Nagin'' …and the “black community” in particular, which is why Hurricane Katrina rained down on New Orleans.

I wonder if the wrath of the leftist media, the godless (and Democrats), and non-Bible-reading Christians (including bloggers) will rain down on New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin for that statement the way they do every time Pat Robertson (and Jerry Falwell) opens his mouth?

If I were a betting woman, I’d wager they’ll give him a pass. How about you?

Related: God is Sovereign in the Natural Realm

Videotape?

Addendum: I challenge all bloggers (and journalists) who criticized Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell for “divine retribution” statements to jump on New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin for making similar statements. Trackback.

Update (1/17): New Orleans evacuees pocket rent checks while FEMA continues paying for hotels.

Yes, let’s rebuild New Orleans!

Update II:

1) Mean Dean spoofs Nagin.

2) Ray Nagin apologizes??? Isn’t anyone man enough these days to stand behind what he says, no matter how unpopular and controversial? They should all be like Tancredo.

3) In light of Hurricane Katrina and poverty, one subject very important to the conversation but seldom discussed is the marriage gap.

Update III: This is a really cool spoof. Talented bloggers.

It was the one in which he talked of “I have been to the mountain top and I have seen the promised land” where he eloquently compared the plight of black Americans to that of the Jews being led out of the dessert by Moses. He knew that he would not survive to see the great strides he would give his life for. “When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run - it has been run like a plantation,” she said. “You know what I’m talking about.”

Mrs. Clinton, who was addressing a packed house at the Reverend Al Sharpton’s annual Martin Luther King Day event at Canaan Baptist Church in Harlem, continued: “It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary point of view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard. He sees a city that is certain to change in its ethnic mix with a good portion of former residents never returning. He was upset over the shooting at the parade and crime in N.O. He is probably tired beyond belief, feels hopeless and probably does believe that God has punished his city. I think that was reflected in his statement but as a public figure, he’s not supposed to speak his mind if it offends anybody. Trouble is, everybody is offended by something. Maybe it’s time for Nagin to turn over the reins to somebody else and allow himself to recover from his depression, but I don’t think he should be ostracized. And by the way, I’m white.

It has so many flavors and textures and nuances that it qualifies as the only real GUMBO city in the world in my humble opinion.

First this worthless “leader” failed to do anything while his citizens were drowning in a flood caused by Hurricane Katrina. Then he didn’t accept any responsibility for his failings blaming it on the federal and state government and FEMA. Now…

  84. Ray Nagin — You Decide

Overall, the media is treating him as a harmless aside. There’s been no firestorm over his daring to claim that God may not be happy with us. (If only Pat Robertson were black! Or a Democrat!) Of course, he’s apologized, leaving us to wonder if there…

Get some white guys to dress up like milk, add some black guys to play the Quik powder, mix ‘em up, presto - a tasty beverage.

    That would RULE.

  87. LaShawn Barber has issued a challenge for those “non-Bible-reading Christians” and others who normally bash Robertson. She wants to see if any come out against Nagin. I have to say that I don’t know if Mayor Nagin is right or not. He said it. Something had to put that notion on his mind. The Holy Spirit may just be working on this man. I think he is stretching it by trying to drag in international political matters, and how black men treat their women, but he may be on to something with this wrath of God thing in general. Who knows other than God himself? Nobody really knows exactly what God is thinking and that is the way God intended it.

But seriously, one thing that the Katrina disaster showed is that it could kill you if your local and state officials are incompetent.

  91. nagin is a racist, self-serving hypocrite just like jesse, louie, and big al, who should be brought up on charges for his total mishandling of the evacuation during Katrina. His family was safe in Dallas, while the people who pay his bills where suffering from his gross incompetence. Why should we, the American taxpayer, have our hard earned money sent to help this city out of its mess? According to the msm, only n.o. was hit during the hurricane. Guess the rest of those people along the gulf coast just don’t rate. Must be because they are not predominately “chocolate”.

As vile as this sounds, I hope the next hurricane hits n.o and wipes it off the map completely. The issues surfacing now have been plaguing that city forever. Nobody cared before how corrupt the mayor, the police force, city council was until the water flooded in and forced the scum to the top. I did hear comments from nagin’s constituency defending his remarks. Truly amazing, in this day of readily available information, how ignorant some people still choose to be.

  96. Mr. Nagan’s comment implies that God had decreed slavery.

Since New Orleans was founded by the French it was not an area populated by people of (according to Mr. Nagan) the proper pigmentation. Thus apparently according to this gentlemen the development of New Orleans as a slave market was desired and necessary to satisfy God’s desire to produce the proper racial composition for the city.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like the people who defended slavery and Jim Crow in the guise of religion during the 18 to the mid 20th century?

  97. When I make Nesquick I use a whole glass of milk and two spoons of chocolate, so does that mean Mr. Nagin’s New Orleans will be mostly white with just a couple of scoops of blacks?

  98. This comment is directed towards Theresa’s above. I understand everyone’s frustration with our Mayor’s comments. He’s clearly out of his mind. As one of the “uptown” (read: white) people he so carelessly talks about in his speech, I take his comments very personally. However, there is no call at all for people such as Theresa, no matter how well-founded their anger at Mayor Nagin, to openly wish for my home to be destroyed. I am tired of people from all over this country making a judgment on our right to live in this place. We don’t really give a damn about the fact that it wouldn’t ruin ya’ll’s lives if our beloved city was destroyed - it’s our home you idiots - whether you like it or not. I am not responsible for the mayor’s comments, I didn’t vote for him, why wish ill on all of us who live here??? It’s hypocrital and ignorant. THere is a large population of soulful and wonderful people of all colors and creeds down here in New Orleans. You don’t see the good things going on down here on your news - it’s happening, but I guess it doesn’t make for good fodder to spout off about on the internet so of course you wouldn’t bother finding out the whole story. Yes, we have had our problems but guess what lady, a lot of big cities struggle with these same issues. We just happen to be a metropolis located in one of the poorest states with a deep-seated history of class problems. You should think twice before talking about things that you clearly know nothing about and claiming to be so high minded while wishing for people’s home to be destroyed.

  102. Carla, #98….I wish you no ill or misfortune. Certainly New Orleans has the right to ask for understanding as it teeters on the brink of calamity along with the Gulf coast cities that are subject to hurricane destruction.

New Orleans is subject to a triple whammy or more. 1) It is dependent upon a levee system that makes it unique in the United States; 2) The governor of Louisiana has asked for/demanded reparations that are beyond all logical understanding; 3) Mayor Nagin is a failed leader who demands serious consideration; 4) Louisiana and New Orleans have long been victimized by institutional corruption.

If the rest of us look at your plight and wonder if more dollars won’t just fatten the goose of political opportunism, do you honestly wonder why?

Obviously, the honest Louisiana citizen should not be held accountable for the misdeeds of others. But considering the heritage of the Longs, Edwards, Landrieus and Nagin how are we who are outside of Louisiana to know whom to trust?
