violent illegal aliens in Prince William County VA

Surely you’re not getting your news from this blog. You’ve probably read and heard the latest news on the illegal “immigration” front already, but if not, here’s a bit to chew on:

Local

Prince William County, Virginia, has joined other local counties and cities in the effort to alleviate some of the burden placed on law-abiding citizens and residents by the presence of illegal aliens within its jurisdiction (Herndon stands out as a defiant leader). Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to deny illegal aliens services paid for by taxpayers (Bravo!) These include housing assistance, business licenses, and drug counseling. More important is this: police will be allowed to ask about legal status. (Source)

As expected, so-called immigration groups will ask for an injunction, and they’ll probably get it. Hopefully, state measures will be strong enough to withstand legal challenge. Earlier this year, the Virginia House of Delegates passed a measure that would block public funds to charities and other organizations that provide services to illegal aliens.

Canada’s Looming ‘Refugee’ Crisis

by La Shawn on September 20, 2007

in Illegal Aliens

It seems that America’s so-called crackdown on illegal “immigration” (which I’m still convinced is just for show on the federal government’s part – it’s up to the states now) is causing a crisis in Canada. Our illegal aliens are rushing the Canadian border, claiming “refugee” status. (Source)

As you may be aware, a refugee is “one who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution.” A nation’s attempt to enforce its own immigration laws is akin to a time of war, oppression, and persecution, eh? Interesting. :?

Adios! Come back when you have the proper papers and some respect for the rule of law. Without it, America wouldn’t be a very cool place to live.

The irony is almost painful…

Herndon Shuts Down Day Labor Center

*** Scroll down for updates ***

The town of Herndon in Northern Virginia has decided to shut down its controversial day labor center rather than allow illegal aliens to use it. Bravo. (Source)

Brief history for those who haven’t followed the story: As they often do in too many cities and towns across the country, illegal aliens looking for work in the Herndon area began congregating at a local 7-11 store and on citizens’ property, making a nuisance of themselves. Two years ago, the town council thought it would be a good idea to use public funds to provide a place where these criminals and their criminal employers could meet up to engage in activity in direct violation of federal law.

Outrage doesn’t begin to describe Herndon’s or my reaction to the day labor center. The people booted out the mayor and other bums who voted to build it. But that didn’t end the matter. Even before the center opened, there’s been a lot of back and forth over who should be allowed to use it. A shameless illegal alien employer named Stephen A. Thomas had the nerve to cite a First Amendment right to illegally solicit workers at the center.

A circuit court judge ruled in Thomas’s favor. Illegal aliens must be allowed access to the day labor center. Which means employers are free to illegally solicit workers.

The new pro-immigration enforcement mayor, Stephen DeBenedittis, and the town council will close down the center rather than comply with the stupid ruling. Again, bravo. DeBenedittis didn’t want to break his campaign promise. A politician keeping a promise. Breathe in the fresh air, people! This is a rarity.

busted! No More Raid; Roaches Reportedly Happy

Last month I wrote about the federal government’s raid on Swift & Company, a meatpacking business that knowingly hires illegal aliens in violation of the law. It was showy theatrics that made for good photo ops.

The raid was the result of an identity fraud investigation, a new strategy in the “fight” to curb illegal “immigration.” The feds have decided, apparently, since they can’t round up and deport illegal aliens and penalize companies that hire them, going after select illegal aliens for identity theft is the next best thing.

Well, I can’t argue with that. Even if I did, the effort would be pointless. The United States is not interested in expelling its cheap labor force, an underclass that commits a disproportionate share of crimes and dicatates who can come and go in certain neighborhoods in Los Angeles County.

Having your identity stolen is unpleasant, I’m sure, and getting illegal aliens for identity fraud is killing two birds with one stone.

This morning I found out about a new program called “ICE (which stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Mutual Agreement Between Government and Employers” (IMAGE) via an Associated Press story. (Pet peeve: It’s bad form to use abbreviations and acronyms without writing out the entire name first, which the AP neglected to do.)

