Hot, Hot, Hot View!

The Vent

I still cringe when I see myself on video or hear my voice on audio, but hey, it’s ME. Check out “The View,” conservative style over at Hot Air.

(Tips for next time: Stop talking with the hands and relax the face!)

I had a wonderful time yesterday with Mary Katharine Ham, Michelle Malkin, and Kirsten Powers, a pro-life Democrat, Christian, and one of the nicest pundits I’ve ever met. Conservative women bloggers talking hate mail, politics, and guns. What a blogworld…

Unrelated Update: Check out “White Student Sues For Racial Discrimination.” I blogged about the case a couple of weeks ago, so regular readers will be familiar with the subject. For more info, visit the Center for Individual Rights.

Later (1:53 p.m.)…I wanted to do more blogging today, but I think I’ll call it a week. It’s been a busy one. Have a restful weekend. Thanks for reading LBC.

La Shawn, you did just fine; look forward to your participation in many more Vents and vblog entries. Was glad to find your blog. Certainly agree with you on Hasert; perceived competency is the issue here and he is now ‘damaged goods’ that, by staying, might cost the GOP the House.

wytammic 10.13.06 at 9:33 am

Good morning:) I have not been familiar with your site, but look forward to exploring it. I really enjoyed watching you on Vent this morning. It looked as though the four of you had a great time.

Well, I need to head to work. Hope you have a wonderful day!

PS. I agree with your “view” of the Foley debacle.

Shade 10.13.06 at 9:34 am

Reading lips is a definitely a skill for the well trained. My work computer has no audio, but I’ll check it out at home.

mj 10.13.06 at 9:35 am

Cool! I’ll check it out later.

Matt Teague 10.13.06 at 9:38 am

As a big fan of Hot Air, an avid reader of both your blog and Michelle’s I have to say that was a great segment. I would love to see another feature in this format. As for the Christian Democrat, she seemed very well spoken I have added her to my blogmarks. Seeing yourself on a filmed media is not comfortable for many people, please don’t let that keep you from doing something like this again!

RedBeard 10.13.06 at 10:15 am

What a classy, classy, classy group that is! :-)

Chuck 10.13.06 at 10:19 am

That was great! I hope you ladies do this on a regular basis!

Jay 10.13.06 at 10:22 am

I agree; very classy group (and a far more attractive bunch than “The View” ladies too, I might add). You were excellent. I look forward to more.

Greg Tinti 10.13.06 at 10:28 am

La Shawn: I think we all get like that when we’re not to use to hearing ourselves or seeing ourselves. Don’t worry, I thought you were great. Hopefully this will be a regular feature at Hot Air.

Stephen 10.13.06 at 10:33 am

Hi LaShawn,

I sympathize with your feelings about your voice. I’ve heard my voice on tape and I think I sound like Jerry Lewis after inhaling a balloon full of helium.

I thought you sounded great - very articulate and classy. Hope to see you guest host a Vent of your own someday!

-S.

Heliotrope 10.13.06 at 10:35 am

What a joyful way to start the day!

Ian 10.13.06 at 10:50 am

I don’t think I’ve met a person who likes seeing and hearing themself. I am sure my reaction is worse than you are, I have to turn off the audio and video when I see my self on tape!

You did great! Perhaps you should start video blogging yourself ;)

Ian 10.13.06 at 10:50 am

Oops, meant, reaction is “worse than yours”, not “you are”. My bad.

Corey Cortez 10.13.06 at 10:53 am

Wow! Very Nice work! I hope you do that again! The first one.. well is the first one. It can only get better from here and I love that we are utilizing all sorts of media to get our message out!

Doc 10.13.06 at 10:55 am

‘A Democrat, Christian, and pro-life’…right. That’s like a Jewish Nazi, I guess. Where are the Deitrich Bonhoeffers among us, to call us out of our complacency with politics-as-usual? How in the world can a person call themselves a Christian, and align themselves with the Party of Death?

Lonevoice 10.13.06 at 10:58 am

Very nice!

I thought you did great, as did all the ladies! Intelligent conversation with no grandstanding or shocks statements. Whodathunkit?

Too bad you all can’t get together regularly for this!!

hdw 10.13.06 at 11:28 am

“I thought you sounded great - very articulate and classy.”

My thoughts exactly. Very well done. I’m a big fan of both HotAir and your site.

Randy 10.13.06 at 11:35 am

Hey La Shawn… I loved it. You did just fine and I liked the whole thing. There was some stage floor issues (knowing which camera to look at) but you all did good.

