Well, I definitely agree that blacks have to take more responsibility for ourselves. No excuses, this is something definitely within our control.

@24 Well it seems that your definition of "proper English" is popular standard English, which is fine.

I, however, will go with Bigsby. English that can be understood when written is best when spoken as well, because communication between unfamiliar people happens most efficiently through writing, which, as we all know from going through kindergarted and first grade, is HIGHLY STANDARDIZED, and properly so.

True. I probably over generalized. But I will say, that I have seen many interviews with Blacks in the "slums" of jolly old England and they could speak the language a heck of a lot better than Black people in the "slums" of America.

Just the same, the fact remains that if ebonics were rejected overall Blacks would be better off in the end, if proper English was embraced and used full time.

I see absolutely no need to laud bad English, which is what it really is. It's not something that exists because of a community's strong command of the English language, but rather the opposite.

And again I'll say, it's a shame this is even associated with "Ebony" in the first place.

All this talk about "plans" to help Blacks, while embracing talk that does nothing to help any Black out of a bad situation. It's time to foster a culture of education, standards and move forward.

The best plan a Black person ever had was to go to church and school, then strive to be the best. That includes in using the English language.

The "comfortable language" used in some homes is not helping anybody get anywhere.

There is no such thing as properly spoken english. There are acceptable forms of spoken english. Only when english is written is it proper.

Uh, IC, everyone in England speaks proper English? Ever hear some of the dialects? Many in use in the big cities, as well as the country side. Think cockney Londoners. :)

Most Black people who are doing well in the business world are an example of how people came up speaking one way at home then another in school and business.

I was speaking to the issue of the promotion of ebonics. Including people like Jesse Jackson and the Oakland School board's efforts to have it permitted in schools. I was not necessarily trying to say it should be done away with totally.

However, I think it would probably be better if it was done away with. While people can speak good English outside of the home, many speak the same where ever they go. Which is why some Black folks go to job interviews and still can't speak well. Now take for example Blacks in England. Everybody speaks correct English, so even the most poor of Blacks speaks better than many Blacks here in America.

To do away with ebonics and promote only correct English would do far more good than keeping it around.

Now as an adult in my house, we speak correct English 24/7. When I was a kid I spoke more of the ebonics, but no more. My use of it now is rare. It's a shame that "Ebony" has even been associated with terrible gramme.

Black folks I know that spoke correct English in the home as children have an overall superior command of the language than those of us who did not speak correct English in the home as children. I think any formal study would prove that and everyone would say "duh, what did you expect the outcome to be".

Like eating chitterlings every day for dinner, ebonics is a facet of Black culture that is best left alone or only done sparingly.

Well, non-standard English has been used in black households - as well as whites - for a couple hundred years now, during better times and worse times.

It is possible to speak a "black english" in the house, and speak flawless English in public as a lingua-franca. My family is from southern Louisiana and speak a derivative of creole French and English (at least my grandparents and cousins do; the California side, actually, speaks perfect book-English) that 99% of America would think is a completely different language.

Still, it is possible to speak a non-standard dialect and still be proficient in standard English - I am proof (as are the people on my step-mother's side - pidgin English from Jamaica at home, but speak perfect English at the workplace).

@13 - The promotion of “ebonics” endorses the use of a derivative of English that won't get anyone a job unless it includes a microphone or a ball. Even Malcolm X said that Blacks should learn the English language.

@14 - Whites have more of everything including abortions because of their being the majority in America. However Blacks have a FAR HIGHER percentage of abortions compared to the percentage make-up of Blacks in the US population. Yes it's a sin problem and every metric available proves that Blacks are having a major problem with it. Now it's time to at least admit it.
If you have not already checked it out, you can get more details at http://www.blackgenocide.org/

La Shawn Barber is calling for the black community to look inward, and begin to deal with some problems within their community. She does this by using a piece by Dewayne Wickham which discusses the upcoming “The Covenant with Black America,” meetings in Washington. Interesting story / post, and regardless of your views on the issues involved – education, poverty, crime, etc – it is worth a read.

I wonder what that little chart would show if we included how many women (black, white, etc.) had abortions during that same time span, would the numbers still be so lop-sided? Probably not. Mostly white women have abortions, somewhere around 60% last time I checked. Close to a million abortions are perfomed a year.

Once you push through the color and class and all that garbage, you get to the heart of the matter.

It's the sin of disobeying God's commandments.

Thou shalt not murder.
Thou shalt not covet.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Among others...

Its not a black problem or a white problem, it's a sin problem.

Got to call it what it is.

The solution is getting to know Jesus. It's really as simple as that.

We always want to make it more than what it really is.

Agreed: the crab barrel syndrome is a plague. However, I do not agree with your assertion that "ebonics" or rap and hip-hop cause cultural decay. Both of those things can exist without the violenc and tawdriness of mainstream black culture.

More than anything, though, I must say that I am gap-jawed at your writing style - very acrobatic, very . A cool drink of water you are, my man. Keep up the good work.

Excuse me for being blunt, but this will amount to nothing.

Perusing briskly, I realized that this is just another pageant of self-appointed leaders with no real solutions to black problems. Just look at the list of attending "dignitaries" - Julianne Malveaux, Constance Rice, Jesse Jackson, MICHAEL ERIC DYSON for God's sake.

It's a socialist boondoggle and nothing effective will come out of it.

Ah well, at least the country will get yet another example of why victimhood junkies talk the talk - but can't walk the walk, because they don't believe in the right things.

For an example of why this conference will amount to nothing - read the "the Convenant" Book section. Note how the solution to the education problem is framed as "public education" instead of simply "improving education" or "promoting achievement" or something non-political. These people are socialists, plain and simple, poverty pimps, self-loathing, victimhood-mongering SELLOUTS.