It seems the feds are “quietly” trying to “persuade” businesses that hire illegal aliens in violation of the law to “spare” themselves from “embarrassing federal raids” by cooperating and voluntarily handing over employee documents, including employees authorized to work in the U.S. An excerpt from the AP:

Update on the Porous Border Situation

by La Shawn on November 20, 2006

in Illegal Aliens

border jumpersAs long as idiot business owners and the elite continue hiring illegal aliens, the demand for illegal aliens and their urgency to cross the border by any means necessary aren’t going away. But enforcing the law certainly would make a dent in the supply.

But for reasons unknown to this American, the federal government will not enforce immigration law.

It’s shameful, especially in the age of terrorism, that our borders are unguarded and unprotected. It’s criminal that people not only get away with violating our laws and impinging on our nation’s right to protect itself from invasion, but too many of them have the gall to use our own (suicidal) generosity against us, taking advantage of the same system of laws they spit on!

But there’s no point in getting upset. :?

Larger cities have been able to absorb crime and overburdened social services better than small towns. The federal government has abandoned small town America. But these citizens are not rolling over and playing dead. They’re doing what Americans have always done: trying to protect themselves and their way of life. A few examples:

Herndon, VA — The northern VA town voted out its open-borders council and applied for Section 287(g) training, which will allow local law enforcement to “help” carry out federal immigration law.

Hazleton, PA — This northeastern Pennsylvania town passed ordinances prohibiting landlords from renting to illegal aliens and businesses from hiring them. Open-border plaintiffs took the matter to a federal court, and the judge issued a temporary injunction. Several factors are weighed when determining whether a court should grant an injunction, and one is “irreparable injury.” A pair of fools/hispanic store owners said running illegal aliens who shop at their stores out of town will harm their businesses. Can you believe it? Obviously, the judge agreed. Read the sorry memo (PDF) for yourselves.

There ought to be a law against…oh, wait…there is!

Bush and FoxThe beleaguered town of Herndon, Virginia, has applied to receive 287(G) training, which will enable its law enforcement community to properly and effectively carry out U.S. immigration laws. The Herndon Town Council proposal passed by a vote of 6-1. See this Washington Post story (free reg. req.).

Our co-president, Mexico president Vicente Fox, won’t be too happy about this.

My contact at Help Save Virginia (formerly Help Save Herndon) sent me a copy of the 287(G) training proposal. You may download the 19-page document here (PDF).

The Herndon “day laborer” issue is an ongoing saga in my area. For years, illegal aliens congregated in a 7-Eleven parking lot, dirtying up the neighborhood and making a nuisance of themselves. The former mayor and town council voted to build a day labor center with taxpayers’ money so the criminals could wait there to be picked up for jobs by criminal employers.

I channeled my outrage into a two-part column: A Nation of Outlaws, Part I and Part II.

When election time rolled around this past May, the mayor and most of the council members who voted for the illegal plan were ousted, kicked out of office.

Herndon has to wait for acceptance into the 287(G) training program. Once approved, officers will be allowed to ask a suspect and/or arrestee the status of his citizenship and detain him if he’s here in violation of federal law.

Update: Speaking of 7-Eleven, the convenience store is dropping Citgo, a company owned by Venezuela. Last week, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said some nasty things about the president. Bloggers and others were calling for a boycott against Citgo. More on the story here, here, and here.

caution signSunday, August 27: Diseases once eradicated have returned. Third world inhabitants who enter the country illegally bring their third world diseases and lifestyles with them.

Another Update: They all come here to work, right? The poor things

Gang-rapes and anti-trust lawsuits and $49 billion in welfare over the next five years, Oh my!

I suspect that catch-and-release policies aren’t the most effective way to enforce immigration law. But hey, what do I know?

Update: Can’t wait to read this. (Not bad, PB.) I’m sure it’s an update to this. If you had a choice, would you rather live during the rise of a great civilization or its decline?
—————————————————————-

I haven’t blogged about illegal “immigration” in awhile. The subject makes me very angry, I admit, and I don’t like blogging when I’m angry.

I’m angry that I can’t do anything about the Bush administration’s determination to keep the borders porous and to reward illegal aliens with citizenship. I hate it. It’s a collective slap in the face to millions of Americans who pay taxes and to legal aliens who sacrifice and go through the proper channels to become citizens.

