I’m writing this Monday evening, and it looks like Stanley “Tookie” Williams (see LaShawn Barber for a good summary of all this), will be executeed early in tomorrow morning. All the news coverage got me thinking about the death penalty.

“He who is without sin cast the first stone.” Tookie Smith said that he was a reformed man and a born-again christian. We did not know Tookie Smith personally, so therefore, it is not for us to judge this man. We only know what the media speaks of and makes him out to be. Everyone has the right to redemption, even if one did live a life of crime. But, society does have a way of judging people based on their past, even when they have reformed into role model citizens. Tookie Smith did not right those books just to pass time. He wrote those books from his heart, to help children and to hopefully prevent them from following into his footsteps. Tookie Smith has always maintained his innocence. He only wanted to have a new trial to hopefully clear his name.

All power comes from the barrel of a gun.
Whether that gun is in the hands of a Crip or a US soldier in Iraq.
I think 30,000 Iraqis have been killed since the invasion.
Not all legally.
There is no point to the death sentence. Reading the comments to this blog makes me weep for the human race.
Surely your god will judge us all in the end, and he won’t mind waiting a few years. You all seem far too eager to get there first.

Tookie got what he deserved for these heinous crimes.

I doubt he repented or even acknowledged Christ.
At least I never saw any evidence of that.

I think of the two thieves hanging with Jesus on His crucifixion day. One acknowledged his crimes and Christ and asked Him to remember him when He came to his kingdom. The other one mocked Him.

They both died for their crimes, but one went to paradise, the other to Hell.

It could have been that easy for Tookie.

There is nothing more important in life than knowing where you are going to spend eternity.

Thats a typo above. It should read:

“Outward appearances dont seem to indicate that Tookie was repentant.”

In other words, he didnt look repentant to me.

Outward appearances dont seem to indicate that Tookie was not repentant. I would have liked to see him admit his murders,apologize to the families of the victims, say that he was a slave of Satan at the time of the killings ,and express his belief in Christ and appreciation for his sacrifice on the Cross. That didnt happen. So I find the whole thing sad.

About 20 years ago in Florida a convicted killer was put to death ( I cant remember his name) but I remember what he said, “I have hostility towards none and may God bless all”. At the time I thought
here was a man who had really changed inwardly.

In case we forget, God can and does forgive murderers who believe in his Son and repent of thier sins. And in case we forget, we ALL deserve the death penalty for our sins.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.â€

Despite his alleged turnaround, prison officials state Williams is still involved with the Crips, directing action from his jail cell for the past eleven years. San Quentin spokesman Vernell Crittendon notes Tookie still maintains an â€œunusually large bank account,â€ being mailed checks 50 or 100 times larger than those other inmates (like Scott Peterson) receive. Not only has he never admitted guilt in the murder â€“ much less expressed any remorse â€“ and continues to consort with Crips in prison.

And heâ€™s never helped the one force that could effectively stop the Crips: the Los Angeles Police Department. Tookie Williams has revealed nothing about the personnel, practices, or operational structure of the gang he co-founded. In his writings, he boasts he â€œunderwent many years of soul-searching and re-education, without â€˜debriefingâ€™ (another word for â€˜snitchingâ€™).â€ Snitching, he says, would â€œrip my dignity out of my chestâ€ â€“ an unfortunate image for a man who shot (at least) four people through the torso at close range.

Tookieâ€™s good example failed to rub off on those closest to him. The California penal system seems to be holding a Williams family reunion. His son, Stanley â€œLittle Tookieâ€ Williams Jr., serves alongside him in San Quentin, convicted on a 16-year sentence for second-degree murder of a 20-year-old woman. Another son, registered sex offender Lafayette Jones, is now wanted by Fontana, California, police for allegedly molesting an ex-girlfriendâ€™s 13-year-old daughter at gunpoint, holding the child captive for six hours on the afternoon of on November 13.
