Driving in D.C. is the pits, and I avoid it whenever possible. This morning I had to run some errands that required me to drive. So I’m driving around the city, trying to dodge road-ragers and listening to the Chris Core show on WMAL. The topic was illegal “immigration,†a major issue in Northern Virginia. People called in with stories like these:
— A guy went out to buy his mother some flowers the other day, and he was afraid to go in the store because a crowd of illegal aliens — men — was standing in front of it. They likely were waiting for law-breaking companies to pick them up for “day†work. He says it’s out of control where he lives.
— People living in neighborhoods with $400,000 houses are having the same issues as people living in lower priced housing markets. Illegal aliens are moving in and cramming 20 or more people into single-family units, and they park and drop trash all over the place. Hispanic owners rent out expensive houses to illegal aliens, who get kicked out because they can’t pay the rent. The owners end up dumping their furniture — junk — on the curb.
And the homeowners associations are a collective joke. The rules, which address acceptable paint colors and shrubbery, are hopelessly out of date and useless. They were written for a different time and for people who shared the same culture.
— A Republican called in to say her Democratic friends used to accuse her of being a racist when she’d complain about illegal “immigration.” She’d tell them something like, “You just wait until it happens to you. Then you’ll be singing a different tune.†Lo and behold, they are singing a different tune. Some of her left-leaning friends are living in those half-a-million-dollar housing developments, and you know what they’ve discovered? Not all cultural differences are good. There are a lot of bad and harmful habits practiced by other cultures that are unacceptable to us.
For example, piling 20 people into a single-family house isn’t wrong per se, but in the U.S., it’s unusual. Nobody I know wants to live next door to a house with 20 grown men, most or all of whom are “undocumented†and have no interest whatsoever in conforming to the neighborhood or the country.
Those same open-borders liberals who called pro-enforcement folks xenophobes and racists are slowly realizing that cultural and skin color diversity ain’t as cool as Hollywood, ad executives, and TV writers make it seem.
I am convinced that “celebrate diversity†types are “celebrate diversity†types precisely because they don’t live around people whose diverse habits lower property values and diminish neighborhoods and schools. They live in high-priced (houses cost millions), homogenous (read: white), locked down communities where the only hispanics they see are low-paid day workers who definitely don’t live there.
To all you law-abiding, pro-enforcement Americans dealing with the scourge of illegal “immigration,†especially those who can’t afford to live in gated communities, you have my sympathy.
Open-borders liberal types, especially those quick to preach diversity and call anyone who disagrees a racist, don’t have my sympathy. I’m glad this is happening to you. I’m overjoyed that illegal aliens are ruining your neighborhoods and schools. I’m ecstatic that you have to worry about what those 20 “undocumented†men living next door might do to your daughters. I hope the mere thought keeps you awake at night.
