Liberal Columnist: Blacks Must Deal With Murder Rate

by La Shawn on January 10, 2006

in Liberals

According to Tuskegee Institute data, 3,445 black Americans were lynched in this country between 1882 and 1968. As horrific as that Jim Crow “justice” was, it pales compared with the black-on-black carnage now taking place.

Finally, someone other than a “sell out” black conservative is pointing fingers at the right people instead of blaming “white racism” on the fact that blacks kill other blacks at an alarming rate.

Dewayne Wickham is a black liberal columnist who’ll no doubt receive a Titanic-size load of hate mail about his latest column. He writes:

A distinguished group of black Americans will assemble in Washington next month to put finishing touches on a blueprint for uplifting their race. Called “The Covenant with Black America,” this plan is the product of a brain trust of black leaders — people committed to fixing what’s broken in black America.

wickhamThe 254-page document, a copy of which I obtained in advance of its scheduled late February release, is an action plan to make black people healthier, improve the education of black children, reduce the high black incarceration rate and help black Americans acquire wealth and become economically self-sufficient.

As important as all of this is, it doesn’t go far enough. (Source)

chart We’re all familiar with the Bureau of Justice Statistics numbers. The rates for blacks as victims and perpetrators are disproportionately high relative to our percentage of the populations.

Look at the chart of the right. Most of those black victims were victimized by black criminals, not white. Want to get really controversial? Guess what percentage of white victims was also victimized by blacks. For the answer, keep scrolling.

Although numbers can be manipulated, they don’t lie. If some want to argue that whites commit more crimes overall, go ahead. The fact remains that the black crime rate is disproportionately and scandalously high. Instead of being outraged by this, certain black liberals are outraged by the messenger’s nerve (guts?) to utter the message.

I searched for “Covenant with Black America” and found this. From the about section:

As we witnessed in the 2004 presidential election, Americans are deeply divided between race, class, gender, political ideology and moral values. A divide so extreme, that in order to bridge it, we must speak openly, freely, without judgment and work together.

(The site links to Tavis Smiley, who led last year’s unintentionally funny State of the Black Union.)

All well and good, but I hope people are ready to be honest even if it hurts. I’ll try to use my Pajamas Media credentials to get an advanced copy of that 254-page report and read what they propose. I’m most interested in what they have to say about the 70 percent (and climbing) out-of-wedlock birth rate.

I followed the link to the “covenant” and noticed at the bottom of one of the pages and interesting statement. It read:

“Clarification of Intent: It is not our intent to define, determine, or prioritize these issues, nor to conclude how they are to be remedied.”

So what is their intent? Do they plan to simply sit around and talk about things? We all know there is a problem. Talking about it does not solve it.

Renee 01.10.06 at 4:19 pm

How can we take any forum serious (or any “covenant” that it would produce) that had “let’s teach our kids how to play with themselves” Jocelyn Elders as a member…

when I saw her on the panel, I knew it would be a funny event.

Could the real effort be all about book sales?

See: http://www.covenantwithblackamerica.com/ex_chpt1.html
Pre-order your copy now :) . BAHAHAHA!!!

On the “tour” page they list places where you will be able to get your copy signed! http://www.covenantwithblackamerica.com/moving.html

It’s the latest in an endless cycle of “plans”. And WE KNOW WHO will end up being the biggest gainer from it all. The folks behind the plan. I’m going to trackback a related post I just made, that gives the real solutions that Tavis won’t talk about, because it’s too easy and he can’t get paid off it.

Anyone with suggestions on the 70% out of wedlock birthrate issue? That alone seems like a recipe for poverty (on average). Once it becomes, “normal” how do you move back to attaching a stigma to it?

Renee 01.10.06 at 6:59 pm

Did anyone catch this line about “the Covenant”…

“The Covenant is about the future. About the hope of Black youth yet unborn. “….

