Seasalt said: "He [Cho] was ready to die."

Yes, and there was no one on that campus with the tools needed to accomodate his desire prior to his mass murder spree.

Another point missed via liberal-think.

If only everyone on Va Tech campus had been armed! They could have had a nice big shoot-out and maybe more people could have been killed. Then we could have had more martyrs in heaven, eh?

Yeah, I can just see it, Cho enters and starts shooting, everyone pulls a gun and shoots back. He runs into the hall, being persued by armed students. Other armed students run out of other classes. Which one is the "good guy"? Which one is the "bad guy"? Aw, heck, just shoot at everyone and let God find his own, eh?

Yeah, what a fine idea.

Oh, wait, you think that Cho--a man with paranoid schizophrenia--would have been deterred by the thought that someone else might have been armed? Um. He was suicidal, get it? He was ready to die.

Any more bankrupt ideas from the lunatic fringe?

Am a believer in the 2nd amendment. Also support concealed carry. Also believe that people who are afraid of firearms should not own them.

The most obvious lesson from all of this is that the same people who want to excuse criminal behavior are the most anxious to disarm us.

Support crime = Disarm law abiding citizens

Hate living in a world where weapons are necessary, but wishfill thinking kills innocents.

Just to keep this in context, those who want to forgive active criminals are those who cause crime rates to be so serious in inter cities.

I also miss the spell checker La Shawn, but continue to love what your blog tries to achieve.

Why are we so eager to give up our freedoms in this country?

When I was living overseas, I saw the economic and social degradation that flowed from abridging private property rights and was shocked upon my return to discover the degree to which we have destroyed those ights here in the US though eminent domain, burdensome regulation and taxes, or even through smoking bans.

Our Founding Fathers understood that private property rights were sacred and fundamental to a decent society.

Too many people in this country are tyrants about imposing their oh-so-aesthetic sensibilities upon others.

Most states that authorize concealed carry permits are now recognizing the permits from other states. My Florida carry permit is valid in all the states through which I travel regularly.

Interestingly, but not at all surprisingly, the right to carry is abridged in the worst of the "blue" states, the ones where malignant liberalism runs the show. If you want to exercise your right to self-defense, stay away from places like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, etc.

Chief RZ~

I was doing a little research into Texas' CHL law on the DPS website, and it had a note about Nevada (If I recall correctly) not recognizing Texas' CHL license. I would then assume that any other state which allows concealed carry would allow someone licensed in another state to also carry there. But, if you have a CHL/CCW from any state, I guess the smart thing to do would be to check things out before traveling with your firearm out of state.

A brief review of the postings appears to support law abiding citizens -- The good guys -- the option of defending themselves from attack with similar weapons! I wonder how this may play nationally, even though it is a state's right's issue. Virginia has the ability to deny weapons to non-Virginians, do they not? Or would that be "illegal discrimination" ?

Redbeard;

It is almost as if we pathologize horrific behavior because "folks wouldn't do bad things if they weren't sick" and thus we render a defacto determination of mental illness.

Yet, I often wonder how many thousands of choices along the way lead up to moments of cascading evil.

I know folks who have consistently made bad choices from youth on. Ultimately, the cumulative effect of those choices overwhelms them, but to what degree are the countless decisions along the way responsible for the crescendo of chaos.

I'm with you, Jan. Bad behavior is bad behavior, and cannot be excused in any way, including the weepy touchy-feely excuses that blame society, parents, or loopy brains.

I'm sick to death of hearing about people found not guilty by reason of mental defect. That sounds like the crime is being erased somehow. Nuts to that. Why not guilty by reason of mental defect?

I was just reading about the horrific Shanda Sharer and Shannon Christian murders and it is slamming all over me that evil exists in the world.

I would venture to say that malignant envy is at the root of both murders.

Yet, they defy anything that I can grab hold of.

Those who wish to sympathize with these acts of brutality need to imagine their child having their mouths washed out with cleaning fluid after being sexually, emotionally, and physically brutalized for two days. Alessandra, where are you????

Having been robbed this week which gave me an unparalleled opportunity to interview several policeman yet again, I can only say that we are headed down a horrific trajectory in which so much of the sympathy seems to ultimately reside with those who prey upon the innocent. The police tell me that their hands are tied and that political correctness run amuk means that communities will be preyed upon by the worst among us. Note: this is the ninth crime my family has been subjected to in sixteen months... including the fact that my eight month pregnant daughter was hit by an intoxicated unlicensed uninsured individual who spoke not a word of English...while she gave birth to her baby a month early IN HER CAR after being hit. Another child had a car drive up through her yard and slam into a tree yards away from her bedroom after smashing into her car...Add to this a sixteen year old that was brutally attacked in Knoxville, Tennessee and you get the picture.

I have had enough excuses!

Ladybug,

I was pretty aware that no one could put a gun in my hand by force. As far as Switzerland goes, I don't know that it's the presence of guns that makes it a safe country or the homogeneous population. I'm not for taking anyone's rights away. I'm just not down with fear.

Angel~

The beauty of America is that it's YOUR CHOICE to arm yourself. No one will force you, as is required by law in Switzerland, for every head of household to have a firearm in their home. It might be noted, though, that crime rates are extremely low in that nation.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not. I guess I just don't get it. Either I'm stupid or I don't believe that the potential of something happening to me is worth bringing a dangerous weapon into my house.

That English Department front page quote is from the Convocation: those are the words of VT's "poet in residence", who can now been seen in the clips shouting "We are Virginia Tech". I was sickened as I listened to her spew her hatred when she SHOULD have been memorializing the slain.
