Bryant Gumbel, once referred to as an “oreo” by certain people, said:
“So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.” (Source)
Having slept with white women while still married to his black wife (and mother of his children) of over 25 years and leaving her for a white woman, I guess Gumbel has the expertise to speak about the whiteness of things such as the Winter Olympics and GOP conventions.

Bryan Gumbel is an arrogant no-nothing. So he says the Winter Olympics are not “real” sport and that no “real” athletes are competing. What a bunch of nonsense, and on top of that he plays the race card about blacks and GOP conventions. I wonder what he thinks of black 10,000m speed skating GOLD MEDALIST Shani Davis. The brother also is not a “real” athlete?
See Davis here:

Well, I doubt one black gold medal winner will change Gumbel’s mind or the fact that cold climate countries dominate the Winter Olympics. I’ll wait patiently, however, for him to say something about a “Democratic Convention” during the Summer Olympics.
If Mr. Gumble calls the winter olympics a GOP convention, what would he call the NBA?
Bryant Gumbel, to paraphrase Shakesphere is “Much Ado About Nothing”
Very succinctly put La Shawn. Gumble’s a major hypocrite who needs to apologize for making such an inflammatory (and untrue) comment.
Never has a black man possessed so much white guilt.
I have to wonder, is Gumble a racist, a hypocrite, a racist/hypocrite or just a loud mouth media whore that’s trying to garner some ratings…
I’m betting on loud mouthed media whore…
In the early 70s, Bryant suggested that Joe Frazier was a white man in black man’s skin. Gumbel has always been a hateful ass.
Black people defending Gumbel, a man they used to call “oreo” and a rogue who cheated on and left his wife. Good job! I was merely pointing out that he could qualify as an expert on the topic of what’s “too white” and what’s not. I agree that there a few black athletes in the WO, but why would I or anyone else be “angry” about it? Strange. Let’s see how many whites are “angry” during the SO. Let’s see what would happen to a white man for saying the SO has so few whites, it looks like a Democratic Convention. Would you defend him? Of course not. Double standard applies. By the way, I deleted your comment because it was juvenile. I suspect you’re teenager, and I don’t like smart-alecky teenagers. – Admin
I didn’t know much about Gumble. After hearing what he said, then seeing him on t.v. with a white lady it caused me to pause for a second. Then the next thought was.. ‘typical liberal’… They say what they don’t really mean.
I hope the skating medal will encourage more black participation in winter sports. We learned long ago that any process that limits entry in a competition, whether it be overt or just “tradition”, limits the sucess in that field.
LIGHTEN UP !!!
Ture, Gumble is a left-wing media dog and surely a racist too, but his comment about the GOP is kind of funny. And that’s what his employer pays him for. Laugh a little, please.
“…Bryant Gumbel’s ego applied for statehood today. If granted, it would become our nation’s fifty-first state, and ninth largest.” –Dennis Miller, Weekend Update
La Shawn:
So Gumbo believes the Winter Olympics looks like a GOP convention.
So he might just say that the Summer Olympics looks like a Democratic Convention, especially for the Track and Field events.
Isn’t this the same guy that asked JC Watts what it was like to be an “Uncle Tom”?
This recalls certain incidents in the past concerning Howard Cosell and Jimmy the Greek. The difference being that Gumbel won’t be fired.
I followed the update link to the pictures of Gumbel with his new(er)wife. If he continues to make racist comments, I see a rather uncomfortable holiday dinner ahead if they spend Christmas at her folk’s house. Possibly he said the remark so that the general population knows he’s still on TV-I don’t have HBO, so I haven’t seen his show.
First of all, take a look at the vilification of Shani Davis in the white media during this past week. Second, Shani Davis was NOT promoted as a feature performer in these Olympic Games, as NBC put their emphasis on Bode Miller, Michelle Kwan, (now Emily Hughes) and Winter X-Gamers–(a sport that wasn’t even IN the Olympics 8 years ago.
The white media is still attacking Davis as being “selfish”, despite the fact he made history at this past Olympics.