Hmmm… isn’t’ this the same group that had Fay Waddleton as a panelist (Fay Waddelton, former president of Planned “baby killing” Parenthood)?? So much for the future eh

Allow me to translate (my comments in bold):

. . . an action plan to make black people healthier (cHillaryCare) , improve the education of black children(permanently ban charter schools and vouchers, i.e. Florida SC & NAACP) , reduce the high black incarceration rate (Free Tookie & Friends, Gangsta/Thug-ism is just free expression and/or fighting da Power) and help black Americans acquire wealth and become economically self-sufficient (higher minimum/living wages, redistribution, reparations and of course mo’ gubmint to bridge over the truth for those who won’t handle it — whilst worshipping at the alter of pimpin’, pro-sports, rappin’ & victimology).

Yup, it’ll take all of 254 pages and umpteen dead trees to flesh that plan out, when a simple link to T. Sowell’s archive would suffice. To wit: http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/thomassowell/2006/01/10/181665.html 8)

On second thought, to whom will this liberal tome be aimed at? It can’t be Little Johnnie, cuz Johnnie can’t read.

I pray for the day when the “black community” and other “nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen” exclusionary provisos get torpedoed out of the mainstream excuse-making lexicon.

Without regard to race, religion or origin of birth the pathologies that trash so many “African-Americans” are self inflicted wounds. Treating these wounds with blame carping, alcohol, drugs or malaise only leads to further degradation.

The first, most important step to recovery is to recognize your own role in the disaster.

In my early schooling I passed a sign every day that read: “The Lord helps those who help themselves.” What isn’t true about that?

Poverty clutches are like a pot of crabs. Those who work their way up toward the rim and freedom are constantly being pulled back into the teeming masses by those who roil and thrash below. A few escape and reach back to help others up. But they risk the powerful dynamic or those below who ignorantly reach up only to bring the pioneers back down. Those who think hip-hop, rap and “ebonics” are cultural mileposts thrive in the muck and mire of the crab pot.

It isn’t about “acting white.” It’s about seeing yourself as a worthy individual doing what it takes to succeed by the rules that came before you.

If you believe you will fail, you probably will. If your believe you will succeed and you are willing to keep trying, you probably will.

I wonder what this group would think of this man, that sued (and won) because he was promoted?

Again, the question is where to go from here? The situation in the black community in the US is not the same as that of poor families rising out of poverty in China in that there, family structures are still intact and the motivation is high. Here, the social network is frayed and priorities are skewed.

American Zealot 01.11.06 at 2:52 am

Excuse me for being blunt, but this will amount to nothing.

Perusing briskly, I realized that this is just another pageant of self-appointed leaders with no real solutions to black problems. Just look at the list of attending “dignitaries” - Julianne Malveaux, Constance Rice, Jesse Jackson, MICHAEL ERIC DYSON for God’s sake.

It’s a socialist boondoggle and nothing effective will come out of it.

Ah well, at least the country will get yet another example of why victimhood junkies talk the talk - but can’t walk the walk, because they don’t believe in the right things.

For an example of why this conference will amount to nothing - read the “the Convenant” Book section. Note how the solution to the education problem is framed as “public education” instead of simply “improving education” or “promoting achievement” or something non-political. These people are socialists, plain and simple, poverty pimps, self-loathing, victimhood-mongering SELLOUTS.

Agreed: the crab barrel syndrome is a plague. However, I do not agree with your assertion that “ebonics” or rap and hip-hop cause cultural decay. Both of those things can exist without the violenc and tawdriness of mainstream black culture.

More than anything, though, I must say that I am gap-jawed at your writing style - very acrobatic, very . A cool drink of water you are, my man. Keep up the good work.

I wonder what that little chart would show if we included how many women (black, white, etc.) had abortions during that same time span, would the numbers still be so lop-sided? Probably not. Mostly white women have abortions, somewhere around 60% last time I checked. Close to a million abortions are perfomed a year.

Once you push through the color and class and all that garbage, you get to the heart of the matter.

It’s the sin of disobeying God’s commandments.

Thou shalt not murder.
Thou shalt not covet.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Among others…

Its not a black problem or a white problem, it’s a sin problem.

Got to call it what it is.

The solution is getting to know Jesus. It’s really as simple as that.

We always want to make it more than what it really is.

Pierre Legrand 01.11.06 at 10:40 am

Thrasher!

Point taken, now explain why it is that Blacks are 6 times more likely to be murdered?

@13 - The promotion of “ebonics” endorses the use of a derivative of English that won’t get anyone a job unless it includes a microphone or a ball. Even Malcolm X said that Blacks should learn the English language.

