Herndon Shuts Down Day Labor Center

*** Scroll down for updates ***

The town of Herndon in Northern Virginia has decided to shut down its controversial day labor center rather than allow illegal aliens to use it. Bravo. (Source)

Brief history for those who haven’t followed the story: As they often do in too many cities and towns across the country, illegal aliens looking for work in the Herndon area began congregating at a local 7-11 store and on citizens’ property, making a nuisance of themselves. Two years ago, the town council thought it would be a good idea to use public funds to provide a place where these criminals and their criminal employers could meet up to engage in activity in direct violation of federal law.

Outrage doesn’t begin to describe Herndon’s or my reaction to the day labor center. The people booted out the mayor and other bums who voted to build it. But that didn’t end the matter. Even before the center opened, there’s been a lot of back and forth over who should be allowed to use it. A shameless illegal alien employer named Stephen A. Thomas had the nerve to cite a First Amendment right to illegally solicit workers at the center.

A circuit court judge ruled in Thomas’s favor. Illegal aliens must be allowed access to the day labor center. Which means employers are free to illegally solicit workers.

The new pro-immigration enforcement mayor, Stephen DeBenedittis, and the town council will close down the center rather than comply with the stupid ruling. Again, bravo. DeBenedittis didn’t want to break his campaign promise. A politician keeping a promise. Breathe in the fresh air, people! This is a rarity.

Of Birthrights and Books

by La Shawn on September 4, 2007

in Columns, Duke Rape Case, Illegal Aliens

Now that states and locals are passing laws in an attempt to alleviate some of the damage of illegal immigration, the feds must do two things: 1) enforce federal immigration laws on the books instead of writing new ones to give amnesty and citizenship to illegal aliens; and 2) end birthright citizenship. See my latest Washington Examiner column, End Birthright Citizenship.

On a Duke case-related note, I must give a big shout-out to Michael Gaynor, lawyer and columnist, for his shout-out to me and for “scolding” Stuart Taylor and KC Johnson for not mentioning me in their new book, Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case. ;)

The fools among us…

A three-judge panel of an appeals court in Kansas just held that an illegal alien’s “ongoing presence in the United States in and of itself is not a crime” unless the illegal alien reentered the country after a previous deportation. (Source)

Can you believe it? Entering the U.S. in violation of the law is illegal. Being in the U.S. in violation of the law may not be illegal. How and under what condition could that ever make sense? Isn’t it common sense that an illegal alien, by virtue of breaking the law, is a criminal? That’s why he’s called an illegal alien. His mere presence inside these borders makes him an outlaw.

But I’m jumping the border…I mean, the gun. The facts:

Some drug-dealing moron named Nicholas Martinez had his kid deliver drugs to an undercover cop (rotten luck!). He was arrested and charged with the sale of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, endangering a child, theft, and unlawful possession of an identification card. Under a plea agreement, he pled to possession and endangering a child.

Incredibly, the district court was going to give him probation — as was warranted under the sentencing guidelines — instead of throwing his sorry butt in jail. But there was a problem. The judge said (emphasis added):

burn foreverRemember the hispanic thug who killed three people and injured one a couple of weeks ago? I told you last week that Jose Carranza was an illegal alien with a rap sheet.

Check out this blood pressure-raising revelation: local law enforcement didn’t report Carranza to Immigration and Customs Enforcement when they first arrested his sorry ***, despite pending charges on aggravated sexual assault of a child. The feds had never heard of him. From the AP (emphases added):

Mr. Carranza [Mr. Get a load of that...] had been free after posting a bond of $5,000 when the shootings occurred, but immigration officials say he may never have returned to the streets had local authorities contacted them after his first felony arrest in October 2006.

“We certainly would have been inclined to place him in a removal proceeding, however we came across him,” said Marc Raimondi, spokesman for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Given that he is alleged to have committed a very serious offense against a child, that would have put him at the top of our list.”