Third let’s examine Bryant Gumbel. Bryant Gumbel is highly educated, successful and a trend setter in broadcast journalism. As a matter of fact, Bryant Gumbel represents EVERYTHING that white conservative blogs say African Americans CAN’T accomplish. Your REAL problem with Gumbel is that he won’t read off the pre-approved black conservative script that some other successful blacks have recited over the airwaves.
Sorry. The more I hear from Gumbel, the more of a fan I am.
–Cobra
Wow Cobra, thanks for the example
The more I hear from OJ the more of a fan I am of him…
The more I hear of Michael Jackson, the more of a fan I am…
The more I hear…blah blah blah
Renee,
I find it interesting, that you point out OJ Simpson, and Michael Jackson…two African-American wealthy enough to afford the best defense American Justice can offer and WIN.
Two figures, by the way, that have NO relationship with Bryant Gumbel, other than the fact that they are successful African-Americans who rose to the very top of their chosen fields of endeavor.
It’s funny, because white media attacked Shani Davis this past week as well–who just happens to be a “successful African-American who rose to the very top of his chosen field of endeavor.”
It’s very indicative of a common mindset in America.
Can you guess what that is?
–Cobra
LaShawn, I just posted about NBC’s treatment of Shani Davis, which is connected to Gumbel’s hot air. Thought you might be interested. Excerpt: “See, NBC desperately wanted Shani to be the Jackie Robinson of the Winter Olympics, to be the proof to naysayers like Gumbel, and to pat themselves on the back for being a part of it all. But Shani wouldn’t play the role.”
Shani’s an excellent skater and that’s that. He earned that gold. I just wish that his mother had been in the stands.
Congrats to Shani and Joey Cheek for their medals and all the other skaters. They are exceptional people.
I guess that sports can’t ever really cross the race divide for some of people. Bryant Gumbel seems to be so uncomfortable in his own skin that he has trouble seeing beyond it.
For the most part, I keep my nose out of who people marry and why, but there are some people who seem to shed mates and families when someone they perceive as a bigger trophy comes along. Bryant Gumbel is a climber without a goal and no sense of satisfaction. He is to be pitied, if for no other reason than that he is pitiful and stuck on race.
Cobra, you’re at it again, making wild statements without foundation, like this:
“…Bryant Gumbel represents EVERYTHING that white conservative blogs say African Americans CAN’T accomplish.”
Which “white conservative” blogs are saying that black Americans can’t succeed? I read a lot of them, and I’ve never seen any such ridiculous assertions. Just the opposite, in fact.
Seems to me that the worst examples of people ridiculing and belittling black success are disturbingly obnoxious people like Harry Belafonte (black leftie) and Ted Rall (white leftie). Shall I post links to their asinine and slanderous character assassinations of Dr. Rice and Gen. Powell? Nah. As Hillary said during her recent shameful race-baiting rant, you know what I’m talkin’ about.
Heard Larry Elder float the theory that many liberal black men who are married to white (or other non-black) women feel the need to be seen as champions for the race in order to attempt to deflect the “sell-out” “oreo” etc. labels. We used to call such the “talk black, sleep white” crew.
(See Julian Bond, Amiri Baraka, Harry Belafonte…)
Now I’m all for people being with whomever they want. Goodness knows that it’s hard to find someone of *any* color that will put up with another’s nonsense. But it’s seems to me that such fellows are a bit insecure about their choices. The attitude that whites are just so racist but not too racist to sleep with strikes me as just a bit dishonest, to perfectly understate the matter.
Gumbel’s GOP remark seems to be par for the course. But ditching his wife and family – what words can describe that? Try “sordid”, “squalid”, and “tawdry”, for starters.
The more I hear from (and about) Gumbel, the more disgusted I am.
“Having slept with white women while still married to his black wife (and mother of his children) of over 25 years and leaving her for a white woman”
Wow! I did not know that.
I should have said, “Gumbel’s tasteless GOP remark seems par for the course.”
Cobra-
How very stereotypical, or should I say “gumbel-esque” to make a blanket statement that white conservative blogs say blacks cannot achieve. Is there anything more boring on a comment thread than to see the same “race card” comments trotted out for all of us to see?