@14 - Whites have more of everything including abortions because of their being the majority in America. However Blacks have a FAR HIGHER percentage of abortions compared to the percentage make-up of Blacks in the US population. Yes it’s a sin problem and every metric available proves that Blacks are having a major problem with it. Now it’s time to at least admit it.
If you have not already checked it out, you can get more details at http://www.blackgenocide.org/

@17

Well, non-standard English has been used in black households - as well as whites - for a couple hundred years now, during better times and worse times.

It is possible to speak a “black english” in the house, and speak flawless English in public as a lingua-franca. My family is from southern Louisiana and speak a derivative of creole French and English (at least my grandparents and cousins do; the California side, actually, speaks perfect book-English) that 99% of America would think is a completely different language.

Still, it is possible to speak a non-standard dialect and still be proficient in standard English - I am proof (as are the people on my step-mother’s side - pidgin English from Jamaica at home, but speak perfect English at the workplace).

Independent Conservative 01.11.06 at 5:45 pm

Most Black people who are doing well in the business world are an example of how people came up speaking one way at home then another in school and business.

I was speaking to the issue of the promotion of ebonics. Including people like Jesse Jackson and the Oakland School board’s efforts to have it permitted in schools. I was not necessarily trying to say it should be done away with totally.

However, I think it would probably be better if it was done away with. While people can speak good English outside of the home, many speak the same where ever they go. Which is why some Black folks go to job interviews and still can’t speak well. Now take for example Blacks in England. Everybody speaks correct English, so even the most poor of Blacks speaks better than many Blacks here in America.

To do away with ebonics and promote only correct English would do far more good than keeping it around.

Now as an adult in my house, we speak correct English 24/7. When I was a kid I spoke more of the ebonics, but no more. My use of it now is rare. It’s a shame that “Ebony” has even been associated with terrible gramme.

Black folks I know that spoke correct English in the home as children have an overall superior command of the language than those of us who did not speak correct English in the home as children. I think any formal study would prove that and everyone would say “duh, what did you expect the outcome to be”.

Like eating chitterlings every day for dinner, ebonics is a facet of Black culture that is best left alone or only done sparingly.

Independent Conservative 01.11.06 at 6:06 pm

Ha, talking about terrible grammar and spelled it wrong. Too funny!

Independent Conservative 01.11.06 at 6:08 pm

And what if more Texans spoke proper English? It may have helped our President out big time :D .

SCSIwuzzy 01.11.06 at 9:35 pm

Uh, IC, everyone in England speaks proper English? Ever hear some of the dialects? Many in use in the big cities, as well as the country side. Think cockney Londoners. :)

Clayton Bigsby 01.11.06 at 10:17 pm

There is no such thing as properly spoken english. There are acceptable forms of spoken english. Only when english is written is it proper.

Independent Conservative 01.11.06 at 10:19 pm

True. I probably over generalized. But I will say, that I have seen many interviews with Blacks in the “slums” of jolly old England and they could speak the language a heck of a lot better than Black people in the “slums” of America.

Just the same, the fact remains that if ebonics were rejected overall Blacks would be better off in the end, if proper English was embraced and used full time.

I see absolutely no need to laud bad English, which is what it really is. It’s not something that exists because of a community’s strong command of the English language, but rather the opposite.

And again I’ll say, it’s a shame this is even associated with “Ebony” in the first place.

All this talk about “plans” to help Blacks, while embracing talk that does nothing to help any Black out of a bad situation. It’s time to foster a culture of education, standards and move forward.

The best plan a Black person ever had was to go to church and school, then strive to be the best. That includes in using the English language.

The “comfortable language” used in some homes is not helping anybody get anywhere.

American Zealot 01.12.06 at 3:15 am

@24 Well it seems that your definition of “proper English” is popular standard English, which is fine.

I, however, will go with Bigsby. English that can be understood when written is best when spoken as well, because communication between unfamiliar people happens most efficiently through writing, which, as we all know from going through kindergarted and first grade, is HIGHLY STANDARDIZED, and properly so.

nyblues 01.13.06 at 7:24 pm

Well, I definitely agree that blacks have to take more responsibility for ourselves. No excuses, this is something definitely within our control.