New Jersey is among the places where local authorities aren’t required to check the immigration status of someone arrested, and some critics want that changed.

And George Bush wants to give millions of these people a free ride to citizenship. It’s a good thing states and locals are empowering their law enforcement officers to take up the federal government’s slack. Perhaps this high-profile Newark death-by-illegal-alien tragedy will turn up the heat under the cauldron of the so-called crackdown on illegal “immigration.” Won’t believe it until I see it, though.

More from Michelle Malkin here and here.

Update (8/15): I don’t like Newt Gingrich. He’s a man of low character. But right now, he and Tom Tancredo are among the only Republicans saying things I want to hear, so I’m linking to “Enough is Enough.” An excerpt:

There is a war here at home, and it is even more deadly than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Far more Americans are being killed by violent, evil people here in America than in our official military “combat zones” overseas.

The truth is, all too many Americans are being killed. But what is so completely senseless is having the lives of three young, achieving students cut brutally short by someone who not only should not have been in the United States in the first place but also, after two previous arrests for violence, should not have been on the streets. Instead, the suspected killer should have been in jail awaiting trial, sentencing, prison and eventual deportation.

Another case in point: Authorities are now seeking an additional suspect in the Newark killings — yet another suspected illegal alien.

Thanks to the U.S.’s immigration non-enforcement policy as it relates to Central Americans, not to mention its abdication of the duty to protect us from invasion at home, my support for the war in Iraq has waned considerably.

“Lots of folks are asking about the accused killer in the Newark execution-style murders of four young students. Yes, he’s here illegally according to media and law enforcement officials and he just pleaded not guilty this morning. According to a story in the LA Daily News, an hispanic gang has made it known that it targets blacks. Nothing new here. See this post for a link to a so-called hate crimes report for Los Angeles County. More links in yesterday’s post.

An excerpt from the article:

Since July 2006 there have been 12 shootings targeting Canoga Park blacks. Following two recent attacks, police have stepped up warnings to African-Americans to be wary of Canoga Park Alabama.

Some blacks in the community, as well as educators working with African-American students, said they have felt the wrath of the gang’s racist campaign of violence firsthand. But other blacks paint a more idyllic picture of Canoga Park, one that helped it become the first Los Angeles community to win the All-America honor in the award’s 58-year history.

Once a predominately white community, today Canoga Park is about 50 percent Latino, 28 percent white, 15 percent Asian and 4 percent black, according to a 2005 American Community Survey listed in a California State University, Northridge, report.

Although police can’t pinpoint why “CPA” has focused on blacks, one possibility is street culture emulating prison life, where black and Latino inmates have repeatedly clashed as they align themselves along racial lines.

Yeah, this is really good news, isn’t it? Celebrate diversity! :D

Barack Obama“Lawlessness is lawlessness. Anarchy is anarchy is anarchy. Neither race nor color nor frustration is an excuse for either lawlessness or anarchy.”Justice Thurgood Marshall

To be competitive with Hillary Clinton, Barack “He speaks so well!” Obama will have to pander to Hispanics, including illegal aliens. He has to align with racialist groups like National Council of La Raza and compare black Americans’ struggle to be treated like first class citizens with illegal aliens’ “struggle” to guilt-trip our government into exempting them from the law.

According to illegal aliens’ theory of civil rights, it is racist for a sovereign country to set its own immigration policy. Foreigners ought to have the right to come and go at will, and whatever rights citizens and legal aliens have should be subjugated to theirs. Illegals have a “right” to benefit from America’s generosity (and stupidity), while those who follow the rules just have to grin, bear it, pay the bills, and shut the heck up.

Anyway, thought I’d share:

Mr. Obama’s message of a shared black-Latino struggle may strike a chord with political activists, but could ring hollow with core Latino voters.

“The Hispanic and black elites may be singing ‘Kumbaya’ together. But at the neighborhood level, they’re duking it out,” says Paula McClain, a Duke University political scientist who studies black-Latino relations. “Obama needs to understand the nuance and not assume a broad-brush coalition” between them.

