40 Years Alive!

by La Shawn on May 5, 2007

in Me, Me, Me

Tuesday, May 8: Thanks very much for the well wishes, everyone! I appreciate the comments, e-mails, and gifts. It’s easy to look at a birthday as a “new beginning,” especially a “milestone” like 40, but I’m getting my second wind. My life has changed significantly in the last 10 years, and I hope the next ten will be even better. What next, God?

Thanks, again!
——————————————————————————-
40th birthdayToday I’m 40! Whoa…

I’m thinking only happy thoughts today. That means NO politics. No news. No surfing. Just hanging out with family and friends, celebrating my 40th year on the planet. It will be a happy day.

My before-I-turn-40-goal from last year was to have a book deal by now. You know, I’d probably have one if I weren’t such a procrastinator and bad prioritizer. I’m focused on maintaining and acquiring new consulting work (must come first – bills, bills, bills!), keeping up with this blog, and trying to crank out columns. There are ready, willing, and able folks waiting for me to put pen to paper and send a proposal.

I don't care what you say about me. Just spell my name right! To make it so, I’ll have to let something go. Temporarily. Or else give up sleep. Or my offline life.

Wish me luck!

Happy birthday to me! And thanks for reading LBC. And the other blog. :D

Happy Birthday, La Shawn! I turn 30 later this month and I confess I just get more excited about life every year. I think about what God has done in my life in the last ten years and I am amazed. I can’t wait to see what blessings He has in store for me in the next ten.

Here’s to you, La Shawn, happy birthday! May you know the excitement in life that only a child of God knows!

Erbo 05.05.07 at 1:53 am

Happy birthday, La Shawn! Long life and much happiness to you…and I’m already looking forward to seeing you in person when your book tour comes through Denver. :-)

Finn 05.05.07 at 1:53 am

Happy Birthday, and best wishes in all your endeavors.

Sometimes the time left can seem short, and we are pressed. But also consider, that each day we age brings us closer to the house of God, where he stands with door open, arms outstretched saying, “Hey, bout time you arrived.”

So we can take joy in the now, but also, delight in the distance of journey and know that a true home awaits. The billions who have walked before watch, and wait, laughing with excitement at our progress.

“Would you like to see her, and read her writing?” says Jesus, perhaps, to someone you love who is there with him, and they smile, and nod, reading over your shoulder for a while, before the veil is drawn and they join the others for dinner with God.

We are never alone.

Stay busy, and keep love in your heart.

memomachine 05.05.07 at 3:20 pm

Hmmmm.

Congrats!!

You know when I was 15 years old it seemed like it was taking an eternity to reach 18. And that was only 3 years. But now I look back through life from the exalted vantage point of 43 and I can’t for the life of me remember what the heck I did for the last 20 years. It seems like only yesterday I was 23 and hanging out with my friends.

Now an eye-blink later and they’ve all married, got kids and mortgages. I’ve progressed in my career and done fairly well.

But how did I get here? I can’t be this old. I was 23 only yesterday!

Isn’t it strange?

batyah 05.05.07 at 3:40 pm

Happy Birthday, LaShawn! I’ll leave you with a Jewish blessing: “May you live to be 120,” or the more playful “May you live to 100 like 20.” (You choose.)

:-)

Meg 05.05.07 at 3:42 pm

Thanks for your clear and articulate words. Many happy days ahead…odat.
Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday!!

Don’t worry about not busting out a book before today….I swore that I’d be out of school before I turned 40; having that stroke last year put me a year behind graduation and even though I’ll be turning 40 in October, I still have another year to go until I get my BSEE.

Cindy Swanson 05.05.07 at 6:39 pm

Warmest wishes for a happy and blessed 40th!

Happy Birthday, dear Lady! I’m facing my 60th this year. They tell me “60″ is the “new 40″. Why doesn’t that make me feel 40 again?

Sigh…:-(

Happy Birthday! I have the same before 40 goal, but I have quite a few less people who know who I am, making book proposals a tad more difficult. We’ll see. There is so much junk on the market, it makes rejections tres frustrating!

Kathleen 05.08.07 at 1:32 am

I’m late coming to this, LaShawn, but I wish you all God’s blessings and I hope you had a very good birthday. May the Lord keep you in His loving care and enrich your life with all good things. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of thee…” Happy Belated Birthday! You look about 27 years old so I wouldn’t get too tied up in knots about turning 40! I’m turning 65 in July and it isn’t bothering me all that much, other than a certain level of irritation at a few achey joints and such.

In any event, belatedly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY lovely lady and thank you for informing me, amusing me, and elevating my thought processes in the years since I discovered your site! You are remarkable and a gift to those of us who are fortunate enough to visit with you daily.

Jay Flemma 05.08.07 at 9:33 pm

Happy 40th!!! My mom, who loves your column, downright squealed with delight when she learned you and she have the same birthday!

Gayle Miller 05.09.07 at 5:01 pm

My cat Sam turned 6 on May 5th! He looks great as well!
