Here’s an idea:
Our government should act immediately to put these displaced Americans in the jobs now held by illegal aliens. Some 10 million illegal aliens are now working in our country, so there is no excuse for not replacing a million of them with unemployed American citizens.
President Bush should announce an immediate crackdown on employers of illegals and set up a hiring database to match up the unemployed with jobs. (Emphasis added) (Source)

One note of caution I might add to your excellent column is that citizens must be very cautious about any efforts to personally confront the “loiterers.”
While the police have not found a way to move them, if citizens are not careful, they will find that they have been drawn into a situation to which the police will respond.
Meanwhile, the letter swarm to government officials needs to be intensified. The officials react to growing numbers more than to what is said. Thus, don’t labor over the words, just keep firing off the letters.
There is a solution to the illegal problem.
Like the WPA in the 1930’s, “the poor” were recruited for large scale construction projects. Without welfare as we know it, “the poor” didn’t have a lot of options – they had to work to eat, and many learned a trade as well.
We have a ready-made opportunity for “the poor” to “lift themselves up” and work on construction projects in the Gulf States affected by Hurricaine Katrina.
This could include single mothers – they could carry their children into the fields, just as the Mexicans do.
Likewise, Mexicans of all legality could register, be fingerprinted and photographed and have a background check, and work as well. In fact, they would HAVE TO learn English, becasuse all documents would be in English.
By helpint in the reconstruction, they would be given priority in immigrating legally.
But with Mexicans and “the poor” becoming “Real Anmericans” – working, becoming independent in their thinking and economics – where would the “immigration advocates” be? They would be the ones who were unemployed, while the immigrants were laughing all the way to the bank.
I don’t see what the problem is. Immmigration is always a good thing. Only the socialists have a problem with it because it strains their Social sec. and medicare. they have to place quotas to slow down the process. What is not realized is population increase is good for the economy in captialist society because of demand for creation of jobs and production of goods. We should allow as many immigrants as possible not seek to remove them.

Not only is it “Illegal immigration”, but in terms of your argument, I would say I agree (in most of it) *IF* they come here to be Americans.
Don’t come here and expect whatever language you speak speaking teachers in public schools. Don’t tell me traditions in my family going back a couple hundred years are offensive.
Deal with it, or stay wherever it is you are.
I not really following you Dan. Immigration is simply very good thing. Language barriers are going to come about and language, on the whole, changes as a result of word borrowing an mixing. However you want to deal with the languages is not my concern. My point is only that we should not be so concerned about “illegal” immigrants “invading” our country. They only put a strain on socialist policies and demand the government submit to more free market ideas to accomodate the growing pop. Blocking borders such as stopping Cubans from swimming to shore is a great tragedy. Fine–register them, stamp them, whatever, but gladly take them in and welcome them. The same goes for Mexicans crossing the border. I say welcome them and let them have jobs and raise families here. Its good for all of us,providing more jobs, better performance in markets and greater consumption overall. That is all good. I leave it to you for how to register them. But at least take them into the country. We have been surrounded too much by socialists saying that this is a problem. Its only a problem for their ideology.

Those who think being soft on illegals is a kindness to them may also think that being soft on prostitution is a kindness to women.
Since these people pay thousands to coyotes to smuggle them across, I find it difficult to believe they would not pay a reasonable fee to the Mexican government to investigate them and certify them disease free and not a criminal.
I agree with you Chris. We could easily absorb a half billion immigrants from each of China and India. Then another billion, or so, from the rest of the world. Man our economy would really boom. Good times for all.

Garland, Texas built a day labor center for it’s migrants but failed to enforce the law at the drive-in. Now we have two centers for loitering.
Unfortunately, that’s not how the economy works. Labor markets are far too local and fragmented for that. Besides you would never convince someone that it makes since to live in California picking fruit for a wage that low with the cost of housing that high.
Perhaps we could consider simplifying and shortening the process of legal immigration.
I just emailed my senators to be against illegal immigration. But they’re so left wing, they won’t care.