Ms. McClain and other academics say Hispanics have negative stereotypical views of blacks. Generally, Hispanics feel they share more in common with whites than blacks, says Ms. McClain. “In a primary contest, one has to wonder how a Latino electorate will feel about voting for a black person.”

Good luck with all that.

social security cardI dared not believe my eyes when I read this:

“Employers across the country are preparing to fire workers with questionable Social Security numbers to avoid getting snagged in a Bush administration crackdown on illegal immigrants…The Department of Homeland Security is expected to make public soon new rules for employers notified when their worker’s name or Social Security number was flagged by the Social Security Administration.” (Source)

So George Bush’s mega-billion-dollar agency is, at long last, doing something useful.

According to the article, employees with “questionable” Social Security numbers will have 60 days after notification to resolve the issue. If they can’t, employers must fire them or face fines ranging from $250 to $10,000 per illegal.

To get a handle on illegal “immigration,” we must go to the main source of the problem. I’ve ranted often enough about illegal aliens on this blog, but now’s the time to focus on businesses and individuals who hire illegal aliens.

If the executive branch does its job and actually enforces immigration laws, it would go a long way toward stemming the tide of foreigners crossing the border or overstaying visas, if the effort is combined with cutting off welfare to non-citizens. (No welfare for legal residents, either.) With no means of support, perhaps they’ll go home and try to return the legal way.

One can only hope.

Tuesday, July 31: A response from PRCalDude:

“I’ve debated illegals online about the fact that they claim to be Christian yet violate our laws to be here. They see no problem with this because they are Roman Catholic and they don’t know the Bible. When I refer to Romans 13, they have never read it. In the Roman Church, the authority of the Pope and the Magisterium comes before the authority of Scripture. Therefore, when Cardinal Mahony and Roman clergy in Mexico tell them it’s alright to come here, they take that as ‘The Word of God’ rather than Romans 13.

“I’d like to add that for this reason, some churches won’t even admit illegal immigrants into their congregation. The Orthodox Presbyterian Church came out with this ruling on the subject [PDF document] which basically stated that they were not admissible for their failure to obey the ruling authorities. Then there is this take from De Regno Christi:

“‘President Bush has secured his legacy. The promise of immigration reform has degenerated into amnesty. How should Christians think about the issue?’

“This is an excerpt from the Understanding the Times Committee Report to the Reformed Presbyterian Synod in 2006. The controversial report was received as information. I am the author:

Wars and Rumors of War: Border Security

While American soldiers are fighting in the Middle East, and army of illegal immigrants is invading the homeland. Of course, the invasion of our southern border is not a military conquest but it does have grave cultural and economic implications. The RPC recognizes the moral dilemma involved in the discussion.

First, as Christians, we must remember that we were strangers who dwelt in Egypt. When Israel inherited the land of promise, they were called upon to remember this history of subjection when dealing with aliens in their midst. As such, we should be tenderhearted to those in need and show liberality toward those who seek refuge.

Yet, our sympathy is moderated by the unwillingness of illegal immigrants to show respect toward the American system of ordered liberty. Radical leaders of the pro-immigration movement speak of reclaiming the southwest for Mexico. Thus, as millions of illegal aliens cross the border under the flag of Mexico, the question is not how can we deal mercifully with needy refugees, but rather how can the United States defend its historic, cultural, and linguistic heritage? The moral law of God maintains the individuals inherent right to self-defense. Do nations and cultures have no such right? Such a conclusion would appear absurd.

“A year later, I say amen.

“Unfortunately, even in Reformed circles, there is very little Biblical thinking on the matter.”

stop sign11:03 a.m. PDT: In my last Townhall column, I mentioned Georgia’s new immigration enforcement laws, which purportedly were enacted to curb illegal “immigration.”

