Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. - Mark 16:15

Tomorrow bloggers will unite in a hurricane relief day to blog and give to the charities of their choice. I’m asking my readers to donate to the Salvation Army. As you may know, the Salvation Army began as — and in many ways still is — a Christian organization. Read more of the history.

You don’t have to wait until Thursday to begin donating. You can donate money online here or send to PO BOX 4857 JACKSON, MS 39296-4857. You can also give clothing, food, and your time. Most of all, hurricane victims need your prayers.

[Note: A terminally bored and gnat-like reader keeps nagging e-mailing, asking me to “correct” the post. Send money, not food and clothing.]

Many bloggers have been tracking the storm and its aftermath for days. I had no idea things were this bad until martial law was declared. [Or has it?] As usual, lawlessness has broken out, and people are stealing food, clothing…and computers. See full coverage at Yahoo!.

The more well-known bloggers are tracking developments, and you know how to find them. This post will be a round-up of smaller bloggers, so if you’re blogging about the hurricane, trackback to this post, and I’ll include you in the round-up. (AP Photo)

  1. La Shawn:

As always, the most antisocial people require the most resources for Hurricaine recovery.

Many who did not take the effort to leave New Orleans on Sunday are still waiting for the Government to tell them what to do next.

There is no doubt that many did not have the resources to leave - the old, the sick - but like the dangers of smoking, the press and media has done a great job of warning people of the hazards of hurricaines.

Where were the “sensitive” Democrats who buy votes in New Orleans with their SUV’s to give rides to other Dems? Al Sharpton was in Texas speeding away from the Texas State Police; he could hav had a better photo op by giving some of New Orleans “poor” a ride.

Where were the buses that gave “the poor” a ride to the polls to vote for Dem Mary Landrieu for the Senate elections?

    Shameful

  2. My prayers are with the people of LA, AL and MI. Right now prayer to the one and only Lord and Savior to open the hearts and eyes of the people is greatly needed.

“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chron 7:14

I was dumbfounded by some of the lawlessness and looting (I mean, what are you going to do with a big screen tv in a city that has no water, no electricity and no food??) but then many verses of the scriptures came to mind that explained just how depraved and sinful we really are and just how far we will go on our own.

“Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. - Mark 16:15″

Is very fitting at this time (and is our great calling).

Now I have to agree with Frank ~ Where are Al and Jesse?

  3. Post-Katrina Evac, Looters, and Worldviews

CNN: looters and carjackings… even among ‘good’ people, some will do wrong if the situation provides a temptation too strong to resist… God has established human authorities to keep order and restrain evil.

  4. The amoral segment of our general society has inherited New Orleans for the time being and they are busy displaying the bankruptcy of their souls. I will pray for them, but I admit that in the spirit of triage, my prayers are directed more toward the safety of the victims rather than the conversion of the heathen.

The location of New Orleans has always been a physical demonstration of tempting the hand of fate. Great sums have been spent to continue the ruse that the mind of man is mightier than the mood of nature. I agree with bloggers who are suggesting that rebuilding the city “in situ” be discouraged.

When I think of all the money we have put into cleaning up birds and critters after an oil spill and the blame-game screaming that goes along with it, I shudder to think how much chemical waste and petroleum is leeching into the flood waters and will continue to bubble up for months or more.

I wonder why the refugees in the Super Dome are not evacuated to a military base where they can be tended to in an orderly, efficient and healthful manner.

Finally, I hope the mayors will put full martial law into effect in their devastated cities. The looters should be rounded up and penned up together so they can prey on each other until order can be restored.

In the end, much will be accomplished by the men and women of good will who will go about the business of donating their time and skills in the spirit of the kindness of strangers and in a quiet manner. In the meantime, the professional bureaucracies like the Red Cross will bicker, strut, primp and grab the spot light.

Donate to the Salvation Army, they are still humble servants of the Lord.

  5. Reports are that the national guard told the people to go ahead and get food. People have not eaten in 24 or 48 hours, imagine all the things you consume in a 24 hour period. Diapers, etc.

Some of it may be lawlessness, but you can bet those people shared that food with others who had not eaten.

—I’ve always been spooked by all that end-of-the-world stuff in the Book of Revelations. Someone before me, even, ripped out that part from my old, old, old King James Version.

I hope that something good can come from this hurricaine.

I am distressed when the Governors of 3 States and Our President promise to “help” rebuild these dangerous areas when the water is still rising.

The ONLY sensible thing to do is NOT to rebuild in these high-risk areas. To do so is to tempt the hand of God.

Many Asians have reconsidered their building codes following last year’s Tsunami. I hope Americans can do the same.