I struggle with this issue. I definitely don’t reveal all my struggles on this public blog, but I reveal enough. It’s important to me that people know I hold myself to the same standards as I hold everyone else. Like all human beings, I sometimes fall short of those standards, but I learn from the struggle.

Exactly what I’m learning, I couldn’t tell you. :?

A Nation of Outlaws

by La Shawn on July 22, 2006

in General

A citizen of the United States is a native-born, foreign-born, or naturalized person who owes allegiance to the United States and who is entitled to its protection.
– U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

America has been invaded by an army of illegal aliens. Just last week in Arizona, an American was forced to surrender his land to illegal aliens who claimed he had assaulted them. The two criminals were caught trespassing on his property after crossing the border in violation of federal law. Unfortunately, this is part of a larger trend, one that grants more rights to illegal immigrants than American citizens.

Illegal immigration costs American taxpayers billions of dollars each year. In California alone the cost is $10.5 billion annually. The price tag for the rest of the country, especially border states, is incomprehensible. Illegal immigration is also a public safety risk because aliens do not undergo a medical screening before entering the United States. As a result, diseases once eradicated or virtually eradicated have resurfaced in America. Where is the so-called protection we’re entitled to as American citizens?

According to the 2000 Census, an estimated eight million illegal aliens were living in the U.S., and they continue to flood across the border at the rate of one million per year. Mexican citizens are required to have either a non-immigration visa or Border Crossing Card to enter the country, and no immigrant is to be admitted unless he has suitable and valid travel documentation. In violation of federal law, millions of foreigners don’t possess these documents. They are outlaws.

Detractors will ask, “Do you really expect the government to round up each illegal alien and kick him out?” In a word, yes. The money spent educating, imprisoning and providing health care to criminal aliens should be diverted to reinforcing the borders and enforcing immigration law.

But the federal government seems uninterested in enforcing the law. As a result, local governments are illegally using public funds to alleviate the damage caused by the invasion. On August 16, 2005, the Herndon Town Council in Herndon, Virginia, voted 5-2 to approve a plan to build an illegal gathering spot for “day laborers” so they can wait for lawbreaking employers to illegally hire them. More outlaws.

One group is trying to do what the U.S. government refuses to do. Judicial Watch, a group dedicated to protecting citizens from the government, will file a lawsuit against Herndon. “[N]o public official has any inherent power to authorize or facilitate unlawful acts using taxpayer funds….Law enforcement is in order, not taxpayer subsidies,” said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.

Because the federal government is indifferent to its problem, the Town of Herndon was essentially forced to break the law. I asked Council Member Dennis Husch, who voted against the plan, whether Herndon law enforcement officials were allowed to ask so-called day laborers about their citizenship status. “[Immigration Customs and Enforcement] has refused to enforce immigration laws in Herndon and has refused to allow Herndon police to enforce federal immigration laws,” he said. I called Herndon’s mayor for comment, but the call was not returned.

I wanted to know what Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) had to say about the day labor center. So I spoke with Jamie Zuiebach, a spokesperson for ICE, who told me I’d have to speak to a “local official in Herndon,” on the matter.

“I thought I’d also speak to someone at ICE, the government entity charged with enforcing immigration law,” I said. Zuiebach responded with a canned and not-so-accurate line: “We continue to work closely with law enforcement partners to enforce immigration laws, and I don’t have anything to say about a local issue.”

The federal agency responsible for enforcing federal immigration laws has nothing to say about the “local issue” of illegal immigration. Meanwhile, Herndon citizens will contribute to an illegal enterprise for illegal aliens who should be sitting in deportation hearings instead of a brand new building waiting for off-the-books jobs.

What would the American founders say about the state of our country? One of them, President John Adams, made a prediction about the collapse of democracy. “It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”

Illegal immigration has burdened America and changed our culture for the worse, and our own government refuses to do anything about it. We are no longer a nation ruled by the people and for the people.

We are a nation of outlaws.

A Nation of Outlaws II

A nation of outlaws, Part II
By La Shawn Barber

Sep 14, 2005

“The federal government has left Herndon on its own.”