That state’s illegal alien population reportedly doubled between 2000 and 2005. Overwhelmed by non-assimilating, non-English speaking foreigners, Georgians have chosen to deal with the glut themselves.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that drivers who can’t show proof of residency (with a valid Georgia driver’s license or state ID) cannot register cars. The new law went into effect on July 1. From the article:

If [car dealers and tag services] have built their business on people who are here illegally, I’m sorry, but at some point they had to realize that was not going to continue,” Rogers said.

The license plate law closes a window that gave motorists 30 days to get Georgia driver’s licenses after moving to the state. In the interim, a driver could register a car with an out-of-state or international license.

Also effective July 1 was a separate, 2006 law requiring increased verification of legal status in Georgia for a variety of other purposes, including to work in some jobs or qualify for welfare.

While no one knows how many illegal immigrants are in Georgia, a government estimate put the number at about 470,000. Nationally, most illegal immigrants are from Mexico, followed by El Salvador, Guatemala, India and China, according to a 2005 Department of Homeland Security report.

Genao, 34, has a green card and has lived in the United States eight years. If business doesn’t pick up, he might return to his native Dominican Republic to tend to a car dealership there.

Adiós!

1:17 p.m. PDT: This report should surprise no one. Anyone with half a brain can figure out that if Central Americans are crossing the southern border with ease, Muslim terrorists can and have been doing the same thing.

In related news:

The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the United States.

The declassified key findings, released Tuesday, laid out a range of dangers — from al-Qaida to Lebanese Hezbollah to non-Muslim radical groups — that pose a “persistent and evolving threat” to the country over the next three years. As expected, however, the findings focus most of their attention on the gravest terror problem: Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network.

The report makes clear that al-Qaida in Iraq, which has not yet posed a direct threat to U.S. soil, could become a problem here.

Let’s link it up: Al-Qaida likely will use or is using smugglers to import Muslim terrorists into the United States. But the man in the White House doesn’t want to build a fence or install more agents on the border or enforce current immigration laws or allow profiling. Instead, he wants Congress to write new laws to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and encourage more to flood the country. And he pays lip service to border security. I can’t plead ignorance or drunkenness. When I voted for Bush the second time, I knew his true position on border enforcement (as opposed to his sound bites), but I certainly wasn’t voting for John Kerry.

Fighting the so-called war on terror and securing the southern border are forever linked, despite what politicians say. American men and woman are dying in the Middle East for “democracy,” while the enemy sneaks in the back door here at home.

I say we need to resurrect the policy of internment.

illegal aliensLast month, President George W. Bush’s amnesty-for-illegal-aliens bill died a deserved death in the U.S. Senate.

Had the bill become law, it would have paved the way for millions of illegal immigrants — lawbreakers — to become U.S. citizens, jumping ahead of those who’ve spent years legally waiting their turn.

Some say the bill was defeated because angry and concerned citizens called and faxed their senators’ offices, urging them to vote against amnesty. Others, like The Wall Street Journal, credit conservative bloggers with “playing a central role” in helping defeat the bill by “endlessly picking through the evolving immigration legislation” and educating voters.

That’s all very ego-gratifying for us conservative bloggers, but there still is much work ahead. Now that amnesty is dead, state and local governments must aggressively fight illegal immigration and do what the federal government so far has been reluctant to do: focus on individuals and businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

Whatever It Takes

by La Shawn on June 14, 2007

in Book Reviews, Illegal Aliens

Whatever It TakesAmerica may be too good for its own good.

The qualities that draw people from all over the world – religious and political freedom, the rule of law, due process, a vibrant economy, and a high standard of living – are the same qualities bad eggs use against us.

There are an estimated 10 million illegal aliens in the United States. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the net cost of illegal immigration is about $70 billion per year, which doesn’t include unemployment compensation for legal citizens who lost jobs to illegal aliens.

While men and women are dying in Iraq to “make the world safe for democracy,” illegal aliens flout the rule of law at home, freely crossing our borders with a miniscule chance of being caught and deported. If Al Qaeda wanted to smuggle in a nuclear weapon, America’s southern border is a very inviting place to start.