Kathleen 10.13.06 at 11:52 am

Woohoo, LaShawn!! When I saw this morning’s Vent format, I was ecstatic (yeah! Give “The View” some serious competition!) but when I saw you were part of the mix, I really hit the stratosphere in excitement. I am SO GLAD Michelle included you! Your calm, well-thought out, spiritually reasoned view is sorely needed in conservative politics. You go, girl!! You looked and sounded great. Congratulations! I hope we get more of this in the future. God bless you!

Greg 10.13.06 at 12:03 pm

La Shawn,
That was great! Please, please, please keep this up! It definitely has the appeal of a successful project. Don’t know what all of your schedules are like, but you all should do this regularly and cover the issues as an intelligent person’s “The View” or “Coffee Talk” you guys were like budda! I’m getting a little Ferklempt!!!

benm 10.13.06 at 12:08 pm

Good job La Shawn. You are right about, what I think is, political dodge-ball by some Republicans regarding Foley. And your eyes are the same size, I’ll bet Michelle is jealous! ;)

Lori 10.13.06 at 12:19 pm

Hi,

Just caught you on “The Vent” and wanted to let you know I enjoyed it very much. I am new to your blog and have already read several good pieces. I’ll be back!

Mark La Roi 10.13.06 at 12:19 pm

Very cool LaShawn!

TNicohls 10.13.06 at 12:38 pm

Had not heard of you before but I loved your appearance on the VENT hehe Keep it up!!

Shade 10.13.06 at 12:41 pm

Resonding the the unrelated update, in the Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation/Harvard University racial attitudes survey in spring 2001, 85% of blacks stated that merit alone should decide admissions and not race or ethnicity. 3% had no opinion. Why are such surveys rarely mentioned by both liberals and conservative? It seems to me that such a study undermines the generalizations that are commonly promoted about how black people think. Thus they are ignored.

Rajender Razdan 10.13.06 at 12:45 pm

This is my first time on your site. I thought you were terrific on the Hot Air segment which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Sister Toldjah 10.13.06 at 1:30 pm

Can’t watch Flash video here at the 8-5, but I’m sure you did great, LB! I’ll watch it this evening when I get home.

Renee 10.13.06 at 1:41 pm

Just checked out the Vent and I thought it was great. I look forward to the next installment.

Mike B 10.13.06 at 1:55 pm

Hey kiddo, I thought all you ladies did an outstanding job! I would love for this to evolve into a regular feature or even a spot on a network. Keep up the good work, it’s very much appreciated.

Tracey 10.13.06 at 2:08 pm

LaShawn,

Very good job, it was very enjoyable. I can relate to cringing when seeing myself on video or hearing my voice. However, you are easy on the eyes and you have a nice voice; and as several people have noted, articulate and classy. Keep up the good work.

RedBeard 10.13.06 at 2:15 pm

At the very real risk that I might be accused of being a typical guy ;-) I would like to second the comments of others and point out that the four of you are an extremely good looking group, relegating the “View” panel to also-ran status on that standard. :-)

Gayle Miller 10.13.06 at 2:34 pm

One thing this group has that the View lacks - class!

You were all fabulous!

Michele Connole 10.13.06 at 2:38 pm

LaShawn, y’all were fantastic! And you looked great, so don’t even sweat it. I look forward to more from The Vent!!!

Tom Blogical 10.13.06 at 2:39 pm

Great job, Blog Mom. Always remember, if you don’t like how you look or sound on camera, it’s *always* the equipment’s fault! (:-D)

Andy 10.13.06 at 2:39 pm

You guys did great.

I wont be surprised if some station would contract you ladies to compete with The View.

Chip 10.13.06 at 2:41 pm

La Shawn, I wasn’t aware of your site and I just saw the video on MM’s HotAir–I think you and the other ladies were terrific–it’s nice to hear four intelligent women debate issues without resorting to the name calling and rancor so prevalent on many shows like the View for example–keep up the great work and I now added your blog in my bookmarks folder.

Nice job!

Walt Schulte 10.13.06 at 2:50 pm

LaShawn,

I think you did fine! You were right about Hastert. He’s completely incompetent. I know this is irrelevant, but you’re all “easy on the eyes” as well. ;) Keep it up!

Tom Bosee 10.13.06 at 2:56 pm

Y’all passed the audition with flying colors! Now see if you can get Rosie O’Donnell as your first guest; topic: best concealed carry hand bag!

Juliette 10.13.06 at 3:09 pm

Way to go, girl!

Lisa Vernon 10.13.06 at 3:26 pm

Wow, how refreshing was this video segment! Intelligent discourse without talking over one another or screaming. What a concept! I sure hope that you and the others will be able to make time in your busy schedules to do more of these. I’ve been reading your blog for a while and so appreciate your informed and measured thoughts and reflections. And, may I say that I love your hairstyle! I thought you and the others did very well.

njspeer 10.13.06 at 4:21 pm

I think you did great!

