Greetings and salutations!
Ted Hayes, a dreadlocked, “rasta” Republican says the 35 men, women, and children living in the homeless shelter he founded will be kicked out because of his political affiliation. After he spoke at a Republican Women’s Club, his liberal landlord (white?) decided to exercise his property right and raise the building’s rent from $2,500 a month to $18,330. There is nothing subtle about liberals! Hayes says the man is booting him and the homeless out because he’s a Republican.
“And people think the Democrats are the party of compassion and tolerance,” Hayes writes in the Opinion Journal. Only the unenlightened, Mr. Hayes. Most people know that Democrats are intolerant of many things, including Christianity and ideological diversity. Their tolerance is only skin deep.
And their idea of compassion begins and ends with making sure multiple generations of “coloreds” are dependent on government handouts (welfare, grants, skin color preferences, etc.). And when Republicans are called “racists” for suggesting that government dependence is NOT the way to go through life, the compassionate and tolerant Democrats get to pat themselves on their collective liberal back as the government-dependent continue to vote for the “generous” party.
Being the good conservative and private property rights supporter that he is, Hayes will not sue the lib:
Private property should be protected, of course, and I have no intention of causing any trouble for this property owner as we part ways. Whatever he does with his valuable land–it is only a few blocks from the Staples Center–is no concern of mine, and I will not go to court.
That’s something you won’t ever hear a liberal say.
They will sue for just about anything. You look at them a certain way, they might sue you for intimidation. If an ugly man asks her out, a liberal woman just may sue for sexual harassment. If a black lib doesn’t make the grade or get the job, it must be because he’s black, not unqualified or incompetent. And if a private property owner decides to exercise his property right and raise the rent, he’d better hope the “discriminee” is a conservative.
Otherwise, he may be sued for sex/race/age/animal/vegetable/mineral/pervert discrimination.
Here’s to a productive, healthy, and controversial 2006!

And I thought this year was going to be boring…
Let the games begin
Happy New Year La Shawn!!!
Merry New Year, Renee!
Happy New Year La Shawn
Intriguing story. I can understand the profit motive, but eviction based of Party affiliation seems a novel claim. It would be interesting to know if the landlord is, in fact, white (and a liberal Democrat).
Even if Mr Hayes chooses not to sue, perhaps one of your readers – familiar with California law – can tell us whether there are criminal implications for this this kind of rent gouging….
Of course, I imagine he picked the right forum to express his woes, because I have no doubt that this (RWC) “point of light” will help Mr Hayes find a new place to shelter his homeless tenants.
I’m about as anti-lawsuit as they come, but it wouldn’t bother me a bit if Hayes sued — if the landlord lowered his rates to attract tenants once there was a vacancy.
If this is true, then the property owner has some serious explaining to do.
I have a question about this because Hayes’ politics have been known for some time, so I don’t see why it matters to the land lord now. Hayes hasn’t been quiet about his views.
After Cobb first mentioned him I did some research on him and found out he’s been vocal.
And the land lord denies it of course.
Nothing like a good, firey rant to get me back into the the real world after the holidays.
I think I would understand *why* Hayes was suing, if he chose to. But I respect him more for not doing it. He’s absolutely right about property rights, etc. And although it’s a heartless thing for the landlord to do, it is his right and a lawsuit would be frivolous.
Doesn’t make the guy any less of a scrooge. (ok. Maybe I’m not completely out of the holidays. yet.)
The guy is crying wolf. after doing five minutes of research on this anyone would have found this.
“Los Angeles is undergoing a similar revitalization, as developers rush to build the area near the Staples Center. One firm, Gerding/Edlen, will break ground in September on the Elleven, the area’s first new-construction condo development in more than 20 years. Prices are expected to range from a low of $300,000 to $1 million.”
Not about his politics but about the almighty dollar. But then again even some black republicans like to play victim card.
I hope Mr. Hayes can find a new location to continue serving the homeless and modeling true compassion.
How boring life would be without clever folks like you in it, Clayton. Ted Hayes made reference to the Staple Center, so your “five minutes of research” could have been spent on something productive. The building owner can raise his rent to take advantage of revitalization AND because Hayes is a Republican. Your “gotcha” moment is, predictably, limp.
The issue is whether the liberal idiot indeed raised the rent because of Hayes’s political affiliation, not whether there’s revitalization going on near the Center. But as Hayes and most conservatives would say, the property owner is well within his right to raise the rent for any reason.
Lets see the idiot liberal is sitting on property that has more than likely has a massive jump in value. But, somehow this is about politics? I wonder how many others are being displaced by this revitalization?
What are the two basic rules in Real Estate? Location and timing or maybe I just played a little to much Monopoly. Not a “gotcha” moment just trying to put some facts to some people’s version of the truth.
Clayton, try to pay attention. We don’t need real estate lessons from you. No one is arguing that the property owner can’t do with his property what he wants, not even Hayes. Your implication was that Hayes was trying to hide facts, and I pointed out that he wasn’t. So in my assessment, your “gotcha” moment was limp.
If you want to change it up now, go ahead. It’s a free country. You libs entertain me. You really do.
And, let it be noted that if it were a black LIBERAL tenant and an evil, white, Republican landlord Clayton and others would likely be screaming and caterwauling about racism and who knows what else. Jesse Jackson would get involved (where is he, by the way? Shouldn’t he be standing by Mr. Hayes and screaming for justice or something?)…and the ACLU? The NAACP? Does anyone else hear crickets chirping?
I applaud Mr. Hayes for his strength of character.
Happy New Year to you, LaShawn!! Hope 2006 is even more blessed and fabulous than 2005.

La Shawn – you might want to check out Ted Hayes’ own website.
It has an interview he did with Hannity and Colmes on Fox on it.
I think it is pretty obvious from the story that the landlord did do this out of petty spitefulness.
PS – thanks for your spell check button – that’s great!!
And you wont hear a thing from JESSIE JACKSON and AL SHARKTON and not one word from the LA Times and the NAACP
Typical Libs *cough cough Clayton…cough*
throwing their 1 penny in, while the rest of us shoulder the burden.
I COMMEND Mr. Hayes for not suing, and like others, hopes he finds a new place for himself and his homeless families soon.

“…Democrats are intolerant of many things, including Christianity…”
What’s ironic is that there are a lot of church-going black people who vote Democrat.
Ted Hayes has gotten quite a bit of criticism in Los Angeles, not just because of his political affiliation, but because he, apparently, left his wife and daughter to live and work full time at the Dome Village.
Of course, liberals do not attack Bill Clinton the way they attack Ted Hayes down here, and there is no evidence that he cheated on his wife.
I will say that sooner or later, this was bound to happen because the area around the Staples Center is attracting lots of development dollars right now, so Mr. Haye’s claim that this was done out of spite is immediately believable.
Liberals are still being as condescending and mean as ever about this. On another website, I read one liberal berate Mr. Hayes for having the audacity to complain about his “liberal landlord giving him a discount” and being so ungrateful.
Honestly, I think Mr. Hayes just needs to move on at this point. His pet project, as virtuous as it is, could not have possible lasted forever.
I meant “not immediately believable.” Sorry
Go to Hayes website. He reports exactly what the landlord said. If it’s not about the landlord’s political opinions, then Hayes is a liar.
The democrats do not like to see minorities that are conservative.
A guess a real by the bootstrap republican would ask why Mr Hayes never tried to secure a long term lease to protect his organization interests, since develop has been creeping at his doorstep since 1997? Which by the way is a standard practice for nonprofits in that type of situation.
