Update II (5/18): Michelle Malkin’s doing what I don’t have the stomach to do: monitoring the Senate debate on what to do with illegal aliens. More at Hot Air.
Yeah, throw us a bone, why don’t you?
It’s a shame this was necessary, but there you go.
Ann Coulter: “Press “1″ for English; press “2″ for a new president …”
Update (5:04 p.m.): That was a nice break. Back to what I do. Well, the Senate got the job half done. It stinks, but what can you do? I don’t know how they plan to build that “triple-layered” fence, but it needs to be a serious piece of equipment with electronic capabilities. Now wouldn’t it be “funny” if they hired illegal aliens to build the fence?
By the way, I hinted at joining the elites in Greatness Falls.
Michelle Malkin visits a local and infamous 7-11 and connects the dots.
Yeah, what he said.

I’m going for a long walk in the cool May breeze. I may stop by one of the dozens of Starbucks in my neighborhood, sans laptop, order a House Blend, grab a window seat, and people-watch. I may blog again today. Maybe not.
Enjoy!
- Heritage Report: Amnesty and Continued Low Skill Immigration Will Substantially Raise Welfare Costs and Poverty — Illegal aliens from Mexico are quickly becoming the new black. If you think there’s racial and ethnic tension now, wait until Mexicans and other illegal aliens start dominating entitlement programs currently in place for blacks. Blacks will once again realize how odious skin color privileges are, as they did during Jim Crow. If you’re not already doing so, now would be a good time to build wealth to insulate yourselves from the fallout.
Black liberals who continue to fight privatizing social security are out of their minds. People better smarten up and think long term real quick. Reconstruction is over.
- Illegal aliens get discounted mortgages in Illinois
- Illegal aliens in the Untied States claim earned income credit for dependents in Mexico
- Reform bill to double immigration — It’s cultural suicide. As long as I live, I’ll never understand why politicians are doing it. America the great, so long…
- A foreign government threatens to sue the U.S. for enforcing its own laws, and American taxpayers will pay the bill. If it weren’t so absurd, I’d laugh. If the people who formed and built this country could see how weak and limp its leadership has become…it would probably be like dying all over again.
- Interesting: Cost of illegal immigrants…Over a 5-year period the breakdown would be:
1) Allowing illegals to remain: $340 Billion
2) Deportation: $206 Billion - Senate rejects border-security-before-guest-worker-program amendment — As much as I hate to say it, if politicians want the overrun of illegal aliens to continue, it will. Without the commitment of an admittedly faithless and weak White House to enforce the law when it comes to Mexicans, it ain’t going to happen, no matter how many tantrums we throw. To quote Top Gun: “The pattern is
pulledfull.” [The pattern is full? Are you sure? So I’ve been misquoting the movie all these years? Well, I’ll be…Pulled sounds so much better, don’t you think? ;)]I’ll repeat my earlier advice. The best thing the smartest and fittest among us can do is build wealth to insulate ourselves from the negative consequences of what’s to come. Don’t fight the elites. Join them. That’s what I plan to do. To keep things interesting, though, I’ll shout, “Impeach Bush!” every now and then. Just for affect.
If you’re bored with this topic, fantasize:
If you weren’t in an office (or wherever you toil) right now, what would you be doing (or want to do)?
Keep it clean!

I’ve been thinking the same thing.
I think if the terrible Senate bills passes, and we are flooded with 193 million immigrants in the next twenty years, it will finally break our entitlement system, but not before it financially devastates the American middle class. I also think a huge underground economy will be created to circumvent the onerous taxes that are sure to come.

Honestly, if I wasn’t at work, I would need to be doing homework. However, I ran ethernet out to my front porch so I can sit out there with my laptop and listen to the nice fountain in our “frog pond” and relax while studying. Or, I might be napping.

If I wasn’t in an office (classroom, really) right now, I’d be driving down to DC for that cup of coffee and nice walk with you, La Shawn! The weather up here (Delaware) is beautiful, too!

