetic when a liberal pretty boy passes away, saying how wonderful, cultured and well liked he/she was.

If a conservative passes away, it would be “Mr. X died this morning of diseasex, he didn’t finish high school, but still got to his position. Survived by wife, etc etc etc”…..*shrug* They’d use the fact that he/she never finished high school as a bad thing, but don’t mention it for a wonderful liberal.

I wasn’t his biggest fan in the least, but I wouldn’t wish lung cancer on anyone (except maybe terrorists). I know the anti-cigs people will jump on this and use it politically, but he knew the dangers. I wish those anti-cigs activists would just let people be people.

I’m sorry when anyone passes away from such a dreaded disease. That being said his constant bias against Republicans and conservatives was well known by anyone who listened to him.His putdown of the American people who voted for Republicans in 1994 and his snide remarks about Pres Bush during 9-11 stand out. With Rather, Brokaw, and now Jennings leaving the stage it is a fitting symbol of the MSM losing it’s overpowering influence on the American people.Peter Jennings RIP, MSM RIP.

I wasn’t a fan of his, but who cares. I prayed for his salvation. Let’s hope that he’s in heaven right now.

It’s true that Mr. Jennings freely chose to smoke, thereby endangering his own health.

The ABC report last night said that he resumed smoking after 9/11. Who knows whether or not that made a difference in contracting the disease?

If it did, this is one more life lost to the Religion of Peace and its command to “…kill the unbelievers wherever you find them” (Qur’an 9:5).
