Update (12/22):: Yes, Samantha, there is a God.

“[C]omplex design is random—didn’t you know that?” — James White
“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.” — Charles Darwin
As I’m sure you’ve heard, a federal court has decided that it is unconstitutional to teach Intelligent Design, the audacious claim that precious life didn’t emerge by chance — out of some primordial muck, randomly evolving from single-celled organisms, which are themselves astoundingly complex beyond our meager understanding, into thinking human beings — but from an Intelligent Being who designed it all, from the entire universe, including planet Earth, which happens to be PERFECTLY suited for life, down to the irreducibly complex eye, breathtakingly stupendous in its design and function.
Take a breath!
Secular humanism is the state religion, an actual violation of the Constitution and not the court’s misinterpretation of the Establishment Clause. Its nutty hypothesis that miraculous life was dependent on “random chance,” that man evolved from apes, and the glorious creation we see all around us is simply a well-timed accident, is what kids in government schools are to be taught, with no room for an alternative explanation for our existence.
The idea that a Creator had a hand in it all is relegated to the home and church, although we pay taxes for schools that teach the state religion. Secularists don’t even want the issue debated or kids exposed to “ignorance.” We came from apes, there is no God, and that’s that!
(Somebody tricked the godless into believing that faith and science are mutually exclusive and only atheistic types, those who don’t believe in a supernatural being, are reasonable. The rest of us are unintelligent, ignorant and Dark Ages kooks.)
I had to run some errands this morning and didn’t feel like taking the subway. I took a cab. The driver’s got National Public Radio blaring in my ears, and guess what was on? Diane Rehm and a couple of “scholars” were discussing the “victory” with unrestrained glee. I thought, Great! A young, Middle Eastern, Muslim, secular humanist cab driver who LOVES NPR. What are the chances (pardon the pun)?
Well, at least he’s cute.
I can’t describe the feeling I got when I learned he wasn’t a secular humanist or even a Muslim: he was a Christian who was just as disgusted by the decision as I was! It all began with a head shake. One guy on the radio could barely contain his joy, and the cabbie shook his head. Another gleeful outburst from the airwaves, and the cabbie shook his head again.
(If there’s anyone out there who still believes NPR is NOT a leftist, taxpayer-supported propaganda machine, you’re smoking too much crack.)
“I saw the headlines this morning, and I didn’t bother reading the stories. Too early to get upset,” I offered hopefully. Is this guy for or against?
The cabbie starts nodding his head. “Yes,” he exclaimed in agreement.
The floodgates opened. The topics of conversation ranged from the hypocrisy of teaching the religion of secular humanism on the taxpayer’s dole and banishing Intelligent Design (which doesn’t necessarily have a religious component), to Charles Darwin’s flawed The Origin of Species and the real reason the godless don’t want to acknowledge a Designer: once you recognize that a Higher Being made you for a purpose, it occurs to your magnificently-designed brain that you might be accountable to him/her/it someday. Scary thought, isn’t it?
Thought? What a wonderful, emerged-by-chance creation accident that is!
Anyway, so the cabbie and I are liberally using the word “God.” I figured he was referring to Allah and thought, OK. We may not be talking about the same entity, but at least we agree that some kind of God exists.
Lo, and behold, he began to use the word “Christians.” Positively and without disgust! After a few more minutes, I realized that this young, Middle Eastern (and cute) cab driver was a Christian. It was a joyous trip, indeed.
So I continued running errands, which included going to Virginia to pick up my car from a friend who watched over it while I was out of town for an extended period (Take a breath!), and on the way home, I listened to a classical music station playing a medley of Christmas songs sung by a choir. Beautiful voices singing songs about my Savior and the commemoration of his birth.
I sat there listening and feeling very blessed, and something happened that occurs only once in awhile and for very brief periods of time: I was speechless.
Merry Christmas!