Good for you La Shawn.
If I weren’t here I think I would be kayaking with friends down Silver Spring River here in Florida.
… or at a beach resort :).

Thanks for the links La Shawn. I am so disgusted with all of this I don’t even know what to say anymore.
All Americans (black, white and every color in between) who want to sit around and wait for the “gubment” to take care of them would be wise to listen to your words.
Comment by Renee — 05.17.06 @ 10:59 am
That Columbia University study and you as well fail to note the economic impact of illegal immigrants. They are in effect like Wal-Mart. By working for lower wages, they keep the cost of certain goods lower. Imagine if we deported 11m illegals, most of whom work and replaced them with people demanding minimum wage (which may go up if the Dems take the house). Now the cost of that restaurant meal will go up among a host of other things. Now that the cost to the consumer is higher, it is a cascading effect on the economy. The best solution to this problem is to build a big wall and then find a way to phase the people already here into American society. Deportation would be a disaster.

I would take my butt up to Central Park, sit in Sheep’s Meadow…and I’d be smiling SO big BECAUSE I wouldn’t be stuck at my desk reading your blog, getting p*ssed about the Duke case and the constant news coverage of the immigration issue…of course trading stocks is what I REALLY should be doing anyway…shhhh, boss is right next to me…enjoy your day!

Amen to that sista! That is precisely my goal, build and shore up wealth to insulate and prepare for what is to come. I’ve been doing this aggressively over the last year or so. In addition, I am looking to moving out of the L.A. city areas and into more rural/suburban areas, to avoid the potential race riots to come. Ultimately I plan to move out of state.
Your question:
If you weren’t in an office (or wherever you toil) right now, what would you be doing (or want to do)?
I would be at the beach with my kids, not thinking about all the mess going on in the world, just enjoying the company of my wonderful kids.
As usual Miss Barber, I find that you are truly a kindred spirit.

You mean there’s life outside my office?! Our HR staff assured me there was no such thing!
As for the criminals.. I wonder how Bush would respond if this had come up during his 1st term. Would he still be blatantly ignoring the vast majority of (real) Americans? I guess I can only wonder now.

I always figured that the legalization of gay “marriage” would break the back of social security, but it is beginning to appear as if illegal immigration will do so first.
I’m only moderately concerned about my future (also working on building wealth), but I’m worried sick about my kids, particularly my youngest son, who has only a high school diploma. I suspect the job he’s doing for $12/hour will soon be filled by someone willing to do it for minimum wage. I wish I could convince him to go back to school before it’s too late.
As for where I’d rather be, I’m itching for a long Harley ride, but it’s still too cold to be pleasant. Oh goody, and now it’s raining…

I think I’d be at the range. Or the loading bench. Or riding my bike through the woods behind my house. But the Harley and the beach don’t sound too bad, either.

Actually, maybe it’s the USA culture which is going to overwhelm and absorb the Mexican culture.
We’ve been through this before. When the Jews came there were complaints that New York was becoming the “New Jerusalem”, and that “real” New Yorkers were being forced to move out. (At one time there were over a million native Yiddish speakers in the city.)
When the Italians came there were complaints that these dark Sicilian types were bringing the mafia and criminal culture to these shores. Every city had an “unassimilated” little Italy.
The Irish were considered detestable and nobody would hire them except for public jobs (which is why so many ended up as police–the only employer who would have them). They were Catholic as well, and would subvert the culture.
Now we have the Mexicans, who are responsible for 110% of our crime, 110% of our welfare losses, who are going to cost us billions (as if they are contributing nothing in the meantime), etc. etc.
A lot of this is just the usual nativism.
I agree we should control the borders, but the ship isn’t sinking, it isn’t even listing; and the vast majority of those arriving (including an estimated 100,000 illegal Chinese every year) will indeed become hard working decent citizens, and well worth having. (There, I said it–blasphemy, of cousre!