Lawrence 10.13.06 at 4:32 pm

I thought you did very well, La Shawn.

This may be your first time in front of the camera, but if you were nervous, it didn’t show.

Tom 10.13.06 at 5:03 pm

You did a great job on the Vent. I really like the format, tho it should be longer.

I do disagree on the Hastert thing somewhat. I think Congress in general tends to turn a blind eye on its members, but if Hastert had done much more in the Foley thing, he’d be called a homophobe or worse. Remember, Republicans are always considered wrong to Democrats and the media no matter what they do. And while Foley seems like a creep, we don’t know that he broke any laws. And there would be very few people left in either house of congress if we tossed out all the creeps.

Laura 10.13.06 at 5:49 pm

Love your blog, and LOVED seeing you on “The Vent”!

I second Lisa Vernon’s comment. It was wonderful to see you all conversing with no over-talking or shouting each other down. What a group of intelligent, classy women! Of course, you’ll never get on network (liberal) tv…

Jim 10.13.06 at 6:13 pm

Superb job, LaShawn. I also must disagree with you though, on the call for Hastert’s resignation.

We’re losing the grip on mandating personal responsibility and we undermine that ideology whenever we censure those who had no direct link to any egregious act. By placing blame on anyone other than Foley, we open the door for anyone to label all members of the party as co-conspirators or accomplices. The parents are just as guilty (or more so) as Hastert if we follow the reasoning behind the call for Hastert’s resignation.

Again, great job on The Vent!

Spunky 10.13.06 at 7:45 pm

Missed The Vent but I think it’s awesome that four women of such intellect and talent can get together and talk. I hope it happens again.

tommy 10.13.06 at 8:14 pm

There was absolutely nothing wrong with your performance on that clip. Great job! I’ve heard your named kicked around the blogosphere, but I didn’t know much about you or your site until I checked out that click and was led here. Your blog looks interesting; I’m adding it to my list of sites to check out regularly. Thanks.

Carol 10.13.06 at 8:26 pm

LaShawn, you are just the cutest thing. I could just pinch you.

And while Foley seems like a creep, we don’t know that he broke any laws.

As a parent, it wouldn’t matter to me whether be broke any laws. Had he acted inappropriately towards either of my children, he would wish to be sent to prison once I was done with him.

Ken 10.13.06 at 11:17 pm

I thought you did great. And I’m going to bookmark your blog now, because of the video!

Carolus 10.13.06 at 11:18 pm

LaShawn,

You came across just fine. Look at it this way, even if you made a goof or a gaffe, it would still be far more intelligent than anything remark ever uttered by Rosie O’Donnell.

My vote for the next video is for you four lovely ladies to be at the gun range. A nice 2nd amendment tribute. Maybe you could even do the Knob Creek (KY) machine gun shoot (held in April and October. They shoot lots of regular guns there too, along with cannons, flamethrowers, RPGs, etc.).

Susannah 10.13.06 at 11:21 pm

Wonderful! It was neat to see so many of my favorite bloggers gathered in one place, talking with one another. How exciting…you did so well, LaShawn! You are very well-spoken. I hope this becomes a regular occurrence.

UNK 10.13.06 at 11:23 pm

Sorry to hear about the hate mail that you and the others receive.

But I think everyone who writes anything these days gets some, although some more than others. I am sort of in the middle so I catch hell from both sides, in addition to my snarkyness sometimes bringing it on.

Just a theory I developed since reading, (skimming actually) your blog, but since white’s don’t challenge blacks because of white guilt and fear of being thought racists, and blacks are afraid to critique fellow blacks, the radical blacks really seem to have a free ride and get to air their views unchallenged.

As a thought experiment, if the situation was reversed say in the 1950s, blacks could not challenge whites (racists or otherwise) and whites could not challenge fellow whites racists such as the KKK or be accused of n-lovers and race traitors.

Gina Cobb 10.14.06 at 4:20 am

You did great and it was wonderful to see you there. The show was terrific.

I thought Michelle Malkin’s and Mary Katherine Ham’s first “View” was great. I’m so glad the format is being continued!

Keep it up! This will be fun to watch.

Robert Tatum 10.14.06 at 5:17 am

LaShawn:

You were just fine, you definitely need to do more of this. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more of you. I read you at least once a day.

Frank Zavisca 10.14.06 at 10:03 am

Great to see four such bright and beautiful women.

