Hugh Hewitt Live

by La Shawn on October 14, 2005

in GodBlogCon, Pictures

hh5:55 p.m. (PT): Hugh Hewitt broadcast his show live from Biola University, and it was standing-room only. He interviewed a number of attendees, and I was supposed to be one of them. But I missed my queue. I was being interviewed by someone else at the time, so I’m only a little upset. :(

Lots of interviews. I did one for a documentary and may have one lined up for a journalist’s book. No, it’s not all about me; great conversations going on, and I’ll fill you in later.

7:48 p.m.: I’m blogging this from a panel moderated by Hugh Hewitt. Panelists are John Mark Reynolds, Mark Roberts (who wrote an article I referenced for one I’m writing), and Tom Bolsinger.

Charmaine Yoest is live-blogging. I arrived late; hanging out with the girls. Sarcasmagorical is also live-blogging (very detailed).

The panel is discussing some of the pitfalls of Christian blogging. How do you handle “fame”? All three are pastors, and they’re talking about blogging and accountability. Hugh is asking a series of questions. The most interesting: who shouldn’t blog? Answers: People with a lot of anger, perfectionists, narcissists, those who don’t allow give and take, those who care too much about what others think, people who don’t care about spelling and grammar (this got a lot of laughs, but it’s true!)…

They’re discussing whether pastors should be political. John Mark said he was de-linked by some Christian bloggers after he suggested that people shouldn’t vote for John Kerry (Weird, heh?). Make sure readers know whether you’re blogging for yourself or on behalf of your church or organization.

Most relevant: what is “God blogging?”

Dean Peters is funny. Wish he were here.

Hugh Hewitt! Wow! So many of the pseudo-sophisticates in the old media look upon the grunts in the trenches of the blogosphere as peons of the tenth order. It must be exhilarating to the nth degree to meet and talk with one of the denizens of Mount Olympus.

The difference between the MSM and the “new order” of the blogosphere is one of heart. The phony-bologna blogger is reduced to reading his/her own tripe. The phony-bologna MSM “journalist” is carried along by the rest of the MSM mediocrity on expense account journalism until they become too wrinkled to appear on camera without creative lighting and gel coated lenses.

Is Hewitt on the radio anywhere I live (Central Illinois) and more importantly, is he any good? My favorite talk show host is Milwaukee’s Mark Belling, along with Rush and Sean of course.

As a Unitarian, I wonder if God needs blogs or even cares about them. However,we humans obviously like them. They do allow the blogger to express his, or her, self and promote a philosophy or point of view. May God grant us the wisdom to separate the wheat from the chaff!

John in Illinois Hugh Hewitt is an optimistic, high energy radio talk show host who has tons of interesting regular guests. He kept conservative listeners from total depression after the discouraging early exit polls on election day 2004, kept listeners focused on helping rather than blaming after hurricane Katrina and is providing balanced analysis on the Miers nomination.

A couple of years ago my sister and I were listening to him after driving to the top of Pike’s Peak. He was dissecting an environmental study on polar bears reported in the LA Times. Since polar bears are big and dangerous and difficult to catch and tag, the study was done on brown bears and the results equated to polar bears. Hugh humorously picked apart the test results and had my sister and I laughing hysterically all the way from Colorado Springs to Denver. And, if it weren’t for Hugh, I might never have heard of the hapless toad.

My wish is that some day soon he’ll ask La Shawn to be a guest host on his show.

Hugh Hewitt seems to be the only conservative host who actually has discussions with his guests, even those with opposing views. He speaks in complete sentences with complete thoughts, instead of ranting conservative platitudes from talking points memos.

Hey, La Shawn, it’s good to see your photograph. You have a nice, honest face to match your blog.

I’ve tired of every conservative radio host I’ve listened to except Hugh Hewitt. I think it’s because, as Evon and MJ note, he has very interesting guests and has conversations with them. I’d never know what James Lileks and Mark Steyn sound like without his show, or realize how bright and witty they are in person as well as in print.

I think the other thing that makes Hugh’s programs interesting is that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He seems to be having a great time, joking with his callers and producer and others working with him. Call it sociability. He’s a very good debater, and has a breadth of experience that makes his ideas interesting and persuasive.

One think I really like about his show is that he reads his email during the program, which allows more than just those willing to sit and wait on hold to participate. He’s read several of my emails on the air.

I have to mention too that he single-handedly has turned me into a USC fan.

Thanks for the link and the kind words La Shawn.

I had originally volunteered to do one of the break-outs but but Dr. Andrew Jackson thought better of it.

Let’s hope they have the next one in D.C. Even though I don’t live there anymore, it’s just a hop-n-a-skip from Raleigh — well Apex.

Then again, if they’re going to do it in August, then perhaps someplace a bit more balmy like Buffalo. This would give our Canadian peeps a chance to show up in force.

Don’t worry, I think we could take’m in a fair fight.

Just thought this would be interesting…Often, I hear LaShawn criticized for having a predominantly white audience. I went through a recent thread jack about the conference on C-SPAN. The commentors on the blog were as follows:
22 self identified blacks
4 self identified whites (or I know them)
13 who could have been of any race…….

I have often been surprised at the knee jerk reaction of many who assume conservative blacks are playing to an audience of whites..and still in the plantation. On the contrary, LaShawn’s blog is racially diverse, and is NOT a white cheering section….

The facts do not support the theory..

GET EMPIRICAL..NOT HYSTERICAL….

La Shawn:
It was great meeting and riding the bus with you at GodBlogCon.

I thought that it was a terrific conference!

Blessings in Christ,

Oh, and to show that I am not completely biased against Christians, I give you the name of my favorite Christian—Bishop John Shelby Spong. Look him up. Read his books. Accept the challenge. He takes Christianity to a whole different level.

Oh NO! I’m so very sorry, La Shawn…I didn’t realize that you missed out on the interview with Hugh! :-( I feel absolutely terrible now. *sigh*

Well, if it’s any consolation at ALL I’ve told all my colleagues what a wonderful time I had chatting with you, how very fun it was, and how incredibly generous you were to chat as long as you did.

I shall now slink off, tail between my legs, head hanging low, for making you miss your queue! I was thinking someone was going to come back and get us in time and didn’t even watch the clock. I wish now that I had and had gotten you over to the library myself.

I owe you one!
Mel

PS Side note here…I loved the comments about who shouldn’t blog too. For some reason my fellow TOS folk all looked at me on the anger thing. Hmmmmmmm. Point taken. *grin*