Those words spoken by Herndon Planning Commissioner Robert Burk resonate with citizens of Herndon, Virginia, and Americans across the country. As more illegal aliens stream across the border and the federal government continues to ignore the problem, more local governments will be forced to deal with the problem on their own.

In response to illegal aliens loitering around a local 7-Eleven, creating a public nuisance while waiting for off-the-books jobs, the Herndon Town Council approved a plan to build a central location for the “day laborers.” Dennis Husch, a council member who voted against the proposal, described the conditions:

Daily we see up to 150 men seeking work around the intersection of Alabama Drive and Elden Street beginning about 6:30 am every day. That number dwindles to about 75 at 11 am when all of the jobs are taken. For the rest of the day and into the early evening, the men ‘hang-out’ along the street and at the 7-Eleven and socialize.

Unfortunately, the right to loiter is the law of the land. “We have been advised by the Town Attorney that loitering laws are not enforceable based on a ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Husch. Fortunately, the council’s vote isn’t the final word. There are a few obstacles on the road to the illegal, taxpayer-supported center:

• Legal Action – Judicial Watch, a nonprofit watchdog group, filed suit against the Town of Herndon on behalf of Herndon taxpayers. “Can a town expend taxpayer monies or provide support to facilitate such illegal activities? Of course not,” said president Tom Fitton. “This proposed site is designed to facilitate illegal activity: the illegal hiring of illegal aliens…For the Town Council to recommend this plan would be illegal under federal law. But it would also be illegal under Virginia law.”

Herndon officials obviously know that using public funds to build the day labor center is against the law, but they probably figured if illegal aliens can get away with breaking the law, they can too.

• Zoning Action – Part of the proposed day labor site will be located in Loudoun County. On September 6, the Loudoun County Zoning Administrator ruled that the site would not be an appropriate use of the property, which is zoned as residential. Herndon must apply for a special exemption, but the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is considering legal action against Herndon.

• Citizen Action – According to the Washington Examiner, the Minuteman volunteers may be headed to Herndon. The Minuteman Project is a group of citizens who stand watch over the borders. If more citizens joined this group and others like Help Save Herndon, they may be able to sway or shame the Herndon Town Council into reversing its decision.

• Emergency Action – The Democratic governors of Arizona and New Mexico, two border states, recently declared states of emergency because of the damage and danger caused by illegal immigration. Virginia isn’t a border state, but local politicians have asked Virginia Gov. Mark Warner to declare a state of emergency. It may be the only way to get the federal government involved in a “local issue.”

We all know illegal immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and growing national concern. Husch expressed disappointment in his political colleagues’ failure to step forward.

“Herndon was forced to go it alone,” Husch said. “All I can say is, shame on them for their cowardly retreat. True leadership was in their grasp if they had seized the moment.”

One of those colleagues, Herndon Mayor Michael O’Reilly, voted for the day labor center.
Although he acknowledges that illegal immigration is the feds’ responsibility, he’s confused about his own. After Judicial Watch filed its lawsuit, O’Reilly issued this statement:

It is unfortunate that this organization is using the Herndon day worker issue to pursue an agenda to attempt to influence or reform federal immigration policy. Clearly the national immigration issue needs to be handled by Congress and the executive branch and not by small local governments such as Herndon.

Americans have a right to influence government policy and petition the government for redress. Citizens of Herndon elected legislators to write laws and a mayor to execute those laws, and they have the constitutional right – a duty – to complain when those officials shirk those responsibilities.

O’Reilly added: “We strongly urge those interested in the national immigration issue to communicate their questions and concerns to their federal representatives in Congress and the Senate who have the ability to address them.”

I wonder if the mayor followed his own advice before he voted for an illegal enterprise designed to benefit illegal aliens and their illegal employers at taxpayers’ expense in violation of federal law. I guess the buck has to stop somewhere, and Herndon’s mayor wants his constituents to know it doesn’t stop at his office.

Correction: In Part I, I wrote that illegal immigrants “flood across the border at the rate of one million a year.” About half a million illegal aliens enter the U.S. annually.