I believe the Foley flap is dying a natural media death. No doubt nuclear terror will lead the debate.

Tyrone 10.14.06 at 1:14 pm

LaShawn:

You did fine. The last time I saw you on video was when Cspan taped the Heritage Foundation and BOND’s New Black Vanguard Conference. I think you look pretty delicious on camera if I may say so. Conservative women normally are blessed with beauty and intellect.

Michelle 10.14.06 at 1:16 pm

I thought you did great, LaShawn! I love your blog and I really enjoyed hearing your points of view. It was great to hear and see four of the smartest, classiest ladies in political commentary today discussing their viewpoints so well.

Have a great week!

Andy 10.14.06 at 2:03 pm

Regarding the “White Student Sues For Racial Discrimination”

What about UCLA?

Mr. Buzzcut 10.14.06 at 7:40 pm

Just caught it … Ya did great!

DragonLady 10.14.06 at 9:16 pm

You looked fine! Can’t wait to catch the next one! :-)

Daniel 10.15.06 at 11:19 am

You were great on Hotair! You’ve got a new fan from now on :)
Bets wishes from Germany,
Daniel

Thespis 10.15.06 at 5:57 pm

Great Job on “Vent: The (Conservative) View.

You’re wonderful. Keep up the excellent work.

Marsh Dave 10.16.06 at 2:10 am

You look and sound almost exactly as I imagined you would.

You remind me of a good neighbor - just as you do in your printed words.

Please keep up the good work.

Ted Moore 10.16.06 at 8:12 am

You’all looked nervous and self conscious but sounded just fine. Hope you all keep on venting in anticipation of the day when you’ll be wanted on MSM. Even MSM will try to change their colors about six months from now.

Fred Butler 10.16.06 at 9:12 am

(Tips for next time: Stop talking with the hands and relax the face!)

And move the purse sitting directly behind your head! Of course, its an all gal show, so I should expect that.

Fred

John 10.16.06 at 1:55 pm

“The Vent” was excellent! That was as great a group of commentators that I think could have been put together. We could easily use a half-hour or hour daily show of “The Vent”!

Pamela 10.16.06 at 4:49 pm

La Shawn,

This is the first time I have been on your blog site. I subscribe to Vent and watch the videos on my iPod. I watched the one you were on this morning. I thought “Thank God” for a “sister” being out there in the world of blogging with some moral sense. When I saw the video I immediately did a web search and added your RSS feed to my program. I have read several blog entries and have been very impressed. Keep up the good work.

I agree with you that either Hastert needs to step down or disciplined. I think people forget that this is not the first time he did something questionable when the behavior of someone in Congress was in question. I believe the Representative in Louisiana is named Jefferson. Anyhow he is the fellow that has been accused of accepting $100,000 in bribes and had $90,000 in his freezer. When I believe the Justice Department wanted to do some searches or actually went into his office and retrieved papers Hastert came to his defense. A cool-off period was called between Hastert and the Justice Department. I do not understand all the rules that came into play but that action did not pass the smell test to me. I began to question Hastert’s character at that point. Maybe someone can clarify this issue. I did read that his opponent was endorsed this morning. Hurray.

Andy 10.17.06 at 10:48 am

Saw Michelle & Kirsten on O’Reilly Factor last night. Too bad you weren’t on :( , but then again, the ladies showed how political opposites can have a show that is the View’s comeuppance.

CyberCipher 10.18.06 at 3:58 pm

Hi La Shawn,
You and MKH are new to me, but I am learning rapidly by reading here and over at TownHall. Long time familiar w/Michelle and Kirsten from Fox News and Michelle’s books/blogs. Your “VENT” group is WAY classier than the “VIEW” group. I am Christian, not Democrat or Republican. I love Michelle, but please keep her on a short leash. We don’t want her straying into Ann Coulter territory. I am delighted that the group includes good Christian women like yourself and Kirsten. It is clear that Michelle has a passion for the truth — and that’s a good thing. Keep reminding her that Jesus also taught us to love our enemies and to pray for them as well.

Tami 10.18.06 at 6:27 pm

Hi La Shawn,

You did a wonderful job here! Of course, now I’m longing to see more of you 4 ladies in this round-table format. I hope that we get to see more of you as a group, and I definitely hope that this experience caused you to give some more thought to developing your on video blog! As superficial as it sounds, we all enjoy watching beautiful, intelligent, and well-spoken people on video. You have a gift that is all three of those things, and I’m looking forward to seeing more!

Lyle 10.21.06 at 8:49 pm

Thank you, La Shawn. You are intelligent, well spoken, and beautiful. You look and sound great on video. I will be a regular to your blog. Blessing from Canada.