Well, I for one view Bryant Gumball as just that: a gumball: glossy on the outside, hollow in the inside, seems nice for a while, but after you’ve “tasted” him for a while, you need to spit him out.
I thought that by now we were supposed to be looking beyond race. My grandfather is racist, but thankfully I was not reared a racist. I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. King when he said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Mr Gumbel’s race-baiting and philandery shows that he disagrees with Dr. King. I judge him not by his skin, but by his lack of character.
Picky
Chris Roberts writes on the same blog where Gumbel is being attacked for being married to a white woman:
>>>”Is there anything more boring on a comment thread than to see the same “race card†comments trotted out for all of us to see?”
Case closed.
Redbeard writes:
>>>”Which “white conservative†blogs are saying that black Americans can’t succeed? I read a lot of them, and I’ve never seen any such ridiculous assertions. Just the opposite, in fact.”
Well, Red–look at this blog thread right here. The obviously implication made by these posters is that if you’re black, and you’re NOT a Republican, you’re either unsuccessful, brainwashed or a flag-burning liberal subversive. Even when they compliment a successful apolitical brother like Shani Davis, they can’t do so without smacking his mother around, who had the audacity to work two jobs, and push his son to excel everyday…which is by the way, what conservatives accuse the majority of black parents of NOT DOING.
You can read this for yourself, Red. Read back through this thread and tell me I’m making this stuff up.
–Cobra
Gumbel is typical of most libs. He makes outrageous, emotional statements, then he cannot back it up, so he avoids questions. Don’t lose any sleep over the dude..
He’s been taught well by his white liberal masters.
Meanwhile we give this fool relevence by deigning to comment on his feckless fumblings
Cobra-you’re making this stuff up. Rather than just pointing at this thread, if you have any actual white conservative blogs that you can point to to back up your racist claim, show em or fold.
Bryant Gumbel was a schmuck when he left his lovely wife June.
Bryant Gumbel is still a schmuck today…and a schmuck with the lowest rated morning show on TV!
Oh, Cobra….OJ and Michael Jackson are schmucks too! What world do you live in?
One reason I allow Cobra to comment is that he’s always entertaining and always riles people up.
He’s a leftist, but he doesn’t attack me personally (at least on this blog), unlike many black liberals who try to comment here. Cobra also baits other commenters. With him on the board, I know there’ll be a rousing discussion.
It’s finally dawned on me. I get it now. Cobra is running a huge and very, very well orchestrated scam on all of us. He’s really a conservative, and is satirizing leftism with these outrageous posts.
[Psssst, Cobra, listen, you're in danger of blowing your cover by going too far toward slapstick. Gotta tone it down just a hair to keep it real.]
Here’s a fact for Mr. Gumbel: Ten percent of the delegates to the 2004 Republican convention were black. The 2000 census found that 12.3 percent of the total American population is black. So the delegates to the Republican convention looked pretty much like America — at least as far as race is concerned.
La Shawn:
I have been thinking about Gumbel’s stereotyping a bunch of “Rich White Kids” from the Winter Olympics as “Republicans”. But this may be completely wrong.
Most of these athletes are “Spoiled Rich Kids”, many dope-smoking. And few have “real jobs”. Competition at this level just requires too much time comittment.
One bobsled champ works part time at Home Depot etc.. Not exactly capitalists.
Many depend on sponsorship by true capitalists. The non-winners don’t pay a lot of taxes.
My conclusion, then, is that many of these “Spoiled Rich White Kids” are NOT Republicans, but Democrats.
When Jimmy “the Greek” said controversial things regarding race he was forced out. When Rush Limbaugh said controversial things regarding race he was forced out. When Trent Lott said controversial things he was forced out. I could go on and on at the multitude of examples of liberals screaming bitterly for the heads of conservatives who have made statements, usually controversial, involving race…clearcut examples of liberal “free speech for me but not for thee” hypocrisy.