Dead Amnesty-For-Illegal-Aliens Bill?

by La Shawn on June 22, 2006

billUpdate (6/23): Firefighters fired because they don’t speak Spanish
————————————————————————————–

Thanks to Dennis Hastert’s hardball maneuver, it looks like President Bush’s amnesty-for-illegal-aliens bill is floating on the surface of the political pond like a putrid dead fish. Shame on all Republicans who voted for it.

Keep border and interior enforcement provisions and dump all provisions leading to citizenship for lawbreakers.

By the way, my first Examiner column is up. Check it out. This morning I walked to the corner news stand and grabbed a few hard copies. It looks so much better in print. The smell of the paper, the ink on my fingers…it was nostalgic! (Also see page 19 of the PDF)

I jumped off Bush’s “nation of laws, nation of immigrants” bandwagon and ran. In theory, we’re a nation of laws, but in practice — Read Part I and Part II of my column on the Herndon, Virginia, day labor center and other topics.

Addendum: Ed Morrissey, fellow Blog Board of Contributors member, writes:

Americans have no real ethnic ties to bind them as a nation. This nation bound itself from the beginning on an ideal, one that we have frequently failed but always aspired to achieve: equal treatment under the law. At the time, the notion that a functioning state could survive without a monarch as at least a symbol of national unity seemed ludicrous, but the real challenge as we grew was the notion that disparate cultures could come together, cast off their allegiances to ethnicity and religion to be Americans first and foremost. The one binding cultural touchstone was the ideal of equal treatment under the law, and the laws that implemented it.

It therefore rankles and enrages when we have new immigrants come to this country, and in their very first steps on American soil disdain the laws that bind us as a culture.

Should George Bush Be Impeached?

by La Shawn on May 10, 2006

in Bush Bad, Illegal Aliens

Andrew Johnson Richard Nixon Bill Clinton George Bush

Monday, May 15: I’m still surprised by the popularity of this post, but I welcome new readers and civil commenters nonetheless. When you’re done reading the post, read this one about tonight’s speech.

Friday, May 12: This post is still generating interest (for some odd reason!), so I’ve re-opened it for commenting. Read the entire post, read parts of it, follow instructions or not, talk about the weather…whatever. Happy Friday! :D

Update II (5/11): I’m really quite disappointed with commenters on this post. It’s not about dissent; I allow non-ad homimen dissent at LBC. But I asked for two things on this post: other examples of abuse of power and other possible articles of impeachment. Exactly one commenter attempted to answer one of the questions. Many disagreed and didn’t address the questions. A few told me I was crazy (although most of those didn’t make it past the troll filter). Even commenters who agreed with the post didn’t answer the questions.

The hypothetical Article I drafted was deliberately vague. You’ll notice that I created a (1) but didn’t add (2). I wanted readers to come up with additional articles and examples. It was an exercise, an experiment to see what commenters would come up with.

But most didn’t bother. I could have added something like, “If you don’t think he should be impeached, don’t comment,” but people would have commented anyway. That’s the way we are. Whether people ask or not, we want to tell them what we think. I know my opinion about what should be done with Bush is controversial. Controversy sells. I can handle controversy. It’s the reason I’m a high ranking blogger. But this little impeachment hypothetical failed. Oh, well. On to the next post.

illegal aliensUpdate II: Tomorrow around 12:30 p.m. EDT, I’ll make a second appearance on Tammy Bruce’s radio show to talk about illegal immigration.

Here’s an op-ed written by a liberal who opposes illegal immigration. Good stuff. I said the same thing, more or less, in Greatness Falls.

Update: If I may be so dramatic, there’s a tug-of-war for America’s soul going on. The winner has yet to be determined.

Blogger and editorial writer (and fellow Reformed Christian) Mark Tapscott says, “Americans won’t be blackmailed.”

Leave it to The Onion to make us laugh in the midst of this cultural war. Humor is good for the soul.

Did you know the Minuteman Project had a blog? Me, either. They’re on the march to protect the borders. Black Americans are volunteering too, including “rasta Republican” Ted Hayes.

An “immigrant activist” said of Hayes: “He has a right to express his opinion, but I don’t agree with him. Many and most African American leaders think otherwise and we’re appreciative of their support.”

Thank you, Lord in heaven, for being all the leader I need!