La Shawn: [the fence] “needs to be a serious piece of equipment with electronic capabilities.”
I respectfully disagree. It needs to be exceptionally physically secure.
Electronic surveillence needs to be followed up. Neither party actually wants to do that, or they would be doing it already.
Therefore, put in a physical structure that will slow down the invasion, yell like crazy about the points that get violated, and work on fixing the state of mexico.
Nice burden, huh?

Good stats on the costs of illegals La Shawn. What really infuriates me about the entire illegal immigration issue is not the fact that they are here so much as to the complete arrogance and demands they are making in our country. I lived in Mexico for a couple years and know that some actually believe the SW US is “theirs”, the contempt most Mexicans hold for Americans is tremendous–not to mention racist and hypocritical. The way the Mexicans treat Central Americans making their way up to the US border is repulsive, but they complain about the Minutemen and Nat’l Guard? Unbelievable.
BTW, a councilwoman named Julieta Nuñez in CD Juarez on the El Paso border is preparing to file lawsuits in US Courts to prevent the Guard from patroling. She also said that she’ll contact the local “migrant protection force” to help move the flow to more remote sections of the border.
The possibility of amnesty will only increase the flow. And the worst news is that the current leader in the Mexican Presidential polls is from the PRD platform (Mexican Communist Party).

If . . . What a loaded word “if” is. I would be back in school taking the subjects I want to take instead of those I was “supposed” to take. Instead of paying a portion of the bills for my daughter. It is a beautiful day in Wyoming. The crabapple trees are blooming altho the lilacs have not yet started to open. Here we are upset about $2.64 a gallon for gasoline. Snow plows are working to open the mountain passes. Fish are biting, tho I usually consider a lake “ruined” if there are more than three fishermen.

La Shawn, a new poster here, but I’ve been lurking for a while.
I came across the following article regarding Rove’s visit with House Republicans yesterday to push the Presidents illegal immigration plan.
If what Rep. King paraphrases is true, why doesn’t the administration just purchase airline tickets for the entire 3rd world and be done with it?
Also, didn’t the President swear on a bible last January to uphold the laws of the United States? Or did I miss the part about just enforcing the laws he agrees with.

Here’s a constructive criticism challenge, LaShawn (from somebody who wants a fence and tough enforcement).
Utterly fantastic, beautiful and meaningful defense of Pres. Bush by The Anchoress. I completely agree about Bush, and the excess of conservative desire for Unreal Perfection — yet disagree with Bush on immigration.
In fact, each and every conservative against Bush should be asked — where is your energy on the local Republican Primary, to get a better Republican candidate?
I’m afraid the Personality Bush-hate anti-cult of the media has infected Michelle Malkin & LaShawn Barber (who I read and enjoy and usually agree with), into being too critical of Bush.
Bush, or any “conservative” leader, needs supporters in Congress. The failure of conservative pundits to pressure big-spending Reps is a failure of the Republican “leader” as well as the pundits — and, like most folks, they want to blame Bush instead.
Prof. Bainbridge and Mark Tapscott should be scolded for taking the easy, lazy, “Bush only” approach to gov’t, and not fighting longer and harder in support of “true conservatives” for Congress thru Rep primaries.
Just as the media focuses too much on America (not Darfur, Congo, China, Indonesia), it focuses too much on the President, not enough on the 100 Senators and 435 reps.
Most conservatives who feel betrayed by Bush have betrayed themselves by their own laziness/ busyness in other things.
Thanks again for your heart AND mind.
Please consider re-reading Rerum Novarum (115th anniversary last week).

You’re a long-time reader, Tom, and I appreciate it. But as you well know, my opinions don’t ebb and flow with the tide of the blogosphere. I HATE what Bush is doing on this illegal aliens issue, and that won’t change. Perfection isn’t the standard; common sense is.