  11. Hi La Shawn - blogging for Katrina’s victims is very positive. Good on ya. But I do have to take issue with your comment “As you may know, the Salvation Army began as — and in many ways still is — a Christian organization.” What do you mean by that? The Sallies are not “in many ways” a Christian organisation: they simply are. I’m sure there’re as imperfect as any other branch of Christ’s church, and not everyone will agree with all of their theology, but the SA is much a part of that church as any group you can name.

  15. Looting

The word should go out; looters will be shot on sight. It’s one thing for people to take food and bottled water in an emergency like this; it’s quite another to take a case of Heineken or a TV set.

  16. What an ASTOUNDINGLY ignorant comment, Don. You can tell, just by looking at a person, whether or not they’re a Republican? Wow, nifty talent you’ve got there, though I fail to see how their political leanings matter one iota in light of the current situation down there.

While I agree that those taking non-essential items, such as TVs and computers, are STEALING, unless you yourself are going through what Katrina’s victims are going through, you can’t know what must be going through their minds as they resort to looting stores for necessities. Shame on you for suggesting that this is a partisan issue.

We should all spend less time *at this time* bickering over who should (or could) have done what, and when, and instead focus on how we can help.

Secondly, just because I disagree with you doesn’t automatically make me a bleeding heart liberal, although it apparently suits you to paint me as such. No problem. This is something I routinely encounter when I voice an opinion that differs from those who cannot stand to be challenged in any way.

And I still fail to see how it matters whether the looters are Republicans are Democrats. It makes no difference whatsoever, and should be the furthest thing from our minds at this time.

As far as your suggestion to move to France: utterly, mindblowingly ridiculous. I am an American, and proud of it. I shouldn’t have to leave my country to make you more comfortable, nor would I ever consider it.

“…I remembered Representative Sheila Jackson Lee’s recent comment that hurricane names were too ‘lily white.’ She recommended that the organization tasked to name hurricanes be more ‘inclusive’ of black names.

“…What could she have been thinking? That black children watching ‘Hurricane Denzel’ wreak havoc in their neighborhoods would gain higher self-esteem? That seeing a family member lost in a flood brought on by ‘Tropical Storm Tanisha’ would fill them with racial pride?”

I think that this catastrophe should be labeled what it truly is: a racist act, by a cruel white-named entity: Katrina. How dare she.

The Potter’s House (TD Jakes) and The COMPAQ Center (Joel Osteen) come to mind (but there are so many you can’t count them all) as perfect facilities to house, feed and take care of many.

I can’t think of a better use for those monster buildings.

  48. Unfortunately, many of the chronically poor develop an amoral philosophy, meaning they do not view things so much as right and wrong but in terms of advantage and immediate gratification. The looting in New Orleans and elsewhere is being carried out for the most part by those who know they have the advantage and the breakdown of civil (compulsive) order has left them with a city of “spoils.”

They will load up on liquor and hit the pharmacies, clinics and even hospitals for narcotics. They will amass guns and ammunition. And when they get tired and hopped up and finally challenged by authority, they will become dangerous.

This is the natural progression for those who are or believe themselves to be marginalized in a competitive society. Unfortunately, many of these people have been enabled in their “victim” status by those who whore for their votes.

It will not be long before the limousine liberals elevate this crowd to the position of “most devastated” and promise to open the spigots of tax money for their specific benefit.

In no way am I implying that there are some people who should be left out of the relief efforts. But I know there will be a natural tendency for politicians to court their votes. These are the very people who most respond to “circuses and bread.” Ask the Romans.

  53. brotherbrown, it appears to me that there are no rich folks looting Walmarts in the hurricane damaged areas, that it’s mostly poor people who either would not or could not get out. That being said, I seriously doubt that Jesus would be joining in the looting. Whether or not the poor are amoral, they’re in there stealing televisions and jewelry and guns. Food and water? I say take what you need because it’s a matter of survival, but they don’t NEED the jewelry or electronics, and the firearms are going to make things REALLY interesting in the days and weeks to come.

The Ambleside Online Advisory has created a free curriculum plan, AO-HELP,
for families and relief workers who need emergency educational help for
children in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. All books and materials
necessary are available online for free. It requires no materials other
than pencil and paper, and a Good Samaritan friend with access to a
computer and a printer. It is designed to be user-friendly, even for those
who have never taught, and suitable for a wide age range.

We offer AO-HELP in the hopes that it will fill a gap for the churches,
support groups and other organizations that suddenly need to set up
temporary schools for the evacuated children in their care who no longer
have schools to attend, and also for families who wish to continue
homeschooling during this crisis but do not have access to school materials.

We would also like to encourage churches and individuals to make copies of
the e-texts required for implementing AO-HELP for those without
