Fatherless Boys, Rathergate, and Davids

Update II (3/27): From the Townhall.com review of An Army of Davids:

Reynolds provides a wide range of examples how new technologies empower individuals, from helping amateur musicians distribute their online music to the masses without record companies to allowing private citizens to respond to terrorist attacks and disasters better and more efficiently than the government.

New technologies can and are used for nefarious purposes, too. An Army of Davids covers such abuses as terrorists engaging in cyber warfare and the possibility that nanotechnology, (“manipulation of matter at the atomic and molecular level”), a topic Reynolds blogs about frequently, could be used as “disease” agents or that nanobots could “hide out in people’s brains.” (hat tip to Michael Crichton!). The positive aspect of nanotechnology is its potential to repair cells damaged by radiation or destroy cancer cells or deliver oxygen to the brain to protect from drowning. The possibilities – and abuses – are endless.

I’m out the door and will be on the Treo for most of the day. While I’m gone, turn your attention to these book reviews:

  • Review of An Army of Davids in the context of “Rathergate” at the CBS PublicEye blog.
  • Review of Raising Boys Without Men at Townhall.com (housemaker will be changed to read homemaker – minor nitpick)
  • Next week I’ll have a different version of the Davids review at Townhall. The book is filled with so many great ideas and potential article spin-offs.

Update (3:08 p.m.): So you guys aren’t interested in discussing my fabulous book reviews, huh? OK. Fine. Have a good weekend anyway. :?

Later…One more thing. I’ll have something to say about blogger and writer Ben Domenech (whom I’ve “known” and liked for a while – still do), who resigned as the Washington Post’s conservative blogger after he was accused of plagiarism. I’ve been out of the loop today. Everyone is blogging about. For more info, visit Decision ‘08, Obsidian Wings, Daily Pundit

Even later…Ben responds.

(Update 3/25): Good grief. This thing is in the NYT.

Contrition.

Awesome review on the “maverick lesbian and single moms” fiasco. The one scary thing that their form of parenthood produces (which is already being addressed in bible believing churches) is the feminization of men. Weak men who can not lead. As you mentioned, the negative effects of this have already been seen and proven in the black community (and the black church with the feminization of the churches and lack of biblical grounding). There is so much to say on this :-)

Thanks La Shawn for reviewing the book. I thought of reading it but I didn’t need yet another secular book trying to justify sin and leading folks down the road to hell.

Great review of “Army of Davids,” La Shawn. I haven’t read it yet, but I think I’m going to need to do that soon.

I tend to dwell on the [Rathergate] scandal because it was a joyous thing to behold.

I’m with you on that. I wasn’t blogging then, but what the blogs did in bringing out the truth (not to be confused with the CBS-wannabe-truth) was beautiful.

And the Rathergate comparison turns out to be apropos with the Domenech issue. I’m not at all satisfied with his response (not that he has to satisfy me of course). NRO seems to have decided he’s guilty.

Thanks LaShawn, this is very timely and I do echo Renee sentiments above and we can see the results and consequences of in our community, but, another thing although to some it may seem trivial but it isn’t in our community is also personal appearance.I thought Black women could be embarrasing with the way we dress sometimes the men are even more pathetic. It is bad enough now that are young women are so confused fashionalbly that now are men aren’t satisfied with one earring now they are wearing big button type’s on both ears! And when I see men Like Morgan Freeman(who I like a lot)and Ed Bradley doing this is speaks of immaturity,(they know very well that when they were teens and going into their twenties that look got a man beat up)How is the Black man gonna gain any respect when he has to me gender confusion about all that excess jewelry he wears,Even Will Smith he should realize that he is too damn old to wear such tawdryness.Jada needs a slap upside the head for allowing this. They haven’t been taught that real men don’t wear a lot of bling period!!I notice that when Pditty or whatever his moniker is now, needs to lose all that salable flash, even wearing a suit. They were ballcaps to award shows,Sidney Poitier, have never showed up looking this way.Personally,it is very unbecoming, just because you may wear that look to a ballgame,or the park doesn’t mean it is for every occasion.Hello,Black folks(the youngsters)that is why it is called sportswear!!Also, just because you were stupid enough to pay a big pile of dough on those rags doesn’t mean they look good everywhere. If you want to know how to really dress, look at pictures of our grandfathers, the only jewelry they wore if they could afford it was a watch, ring, and cufflinks.I think this has been one issue that has either been willingly or unwillingly neglected.Because, just because Terrell Owens can get away with this they can, but, every profession has a different look, and many of these other jobs are more serious, and they don’t settle for mediaocrity, which is what modern society has produced know.

very interesting and very good reviews.

I’ll have to take a look at both books.
Regarding the Army of David, I’ve always been cynical of the news media. Pretty much all of the news channels are owned by a few corporations.

This has nothing to do with your review, but have you heard of the near billion dollar settlement talks with the black woman who had originally come up with the idea of the Matrix films back in the late 70’s,early 80’s? Absolutely no coverage of this in the media because they are owned by the corporations accused of stealing her idea.

How I wish I had your writing talent…you get your point across very well.

I have sent your piece on the single and lesbian mom piece in the Washington Post on to friends. It is so sad to see more and more people depriving their adopted or sperm bank inseminated children of a father. It breaks my heart to see the rising numbers of such families.

The bible is very clear that every child is to honor his or her father in one way and his or her mother in another way, for each parent brings something different to the task of raising one or more children. In this day and age, the father gets the bum rap on most sit-coms on TV and that seems to be the new mantra for many super moms with husbands. Men need to step up to the plate and be an equal partner in the raising of their children. I was reading a piece on the single mothers who shop the sperm banks to raise theiur children as single parents (in the NY Times Magazine) and the only part that made any sense to me was when one mom found a new boyfriend and said that it gave her such a sense of peace to see her new boyfriend playing with her child as a father figure. Kids need both a mother and a father and you are absolutely right that no study done correctly will ever say differently. Sadly, in this day and age, there will be some studies that will not be done correectly but done in a biased way to support the desires of single super moms. God help our children.

lukeNC: the latest news shows that case was dismissed in mid 2005 after she failed to adhere to the court’s rules and deadlines. And only 1 news corporation is owned by those accused of stealing her story, Fox.

Back on topic, LaShawn, I thought your review of “maverick lesbian and single moms” was very well written. I don’t think children without a mom and a dad are doomed to failure like some here apparently think, but I do think it is better to have both parents raising a child than just one.

Thomas..thanks for the update…

still proves my point that the news media chooses what they want to highlight.

The self defeating welfare rule that a male could not live in the house if the mother was drawing welfare.