In the age of terrorism, the federal government still won’t enforce immigration law. We can only guess why: addiction to cheap labor, fear of being called racists, blackmail by Mexican president Vicente Fox. I’m only half-kidding about Fox, but it makes me wonder why the government refuses to enforce the law.

[Now former] Congressman J.D. Hayworth of Arizona wonders, too. In his new book, Whatever It Takes: Illegal Immigration, Border Security, And the War on Terror, he explains how America is complicit in illegal immigration, a fact that would-be terrorists (who he calls “Islamofascists”) use to their advantage. Excluding the notes and index, the book is a quick read at just under 200 pages with 11 chapters. Hayworth uses plain language, devoid of politically correct jargon. He offers persuasive arguments against the nation-destroying insanity that is allowing millions of illegal aliens to infiltrate, overburden, and ultimately destroy our way of life.

Hayworth points out the absurdity of our current policies and wonders why illegal aliens are fearful of getting caught when the chances of being deported are low:

racial tug of warUpdate II (6/8): The amnesty bill is off the table for now. Why did Republicans support a bill so unpopular with constituents? Some thoughts. Michelle Malkin commends three Republicans who held out.

Update (6/7 @ 5:29 p.m.): Bush’s amnesty-for-illegal-aliens bill has stalled in the Senate. For now. The Senate needed 60 votes to end debate and vote on the bill, but fell 27 votes short. Some senators held out for the right reasons, others for the wrong reasons. Who cares? Just stop that bill from becoming law.
————————————————————————-
Lynwood, California, has gone through a few demographic changes. It was once predominantly white, then predominantly black, and now it’s predominantly hispanic. And dare I guess that a fair number of its hispanic inhabitants are illegal aliens? (Source)

Speaking of which, Michelle Malkin and others are live-blogging the “immigration” bill debate in the Senate this week. Click over and follow her reports and links, because I won’t be covering it. It’s too painful to watch a bunch of suicidal white men hasten the destruction of America and turn it into a two-language, Third World cesspool.

But I digress. I’ve blogged numerous times about the tension to come between blacks and hispanics. See here and here. It’s been simmering in California for a long time, and it’s going to get much worse.

Lynwood is the place to watch to understand how America’s future will unfold. The city is over 80 percent hispanic, and 40 percent of its residents are “foreign-born.” That means they’re illegal aliens. (How do I know?)

Because illegal aliens can’t legally vote in this country, blacks in Lynwood have a slight advantage. They still have the numbers to put their people in office. But as the children of illegal aliens come of age (who also should be considered illegal aliens; get rid of birthright citizenship for children of criminal aliens!), that will change. And if the amnesty-for-illegal-aliens bill passes the Senate, Lynwood’s hispanic voting bloc will emerge from the shadows.

You know what that means, right? Bye-bye, black politicos. From the story:

disappointmentAll these years, liberals were right about one thing: George Bush is an idiot. Video here.

What a disappointment. :x

Addendum: The backlash begins. (Thanks, Renee!)

Update (6/1): President George W. Bush will go down in history as the man who ushered in a dramatic demographic shift that turned the United States into a Third World country, with a disappearing middle class, another poorly educated and poor underclass (this one much larger than the other and Spanish-speaking), and a wealthy, insulated, gated-community elite.

And I voted for him. Twice. I voted for Clinton twice, too, but I’m more ashamed of voting for Bush.

Peggy Noonan writes: “What conservatives and Republicans must recognize is that the White House has broken with them. What President Bush is doing, and has been doing for some time, is sundering a great political coalition. This is sad, and it holds implications not only for one political party but for the American future.”

Check out this exchange between a Republican donor and the RNC.

I’m a revolter! At times like this, I’m glad I don’t belong to the Republican party. No annoying phone calls (or junk mail) from the RNC. :?

Update II: Loyal reader Renee just told me Rush Limbaugh read part of an article I wrote on his show today. Excellent. :)