Interesting, but not surprising, news: Hispanics Carry Lopsided Share Of DWI Arrests in Wake County, North Carolina. More interesting is how many drunk driving hispanic arrestees are illegal aliens. But local law enforcement officials aren’t allowed to ask. Hispanics probably make up a significant percentage of drunk drivers in the D.C. area, too, as well as uninsured drivers.

Bush wants to reward such people with amnesty instead of punishing them with deportation.

Amusing ‘Multicultural’ Encounters

by La Shawn on February 15, 2006

in Comedy, Illegal Aliens

multiculti Just got back from the corner store picking up a few supplies. Rewind. So I’m minding my own business and picking out items when I overhear an amusing exchange between a Spanish-speaking and probably illegal alien shelf stocker and an Ethiopian woman.

They’re in the meat section, and she’s asking him in broken English if what she’s holding is a package of chicken breasts. He grunts something I presumed was in Spanish, but she doesn’t understand him. This goes on for about a minute before she spots me. Rushing over, she holds the package up to my face, “Chicken breast?”

I guess I’ve got that “American” look. ;)

“Yes,” I tell her. Just in case, I told her the price. I move on to the next aisle. A few seconds later I hear her talking to a different poor English-speaking stocker about another product. In the olden days, you could ask stock people (or whatever they’re called) where items were, and they’d either tell you, in English, or find someone to help you. These days, chances are the stock guy won’t understand you, although you’re both in an English-speaking country.

While I’m in the check out line, a guy with a heavy Indian accent says something to the Ethiopian cashier about a bottle of water.

“Eh?” she asks. He repeats himself, but she’s having trouble understanding. Since I don’t provide translation services, I just observe, half-amused, half-dismayed.

Read about another amusing encounter I had. You know, I don’t mind skin color and cultural diversity, but it would be nice if immigrants bothered to learn the language. :?

Do you have similar encounters you want to share?

Bonus question: What sort of person is missing from the graphic? Guess correctly, and you get a prize!

Update: Suing idiot companies that hire illegals (use BugMeNot to bypass reg.) under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute is a brilliant idea. The plaintiffs are suing some carpet company for conspiring “to artificially and illegally depress wages by hiring illegal immigrants.”

Several years ago the dedicated folks at the U.S. Attorneys Office in DC figured out they had to prosecute gangs under RICO if they ever hoped to make headway into the world of witness-killing thugs. Gangs are organized criminal enterprises (no matter how bumbling) that conspire to commit murder, sell narcotics, kidnap, etc., falling squarely under the statute. (Incidentally, drug conspiracy alone is enough to land you in prison for life under RICO.) It just might work against businesses that hire illegal aliens in violation of federal law.

Judicial Watch is suing the Town of Herndon (VA) on behalf of Herndon taxpayers for using public funds to build a day labor center for illegal aliens.

Don’t get mad. Get the law. Sometimes it works, and businesses and politicians can’t ignore it for long.

Wal-Mart Construction Site Sting

by La Shawn on November 19, 2005

in Illegal Aliens

I love it when the government does its job.

Last Thursday federal agents arrested over 100 mostly Mexican illegal aliens working at a Wal-Mart construction site. In an effort to weasel out, Wal-Mart claims it isn’t responsible because the illegal aliens were hired by a subcontractor. We’d probably buy it if 250+ illegal aliens hadn’t been caught working in Wal-Mart stores.

I’ll confess. I (used to) love Wal-Mart. I could spend hours walking around those gigantic stores piling my shopping cart with all that low-priced stuff. I’m not much of a protester, but I think a boycott against Wal-Mart is in order.

Blogger Debbie Schlussel frequently blogs about our lax and suicidal immigration non-policy. Also see Michelle Malkin, Beyond Borders Blog, and Federation for American Immigration Reform.

You can listen to me tomorrow around 9:00 a.m. EDT on Bruce Elliott’s radio show. We’ll discuss illegal immigration in general and the Herndon (VA) day labor center specifically.

On Monday at 4:05 p.m. EDT I’ll appear on CRN to talk about the same article.

Have a good weekend, rest easy, and take a break from the Internet. Read a book.