So where’s the outrage from the libs over Gumbel’s remarks? Imagine the outrage if Bill O’Reilly said the exact same thing.
Heard Larry Elder float the theory that many liberal black men who are married to white (or other non-black) women feel the need to be seen as champions for the race in order to attempt to deflect the “sell-out†“oreo†etc. labels. We used to call such the “talk black, sleep white†crew.
And the Black conservatives who go that route, only do so out of love?
Baldi, I’m surprised you would quote that statement. Man…
I think people are really upset more about the GOP convention comment. Now, check this out.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/820110/posts
BRYANT GUMBEL does not deny allegations of repeated adultery. “So what?” said his lawyer, Stanley Arkin.
“We are delighted to acknowledge it. That is a totally gratuitous allegation.”
What a jerk. Gumbel’s ex-wife should pulled a Brenda Richie on his butt. His ex-wife allowed herself to be a doormat.
DarkStar, I read the link you posted, and then I looked up the comments that were at the core of the controversy.
The author could have stated his case in a more PC manner, but the premise upon which he built the case for the South winning the Civil War included his basic assumption that no matter who won the war, slavery would have ended. I’m not sure I buy that theory, but it’s what he believed, and that should clear him of a lot of the accusations leveled against him.
To say that this man somehow minimized the evils of slavery is not quite accurate; it’s just that his topic was not about slavery, but the differing economic and political systems of North and South and how two separate nations might have evolved.
As for the hoopla within the California Republican Party, it sounds like open debate to me. What could possibly be more American?
Darkstar: You’re suprised about what I “said” because you’re inferring something into it that wasn’t said nor was it implied.
Did I say anything about whether love existed in such a pairing or not? Did I even address love? No. What I said was that *some* liberal black men become overly strident champions for the race when they are married to white women in order to avoid being labeled as “sell-outs,” “oreos,” etc.
Conservative black men (and women) are dubbed “sell-outs” and “oreos” regardless of who they marry, so the observation doesn’t apply to them.
Sheesh! Is it too much to ask for you to address what I *actually* said?
He frequently does that, Juliette. I was going to respond to his comment, but I thought it best to let you speak for yourself.
Baldi, I’ll take the blame for that one because it doesn’t read clear.
But first, I wrote that I was surprised you “quoted that statement”, not that you said or wrote anything.
So, let’s try that one again.
I’m surprised you quoted it because the “theory” is asinine as are the statements, in general, about Black men who marry white women.
I agree concerning your statement about Black conservatives being called sellouts and such. And based on that, my comment was an attempt to point out that it is all silly.
I’ll take the hit on being unclear.
RedBeard, I provided the link more to align with Bryant’s comments about Blacks at a GOP convention.
Let Bryant Grumbal (no mistake) have the first heart attack or stroke, and he may just see how good he had it.
He can’t complain about race if he’s not willing to take the heat all the way around.
Darkstar: Thanks.
He’s psychotic. Gumbel is in the same boat as OJ and Charles Barkeley: hypocrites married to white women that they left black wives for.
**scoff**
American Zealot writes:

As opposed to Clarence Thomas, Ward Connerly, and Lynn Swann huh?
Please…can one of you kind posters spell out the rules of engagement (pun intended) for M.W.B.–Marrying While Black? Is there a GOP E-Z Pass for marrying white women or something?
I need some clarification.
–Cobra
Cobra, I think you were talking about my comment about Shani Davis earlier and I want to point out your obvious bias against what you read. I did not slam his mother for not being there, I just wish that she could have attended. I don’t know why she wasn’t there as he didn’t say in his interview. You read something negative into something that was sympathetic. Maybe because I have the title “Republican” in my nick and you have a predisposition to believe the negative hype against us.
RepJ,
I wasn’t referring to any of your commentary. I was referring to Davis’s mother’s treatment by media and conservatives not exclusive to this weblog.
–Cobra

How about a man (skin color irrelevant) not ditching his wife and the mother (color also irrelevant) of his children (color still irrelevant) for a trophy wife (you guessed it – color once again still irrelevant)?
Is that GOP-esque enough for ya?
