Way back when Netscape, Netscape & Prodigy were kings of the Internet and Internet Explorer was a buggy beta (IOW 1994 ~ 1996), Todd was “blogging” on Compuserve about how HDD capacity would expand (Moore’s Law) until one could tote their entire collection. With Compuserve, he launched an interactive program that would allow people to download his entire catalog of music and create all sorts of new music. I never got to check it out, beyond the freebie samples, because there was a $10/month subscription — way out of my discretionary budget at the time.

In any case, TR was way ahead of his time in wanting to make his music freely available without label control.

Wow, you’ve gotta admire him because he’s one of the lucky ones who made a mint in the last century from more alternative type of music, and now he’s using his brain and privileged position to think about the music industry and sort of “help” those coming up after him.

Byrne’s one of my favorites. Seen him live several times and he puts on a darn good show. I’ve blogged him up quite a bit on my site, in particular related to his own blog. He’s definitely a bit of a wonk when it comes to the music biz information and I truly appreciate how he’s coming to the table with researched ideas and opinions as opposed to taking one side or another in a rather heated, dichotomous debate.

Now if we can only get him back into the studio to record a new record…!
