Thanks for the Ride, Readers

in General

booksGlenn “Instapundit” Reynold’s linked to yesterday’s post about synesthesia, which brought the kind of traffic this blog hasn’t seen in many months. Thanks for the ride, readers.

My excuse reason for not updating the blog as often as I used to invariably shifts from blogging for clients to looking for more clients to pitching article ideas to print publications and off-blog sites. Round and round and round she goes. Where she stops? Who’s to say?

I found yet another reason to not update the blog as much as I used to. I’m trying to raise my writing career to new levels. Yes, that means books. I’m going through an exciting time of boldness, exploration, and discovery, and this is a feeling I’d wish on my worst enemies. Should’ve done this long time ago.

I’ve got something floating around, and I hope to be more specific about what the thing is in the near future. I can’t wait until it comes to fruition so I can blog about it.

I know you miss my political prose, and in many ways, I’m sorry about that. (FYI, new visitors, I used to be a fairly popular political blogger.) But there’s good news! Political blogging shall return, although briefly. A second project I’m brainstorming as we speak will deal with an aspect of the conservative blogosphere. Can’t be more specific. It’s a wonderful project, and I can’t wait to start pitching it. Developing the pitch will require most of my “spare” time, which means infrequent blog updates. You see, if I can’t write what I consider meaningful posts (more than a paragraph or two, and with some substance), I don’t see the point of updating. And I won’t update just for the sake of it. Not my style.

Just wanted to say THANKS. I really do appreciate you. Your readership is still a surprise to me, even after four years, and a blessing.

Are you trying to raise your game/career to a new level? Do share!

As always, check back for updates! :)

Update (5/30): Thanks for the kind words via comments and e-mail. Very uplifting. I’m en route “home” to Carolina for a little R&R. Rest easy, everybody.

PS: Next week I’ll blog about the recent California Supreme Court decision (PDF), so read up!

I can understand where you’re coming from. I’m working on bringing my writing and creativity to a new level too. I’m trying to get some new freelance gigs, finishing up some feature screenplays so I can submit them to an agent and producing a short science fiction film. It’s exciting and challenging but I’m enjoying the ride.

p.s. Reading your blog has been very encouraging to me. Once again, I’m glad that you switched your main focus away from politics. Not that I don’t enjoy politics, but I like where your writing is going.

You’ve just made my year, girlfriend! Many blessings to you.

You know Churchill’s statement on writing books:

Uh oh.

You know Churchill’s statement on authoring books:
“Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement; then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him out to the public.”

I’m sure you’ll do well and I’m glad you’ll be returning to political blogging (how can you resist given how crazy things have become?)

La Shawn,

I am glad that you are enjoying your new writing topics! Take advice from a (still) long-time reader: Write about what you find interesting and don’t worry about pleasing others.

As for your question about raising my game/career to a new level, I have been inspired by my wife (who is working on a BA in Mathematics and will soon start upper-level mathematics courses) to return to school this summer and pursue a Master of Science in Mathematics. Presently I am a mathematics/physics teacher in a private school and do not make enough to support my family without working a second part-time job. Once I have another seven semester hours of graduate-level mathematics I can start teaching at a local community college.

Both my wife and I have a dream of returning to her home country in Africa and teaching there. Both of the degrees that we are working on will help realize that dream.

I understand where you’re coming from, as well. I’m quitting teaching to become a writer full time. I have a blog, and I’m working on a book. It’s scary and exciting all at the same time. My only advice is to keep following your heart. If God’s guiding it, you have nothing to worry about.

La Shawn, I do sometimes miss your political blogging…but I’m thrilled for you at the new vistas that are opening up. Take advantage of this spurt of energy and drive, and pursue your dreams happily!

I am leaving childcare management. I am open to just about anything, but I am looking into possibilities of an Internet based business.

I have been reading your blog since I discovered it in late 2005. I miss your political blogging, but I do enjoy your current blog emphasis on music, faith and culture.

My husband raves about your blog. He enjoys it so much. I’m a new fan myself. I cannot wait to hear what God will do. It’s always a little scary to embark on a new adventure, but it’s very exciting too.

I’ve recently started blogging myself. I love to write, and I aspire to become a voice in the darkness.

Carlotta 05.30.08 at 3:51 pm

Yes La Shawn, I have missed your political blogging. So much so that I had to actually venture out and start doing it on my website! That was different writing for me, and if anyone who’s read it will tell you that they wish you hadn’t stopped your political blogging for MY sake!

I’m one of your readers who does understand what you’re doing. A writer’s got to do what they gotta do! Just praying for your continued success!

Hey, by the way. You read where the youngest Hanson brother had his first baby? A baby boy? I know you are a Hanson fan…just thought I’d share that with you!

Sounds like a fun ride for you. I was contacted by a publisher 2 weeks ago and asked to allow them to publish one of my pieces from my blog. I was quite excited as I have not been able to get anything published except a picture of my cat. Today I learned my piece is not to be published. Oh well, I’ll keep working on it.

All the best to you.

OK!

My golf game is about to explode (in a good way), and the golf swing is something I’d actually like to teach someday. I’m off to a tournament next week and I think I’ll make a splash there. Wish me luck! :-)

For now, I’ll continue my quest to be a Personal Trainer. I’ve been doing a routine that’s gotten me into better physical shape(fat mass, muscle mass, conditioning) now at 41 than when I was in high school. I’m still plugging away at school, but I’m making huge progress towards my goal of dual Associates Degrees in Sports Management and Exercise Science. I made the decision 2 years ago to get out of the IT industry and get into the fitness industry, and so far I’m ahead of schedule.

Yea me! ;-)

I’m trying to do the best job where I am, and hope that one day someone successful will ask me to work with them because they’ve heard or seen me do good work. I have a feeling that will happen.

I like reading your writing, so I don’t care about the political absence. I’d be more interested in your views about various things, not just music :D

Brett 06.01.08 at 5:40 am

Keep the faith my friend. It’s always a scary thing moving on to new stuff. I’m getting ready to retire after 21 years in the Air Force. For the last year the thought of what I’m going to do next kept me awake at nights. Had horrible visions of my family living in a car and eating out of trash cans :-(

I’ve made up my mind to (gulp) go into business for myself as a consultant. So I’m felling you on that one Ma’am.

Thank you for all your wonderful posts and insights.

LaShawn, I think I’ve read your blog from Day One!! Always love reading it, no matter which direction it takes!!! Hey, your idea of a shallow post is hugely substantive to me. Ha.

I’m still blogging, too (eight years!), and am about to add another blog to the mix. A more focused one, for Boomers who still find themselves with unmet goals and unfulfilled dreams. Not quite up yet, but it will be found at http://www.lateboomer.net.

And, I’ve got an agent for my first novel! That’s exciting. Now, on to the second!!!

Best wishes on all your projects!

LaShawn, Please, please blog about politics again!!!

LaShawn:

Good luck to you. I hope you are successful in your endeavors.

Bucktowndusty 06.09.08 at 11:07 pm

I’ll say it again LaShawn (until I think you’ve heard me), get the books “Aiming at Amazon” and “Perfect Pages,” and get to being published already!!!!!

Rock on
Buck
